TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed OGLE-2008-BLG-279, which peaked at a maximum magnification of A ~ 1600 on 2008 May 30, and determined the mass of the lens, Ml = 0.64? 0.10 M?, and its distance, Dl = 4.0 ǫ 0.6 kpc.
Abstract: We analyze the extreme high-magnification microlensing event OGLE-2008-BLG-279, which peaked at a maximum magnification of A ~ 1600 on 2008 May 30. The peak of this event exhibits both finite-source effects and terrestrial parallax, from which we determine the mass of the lens, Ml = 0.64 ? 0.10 M ?, and its distance, Dl = 4.0 ? 0.6 kpc. We rule out Jupiter-mass planetary companions to the lens star for projected separations in the range 0.5-20 AU. More generally, we find that this event was sensitive to planets with masses as small as with projected separations near the Einstein ring (~3 AU).

TL;DR: In this paper, a 3D array antenna is investigated and implemented on Matlab, and the authors introduce a general direction function of 3D antenna and simulations of three typical types of arrays formed: diagonal planar array, trapezoidal array and curved surface array.
Abstract: The beam width of planar phased array antenna becomes large as increasing of the scanning angle, so that the scanning range is limited. Conformal phased array antennas might be applied to improve the scanning range. However, the element distribution of a conformal phased array is not regularization, so the analysis is very complicate. In this article, a three-dimensional (3D) array antenna is investigated and implemented on Matlab. 3D array antenna can form different types of arrays to scan any space through choosing different elements. This paper introduces a general direction function of 3D array antenna and simulations of three typical types of arrays formed: diagonal planar array, trapezoidal array and curved surface array. It also investigates the differences of the beam patterns.

TL;DR: MATLAB programming is implemented as a computing tool in engineering analysis course to stimulate student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills and make it feasible for students to understand the behavior of an engineering system.
Abstract: The aim is to develop a teaching process that can contribute to the success and improvement of students through the courses in engineering and technology programs. This process is based on a model that can enhance student’s communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving skills through the core and design courses. For this model to be successful students are required to have a fundamental understanding in basic science and math courses and faculty must introduce and engage students with real applied problems/projects that incorporate research, analysis, and class presentation. Currently this model has been implemented through the core courses in Mechatronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. All those programs were able to produce a pool of talented students that can excel in workplace and graduate schools. In this study MATLAB programming is implemented as a computing tool in engineering analysis course to stimulate student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills. This exposure to MATLAB programming will also make it feasible for students to understand the behavior of an engineering system.

TL;DR: A triangulated irregular network(TIN) based chunk gridding algorithm for terrain rendering was presented considering the topological flexibility of TINs and can create TIN without redundant vertices based on the Delaunay mesh generation procedure.
Abstract: A triangulated irregular network(TIN) based chunk gridding algorithm for terrain rendering was presented considering the topological flexibility of TINsThe classic chunked level-of-detail(LOD) codes are mainly based on gridding algorithms of semi-regular triangular network(SRN) and easily produces redundant verticesThe new algorithm can create TIN without redundant vertices based on the Delaunay mesh generation procedureThe mechanism of redundant vertex creation of classic algorithms was pointed out after the review on the framework of the terrain rendering algorithm and the SRN based chunk gridding algorithmThen the TIN based chunk gridding algorithm was discussed, with emphasis on the algorithm and its robustness of Delaunay mesh generation based on the Bowyer-Watson incremental point insertion technique, and the stripping algorithm of TINs was also addressedResults show that the algorithm can greatly decrease the grid scale about 30% in typical numerical experiments, thus decreases the interim file sizes and improves the efficiency of subsequent terrain rendering

TL;DR: The experiment shows that wavelet packet analysis can extract the initial fault character effectively and the support vector machine method can identify those initial faults of rolling bearing correctly.
Abstract: Aim at the problem of lacking fault data on aero-engine fault diagnosis,a rolling bearing initial fault diagnosis method based on support vector machine and wavelet packet is proposedThrough a finite learning samples, the function relationship between the initial fault character and it's running state is established based on Structural Risk Minimization, which is so-called faults classifierBy the faults classifier's output, the type of rolling bearing initial fault is determinedThe experiment shows that wavelet packet analysis can extract the initial fault character effectively and the support vector machine method can identify those initial faults of rolling bearing correctly

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the influence of multimedia and traditional presentations on the academic achievement of college students enrolled in an introduction to aviation class at a historically Black institution located in a southern state.
Abstract: The aims of this study were threefold: first, to evaluate the effect of multimedia presentations vs. traditional presentations on the academic achievement of college students enrolled in an introduction to aviation class at a historically Black institution located in a southern state; second, to investigate the influence of gender, experience, and class attendance on the academic achievement of aviation students; and finally, to assess the influence of type presentation (multimedia and traditional) on the course satisfaction scores of aviation students. A posttest-only control-group design was employed in this investigation to collect and analyze the data. 25 students (16 exposed to traditional presentations and 9 exposed to multimedia presentations) were selected to participate in this empirical study. Two instruments, entitled Questionnaire on the Effect of Traditional Method Presentations and Questionnaire on the Effect of Multimedia Presentations, were used to gather the data. The results of the data analysis showed no significant difference between the written examination scores of aviation students by type of presentation. An interesting finding of the study was the significant influence of the variables gender and class attendance on the academic performance of aviation students. Female students did significantly better on the written examination than their male counterparts. In addition, students who missed fewer days did better on examinations than those who missed more days.
