TL;DR: The effects of high hydrostatic pressure and protein concentration on the denaturation and gelation of whey protein were investigated and beta-Lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, and serum albumin preferentially participated in pressure-induced aggregation and gelations through S-S bonding.
Abstract: The effects of high hydrostatic pressure and protein concentration on the denaturation and gelation of whey protein were investigated. Industrial whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) solutions (pH 6.8) at various concentrations were pressurized for 10 min at 30 degrees C under 200-1000 MPa. With the WPI solution, the concentration for affecting the turbidity was 1% and was 6% for the viscosity at 400 MPa, while for inducing gelation, it was 10% at 600 MPa. With the WPC solution, the viscosity changed at a concentration >12%, and gel formation began at >18% at 400 MPa. The hardness and breaking stress of pressure-induced WPI gels increased with increasing concentration of WPI (12-18%) and hydrostatic pressure, the ratings for the 20% WPC gels being one-third those of the 20% WPI gels. The solubility of proteins from the pressure-induced WPI gels decreased with increasing pressure, while that of WPC gel induced at >600 MPa remained constant at approximately 50%. The microstructure of the WPI gels had a porous network form, whereas the WPC gels were irregular particulates. beta-Lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, and serum albumin preferentially participated in pressure-induced aggregation and gelation through S-S bonding.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented the grinding characteristics of a newly developed ultrafine polycrystalline cBN abrasive grit in creep feed profile grinding of Nickel-based superalloys.
Abstract: This paper presents the grinding characteristics of a newly developed ultrafine-polycrystalline cBN abrasive grit in creep feed profile grinding of Nickel-based superalloys. Experiments for producing a rectangular-shaped groove on a flat surface in one pass by creep feed grinding have been carried out using the new polycrystalline cBN (PcBN-U) grit and a representative conventional monocrystalline cBN (McBN-B1) grit. The grinding forces in grinding with PcBN-U grits are reduced by 20 ∼ 30% compared with McBN-B1 grits. When grinding with PcBN-U grits, both radial wear and profile wear are less, and hence the grinding ratio is around 4 times higher than that with McBN-B1 grits. The size of grit fracture during the grinding process with PcBN-U grits is smaller than that with McBN-B1 grits. It gives lower wheel wear rate and longer wheel life in grinding with PcBN-U than with McBN-B1.

TL;DR: The results provide a basis for the inhibitory effects of nitrogen fertilizer on infection by root parasitic weeds, broomrapes and witchweeds, and explain why these parasites prevail in areas where there is lower phosphorus availability in soils.
Abstract: The effect of nutrients (nitrate, ammonium, urea, phosphate and potassium) on the production and/or exudation of germination stimulants for clover broomrape (Orobanche minor Sm.), a root holoparasite, by its host red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) was examined using hydroponically grown material. Potassium (K 2 SO 4 ) concentrations up to 100 mg l -1 (based on K) did not affect the production of germination stimulants by red clover while, in contrast, phosphate (NaH 2 PO 4 ) was highly inhibitory even at concentrations as low as 1 mg l -1 (based on P). * Nitrate (NaNO 3 ) markedly promoted stimulant production in a dose-dependent manner from 2 to 50 mg l -1 (based on N). Ammonium [(NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ] had no effect at 2 mg l -1 (based on N) but was inhibitory at higher concentrations. Ammonium is known to be a seed germination inhibitor of root parasites, indicating that ammonium has a dual inhibitory action. Urea had no effect at 2 mg l -1 (based on N) but was promotive at higher concentrations. These results provide a basis for the inhibitory effects of nitrogen fertilizer on infection by root parasitic weeds, broomrapes and witchweeds, and explain why these parasites prevail in areas where there is lower phosphorus availability in soils.
