Abstract: In the future, a major role of fuel cells in combined heat and power generation systems is envisaged. It is well known that a fuel cell's efficiency is highly dependent on the operating conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and air flow. In the aim to assure optimal operating conditions as well as to minimize the losses, parameter identification, diagnostics, and control are going to play an important role. The paper deals with parameter identification and diagnostics of a low-power proton-exchange membrane fuel cell considering a system identification approach. This multi-input multi-output electrochemical system can be tested or monitored by identifying its parameters, which has real importance in the manufacturing, exploitation, and maintenance phase. Therefore, parameter identification represents the core of any diagnostics or online monitoring procedure. Furthermore, online parameter estimation might be used for control purposes to maintain the fuel cell in an optimal operating point with minimal losses. The proposed parameter identification method is simple, cost-effective, and can be extended easily for fuel-cell stacks too.

Abstract: Relationships between cell and pulp properties were investigated by examining the within-tree property variations in Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus globulus. Properties investigated included proportions of ray and axial parenchyma, thickness of cell walls and cell wall percentages. The characteristics of the ray and axial parenchyma (their proportions and wall thickness) were found to have a significant influence on all measured pulp properties, including paper strength properties. Multiple regression of pulp properties in relation to cell properties revealed that nearly all measured pulp properties were explained by cell properties at the 1% significance level. It was concluded, therefore, that all cell types are important for predicting pulp properties, and it is strongly recommended that tree breeding programs for Eucalyptus include the measurement of all cell types.

Abstract: The response of the root system architecture to nutrient deficiencies is critical for sustainable agriculture. Nitric oxide (NO) is considered a key regulator of root growth, although the mechanisms remain unknown. Phenotypic, cellular and genetic analyses were undertaken in rice to explore the role of NO in regulating root growth and strigolactone (SL) signalling under nitrogen-deficient and phosphate-deficient conditions (LN and LP). LN-induced and LP-induced seminal root elongation paralleled NO production in root tips. NO played an important role in a shared pathway of LN-induced and LP-induced root elongation via increased meristem activity. Interestingly, no responses of root elongation were observed in SL d mutants compared with wild-type plants, although similar NO accumulation was induced by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) application. Application of abamine (the SL inhibitor) reduced seminal root length and pCYCB1;1::GUS expression induced by SNP application in wild type; furthermore, comparison with wild type showed lower SL-signalling genes in nia2 mutants under control and LN treatments and similar under SNP application. Western blot analysis revealed that NO, similar to SL, triggered proteasome-mediated degradation of D53 protein levels. Therefore, we presented a novel signalling pathway in which NO-activated seminal root elongation under LN and LP conditions, with the involvement of SLs.

Abstract: An internal magnetic abrasive finishing process using a pole rotation system was proposed to produce highly finished inner surfaces of workpieces used in critical applications. Previous research found that the process incorporating one of the characteristic behaviors of the abrasive, the jumbling of the abrasive, results in aggressive contact of the abrasive against the inner surface, disturbing the smooth surface finish. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to characterize the in-process abrasive behavior against the surface and its effects on the finishing characteristics and to describe the finishing mechanism. The magnetic force acting on the magnetic abrasive, controlled by the field at the finishing area, is considered the primary influence on the abrasive behavior against the inner surface of the workpiece. This study examines the relationships between the magnetic field, the force on the abrasive, and the abrasive behavior. The surface roughness and material removal measurements resulting from finishing experiments demonstrate the effects of the abrasive behavior on the surface modifications. This paper also proposes a method to monitor the in-process abrasive behavior to facilitate processing.

Abstract: The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results.
