TL;DR: The gastrolith of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii contains a small amount of an organic matrix that is mainly chitin and proteins, together with a large amount of calcium carbonate, which helps to understand the mechanism of calcification.
Abstract: The gastrolith of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii contains a small amount of an organic matrix that is mainly chitin and proteins, together with a large amount of calcium carbonate. As the first step to understand the mechanism of calcification, we tried to characterize matrix proteins in the gastrolith. An insoluble matrix protein, referred to as gastrolith matrix protein, was made soluble with 1% SDS containing 10 mM dithiothreitol, and was purified by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The protein had a molecular weight of about 50,500 and a blocked amino terminus. By enzymatic digestion and microsequencing, five partial amino acid sequences with a total of 225 amino acid residues were identified and found to include a repetitive sequence not reported previously.

TL;DR: In this article, a short-pulsed laser of TEM (1, 0) + TEM(0, 1) was used to trap electrons in transverse and accelerate them with the longitudinal ponderomotive force at the same time.
Abstract: Electron ponderomotive acceleration in a vacuum by a short-pulsed laser of TEM (1, 0) + TEM (0, 1) mode is studied in this paper using a 3-dimensional (3D) particle simulation. It was found that the laser can trap electrons in transverse and accelerate them with the longitudinal ponderomotive force at the same time. Through this electron trapping and acceleration scheme of TEM (1, 0) + TEM (0, 1) mode laser, the electron bunch is confined well in transverse and compressed remarkably in longitudinal. Therefore, a high energy, high density, and low emittances electron bunch is generated. For example, the result shows that for a laser with intensity of a0 = eE0 /mωc = 10, the laser spot size of w0 = 15λ, and the laser pulse length of Lz = 10λ, the maximum energy gain reaches 301 MeV and the average energy 57.7 MeV. The electron bunch transverse radius is about 350λ and the longitudinal size about 20λ. The property of this accelerated bunch is improved compared with that generated by the laser of TEM (0, 0) mode.

TL;DR: It is shown by simulations that terahertz (THz) radiation can be produced more efficiently by a mid-infrared laser pulse from a gas target because the laser intensity threshold for the THz emission is lower for a longer laser wavelength.
Abstract: It is shown by simulations that terahertz (THz) radiation can be produced more efficiently by a mid-infrared laser pulse from a gas target. The THz amplitude is enhanced by 35 times as the laser wavelength increases from 1 μm to 4 μm; a 4 μm laser at 1015 W cm−2 produces 5 MV/cm THz radiation. The THz amplitude changes oscillatingly with increasing laser intensity for a given laser wavelength. In addition, the laser intensity threshold for the THz emission is lower for a longer laser wavelength.

TL;DR: The expression of mRNA of leptin, the product of the obese gene, in bovine adipose tissue was analyzed and significantly decreased by food deprivation for two days and partially recovered after 3 hr of refeeding, indicating that obese gene expression in the ruminant was regulated by feeding.
Abstract: The expression of mRNA of leptin, the product of the obese gene, in bovine adipose tissue was analyzed by a lysate RNase protection assay. The mRNA level was significantly decreased by food deprivation for two days and partially recovered after 3 hr of refeeding, indicating that obese gene expression in the ruminant was regulated by feeding.
