TL;DR: In this article, a pre-flawed fan disc was used to obtain a more intensive insight of crack growth characteristic in the bore area, and the variation of the surface crack length was measured by the replication method, and then the crack surface fractography was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM).

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as discussed by the authors designed a highly reliable, low-cost housekeeping system using industrial devices, which includes dual modular redundancy, CPU warm backup, static triple modular redundancy scheme, and two-level watchdogs.
Abstract: The ZDPS-1A pico-satellite designed in Zhejiang University with a mass of 3.5 kg and a power consumption of less than 3.5 W is the smallest satellite in China up to now. The housekeeping system (HKS) is the core part of ZDPS-1A. The reliability of HKS has an important influence on the safety of the satellite. Traditional fault-tolerant methods do not apply to ZDPS-1A due to such pico-satellite characteristics as light weight, compactness in size, energy saving, and high integration. This paper deals with a highly-reliable, low-cost design for HKS using industrial devices. The reliable strategies of HKS include a dual modular redundancy scheme, CPU warm backup, a static triple modular redundancy scheme, and two-level watchdogs. Recursive experiments, special tests, and environmental tests show that this system meets the design target. This design has already been applied to ZDPS-1A, which was launched to execute in-orbit tasks on Sept. 22, 2010. To date, the satellite has been in a proper state for more than 15 months.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the thermal shock resistance of Yb:Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) transparent ceramic considered as a potential solid-state laser material and measured the residual flexural strength and Vickers radial cracks as a function of thermal shock temperature difference.

TL;DR: In this paper, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been used for both flow-field visualization and quantitative assessment of aerodynamic parameters in a shock tube environment, of special interest are the high temperature effects in the post-shock region of bodies travelling at hypervelocity.
Abstract: A Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been used for both flow-field visualization and quantitative assessment of aerodynamic parameters in a shock tube environment. Of special interest are the high- temperature effects in the post-shock region of bodies travelling at hypervelocity. Infinite-fringe interferograms give the density contours of the flow field and, in combination with an equilibrium real gas code, they can be used to provide information on the non-equilibrium state of the dissociating flow.

TL;DR: In this paper, a series of Pitot traverses through a range of jet diameters and pitch angles has been made in order to characterize the jet development and to produce an axisymmetric jet profile.
Abstract: The velocity profiles of air-jet vortex generators have been investigated, and the effect of varying velocity profiles on vortex production has been assessed. In the simplest case of a jet generated by fluid effusing through a cylindrical hole drilled into a solid surface, the internal flow in the nozzle is critical to the development of jets to be used for vortex production. A series of Pitot traverses through a range of jet diameters and pitch angles has been made in order to characterize the jet development. In order to produce an axisymmetric jet profile, modifications were made to the jet nozzles, thereby overcoming the critical flow features within the jet nozzle. In order to assess the jets for vortex production, a range of air-jet vortex generator configurations have been used to produce discrete vortices in a turbulent flat plate boundary layer. Velocity vectors were measured over a cross-stream plane through the vortices, from which the vorticity could be derived across the plane. The vor...
