TL;DR: In this paper, a low-temperature method for growing (0001)-oriented one-dimensional ZnO nanopillars using electrodeposition in a simple zinc nitrate aqueous solution without any template is presented.
Abstract: A low-temperature method for growing (0001)-oriented one-dimensional ZnO nanopillars using electrodeposition in a simple zinc nitrate aqueous solution without any template is presented. The 20–100 nm diameter ZnO nanopillars emitted ultraviolet light at around 3.30 eV due to the recombination of the bound excitons and visible light at 2.30–2.55 eV at room temperature. Since the diameter and length can be controlled easily, some applications for use in ultraviolet light lasing diode and organic solar cells will be made.

TL;DR: 20-bp of the lux box-like sequence was found upstream of vioA in C. violaceum ATCC 12472, and in strain ATCC12472, C6-HSL inhibited both C10- HSL-mediated violacein production and the transcription ofvioA.
Abstract: Chromobacterium violaceum produces the purple pigment violacein by quorum-sensing regulation. 20-bp of the lux box-like sequence was found upstream of vioA in C. violaceum ATCC 12472. CviR received C10-HSL and C6-HSL and activated the transcription of vioA in Escherichia coli. However, in strain ATCC 12472, C6-HSL inhibited both C10-HSL-mediated violacein production and the transcription of vioA.

TL;DR: In this paper, the strength of habitat association with the species-specific optimal habitat increase with tree size and the number of trees in a Bornean tropical rain forest was investigated.
Abstract: Questions: 1. Are trees in a Bornean tropical rain forest associated with a particular habitat? 2. Does the strength of habitat association with the species-specific optimal habitat increase with tree size? Location: A 52-ha plot in a mixed dipterocarp forest in a heterogeneous landscape at the Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak, East Malaysia. Methods: Ten species from the Sterculiaceae were chosen as representative of all species in the plot, on the assumption that competition among closely related species is more stringent than that among more distantly related taxa. Their habitat associations were tested using data from a 52-ha plot by a torus-translation test. Results: The torus-translation test showed that eight out of the ten species examined had significant association with at least one habitat. We could not find negative species-habitat associations for rare species, probably due to their small sample sizes. Among four species small trees were less strongly associated with habitat than ...

TL;DR: Comparative study of the HPLC elution pattern among fungal metabolites found that a strain, Beauveria bassiana EPF-5, produced two novel metabolites, designated pyridovericin (1) and p Pyridomacrolidin (2).
Abstract: program, we systematically investigated the diversity of metabolites in Deuteromycota, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Nomuraea rileyi, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and Verticillium lecanii, which have been isolated from the corpses of insects. Comparative study of the HPLC elution pattern among fungal metabolites found that a strain, Beauveria bassiana EPF-5, produced two novel metabolites, designated pyridovericin (1) and pyridomacrolidin (2). In this communication, we preliminarily report the production, isolation, structure and biological activities of 1 and 2. The detection of fungal metabolites by HPLC analysis was performed under the following conditions: column: ODS column (Senshu Pak PEGASIL); solvent: a linear gradient 50% MeOH to 70% MeOH for 50 minutes; UV detection at 220nm, 254nm and 310nm; flow rate of 3.0ml/minute. Beauveria bassiana EPF-5, a strain isolated from an adult Mulberry small weevil (Baris
