Abstract: Intragranular misorientation reflects strain generated during deformation with dislocation glide. The SEM/EBSP (scanning electron microscope/ electron back scatter diffraction pattern) technique provides is “kernel average misorientation (KAM)” as the most appropriate quantity to evaluate the strain or the stored energy for a given point. The KAM is defined for a given point as the average misorientation of that point with all of its neighbors. In the present paper two analyses of the intragranular misorientation using the SEM/EBSP technique for a cyclic deformation at room temperature and a high temperature deformation in an Al-Mg-Mn alloy are reviewed.

Abstract: Quorum sensing is a cell-to-cell communication that occurs via autoinducers, regulating a number of bacterial virulence factors including the opportunistic wound pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which uses the N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-homoserine lactone as one of the two main autoinducers; however, little is known about its role in chronic wound infection. This study was designed to quantify this autoinducer from P. aeruginosa-infected wounds with the aim of examining the possible use of autoinducers as an indicator of chronic wound infection. Pressure-induced ischemic wounds were infected with P. aeruginosa (N=12) or uninfected as a control (N=12). The autoinducer was quantified by bioassay method employing Escherichia coli DH5 alpha (pJN105L, pSC11) or Agrobacterium tumefaciens NTL4 (pZLR4) reporter, which expresses beta-galactosidase when exposed to P. aeruginosa quorum sensing signals. The average concentration of autoinducer was 0.33 pmol/g at day 3 and 0.49 pmol/g at day 7 in the infected wounds, as detected from tissue samples. A linear correlation between autoinducer concentration and bacterial counts was observed. No autoinducer was detected in tissue samples from the uninfected control group. Our findings indicate that the quantification of autoinducers is possible and quorum sensing system could play a role in in vivo wound infection models, and also suggest possible clinical implications of autoinducer signal quantification in diagnosis of chronic wound infection.

TL;DR: In this paper, a high-density air shower array was used to search for γ-ray signals from the BL Lac object Mrk 501 during the period in 1997 from February through August.
Abstract: In 1997, the BL Lac object Mrk 501 entered a very active phase and was the brightest source in the sky at TeV energies, showing strong and frequent flaring. Using the data obtained with a high-density air shower array that has been operating successfully at Yangbajing in Tibet since 1996, we searched for γ-ray signals from this source during the period in 1997 from February through August. Our observation detected multi-TeV γ-ray signals at the 3.7 σ level during this period. The most rapid increase in the excess counts was observed between April 7 and June 16, and the statistical significance of the excess counts in this period was 4.7 σ. Among several observations of flaring TeV γ-rays from Mrk 501 in 1997, this is the only observation using a conventional air shower array. We present the energy spectrum of γ-rays, which will be worth comparing with those obtained by imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes.
