TL;DR: The syntax and semantics of Datalog and its use for querying a relational database are presented, and the most relevant methods for achieving efficient evaluations of Daloog queries are presented.
Abstract: Datalog, a database query language based on the logic programming paradigm, is described. The syntax and semantics of Datalog and its use for querying a relational database are presented. Optimization methods for achieving efficient evaluations of Datalog queries are classified, and the most relevant methods are presented. Various improvements of Datalog currently under study are discussed, and what is still needed in order to extend Datalog's applicability to the solution of real-life problems is indicated. >

TL;DR: The experiments studying coherence dynamics show that 1D Bose gases are ideally suited for investigating one-dimensional systems, such as superconductors, quantum Hall systems, superfluid helium and spin systems.
Abstract: This paper reports a direct experimental study of the coherence dynamics in both isolated and coupled degenerate one-dimensional (1D) Bose gases. Completely isolated 1D Bose gases exhibit coherence decay in excellent agreement with recent predictions. The coherence of two coupled 1D Bose gases decays to a finite value, analogous to the phase locking of two lasers by injection. Low-dimensional systems provide beautiful examples of many-body quantum physics1. For one-dimensional (1D) systems2, the Luttinger liquid approach3 provides insight into universal properties. Much is known of the equilibrium state, both in the weakly4,5,6,7 and strongly8,9 interacting regimes. However, it remains a challenge to probe the dynamics by which this equilibrium state is reached10. Here we present a direct experimental study of the coherence dynamics in both isolated and coupled degenerate 1D Bose gases. Dynamic splitting is used to create two 1D systems in a phase coherent state11. The time evolution of the coherence is revealed through local phase shifts of the subsequently observed interference patterns. Completely isolated 1D Bose gases are observed to exhibit universal sub-exponential coherence decay, in excellent agreement with recent predictions12. For two coupled 1D Bose gases, the coherence factor is observed to approach a non-zero equilibrium value, as predicted by a Bogoliubov approach13. This coupled-system decay to finite coherence is the matter wave equivalent of phase-locking two lasers by injection. The non-equilibrium dynamics of superfluids has an important role in a wide range of physical systems, such as superconductors, quantum Hall systems, superfluid helium and spin systems14,15,16. Our experiments studying coherence dynamics show that 1D Bose gases are ideally suited for investigating this class of phenomena.

TL;DR: The method reconstructs highly slanted surfaces and achieves impressive disparity details with sub-pixel precision and allows for explicit treatment of occlusions and can handle large untextured regions.
Abstract: Common local stereo methods match support windows at integer-valued disparities. The implicit assumption that pixels within the support region have constant disparity does not hold for slanted surfaces and leads to a bias towards reconstructing frontoparallel surfaces. This work overcomes this bias by estimating an individual 3D plane at each pixel onto which the support region is projected. The major challenge of this approach is to find a pixel’s optimal 3D plane among all possible planes whose number is infinite. We show that an ideal algorithm to solve this problem is PatchMatch [1] that we extend to find an approximate nearest neighbor according to a plane. In addition to Patch-Match’s spatial propagation scheme, we propose (1) view propagation where planes are propagated among left and right views of the stereo pair and (2) temporal propagation where planes are propagated from preceding and consecutive frames of a video when doing temporal stereo. Adaptive support weights are used in matching cost aggregation to improve results at disparity borders. We also show that our slanted support windows can be used to compute a cost volume for global stereo methods, which allows for explicit treatment of occlusions and can handle large untextured regions. In the results we demonstrate that our method reconstructs highly slanted surfaces and achieves impressive disparity details with sub-pixel precision. In the Middlebury table, our method is currently top-performer among local methods and takes rank 2 among approximately 110 competitors if sub-pixel precision is considered.

TL;DR: There is no good reason to continue to use the [mean+/-2 sdev] rule, originally proposed as a 'filter' to identify approximately 2(1/2)% of the data at each extreme for further inspection at a time when computers to do the drudgery of numerical operations were not widely available and no other practical methods existed.

TL;DR: A survey of some of the most important lines of hybridization of metaheuristics with other techniques for optimization, which includes, for example, the combination of exact algorithms and meta heuristics.
Abstract: Research in metaheuristics for combinatorial optimization problems has lately experienced a noteworthy shift towards the hybridization of metaheuristics with other techniques for optimization. At the same time, the focus of research has changed from being rather algorithm-oriented to being more problem-oriented. Nowadays the focus is on solving the problem at hand in the best way possible, rather than promoting a certain metaheuristic. This has led to an enormously fruitful cross-fertilization of different areas of optimization. This cross-fertilization is documented by a multitude of powerful hybrid algorithms that were obtained by combining components from several different optimization techniques. Hereby, hybridization is not restricted to the combination of different metaheuristics but includes, for example, the combination of exact algorithms and metaheuristics. In this work we provide a survey of some of the most important lines of hybridization. The literature review is accompanied by the presentation of illustrative examples.
