Abstract: We propose a framework for pairwise registration of shapes represented by point cloud data (PCD). We assume that the points are sampled from a surface and formulate the problem of aligning two PCDs as a minimization of the squared distance between the underlying surfaces. Local quadratic approximants of the squared distance function are used to develop a linear system whose solution gives the best aligning rigid transform for the given pair of point clouds. The rigid transform is applied and the linear system corresponding to the new orientation is build. This process is iterated until it converges. The point-to-point and the point-to-plane Iterated Closest Point (ICP) algorithms can be treated as special cases in this framework. Our algorithm can align PCDs even when they are placed far apart, and is experimentally found to be more stable than point-to-plane ICP. We analyze the convergence behavior of our algorithm and of point-to-point and point-to-plane ICP under our proposed framework, and derive bounds on their rate of convergence. We compare the stability and convergence properties of our algorithm with other registration algorithms on a variety of scanned data. © The Eurographics Association 2004.

Abstract: Efficient lignin depolymerization is unique to the wood decay basidiomycetes, collectively referred to as white rot fungi. Phanerochaete chrysosporium simultaneously degrades lignin and cellulose, whereas the closely related species, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, also depolymerizes lignin but may do so with relatively little cellulose degradation. To investigate the basis for selective ligninolysis, we conducted comparative genome analysis of C. subvermispora and P. chrysosporium. Genes encoding manganese peroxidase numbered 13 and five in C. subvermispora and P. chrysosporium, respectively. In addition, the C. subvermispora genome contains at least seven genes predicted to encode laccases, whereas the P. chrysosporium genome contains none. We also observed expansion of the number of C. subvermispora desaturase-encoding genes putatively involved in lipid metabolism. Microarray-based transcriptome analysis showed substantial up-regulation of several desaturase and MnP genes in wood-containing medium. MS identified MnP proteins in C. subvermispora culture filtrates, but none in P. chrysosporium cultures. These results support the importance of MnP and a lignin degradation mechanism whereby cleavage of the dominant nonphenolic structures is mediated by lipid peroxidation products. Two C. subvermispora genes were predicted to encode peroxidases structurally similar to P. chrysosporium lignin peroxidase and, following heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, the enzymes were shown to oxidize high redox potential substrates, but not Mn2+. Apart from oxidative lignin degradation, we also examined cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic systems in both fungi. In summary, the C. subvermispora genetic inventory and expression patterns exhibit increased oxidoreductase potential and diminished cellulolytic capability relative to P. chrysosporium.

Abstract: Graphene-based photodetectors are promising new devices for high-speed optoelectronic applications. However, despite recent efforts it is not clear what determines the ultimate speed limit of these devices. Here, we present measurements of the intrinsic response time of metal–graphene–metal photodetectors with monolayer graphene using an optical correlation technique with ultrashort laser pulses. We obtain a response time of 2.1 ps that is mainly given by the short lifetime of the photogenerated carriers. This time translates into a bandwidth of ∼262 GHz. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of the response time on gate voltage and illumination laser power.

Abstract: The addition of aggregates has been one of the most relevant enhancements to the language of answer set programming (ASP). They strengthen the modeling power of ASP, in terms of concise problem representations. While many important problems can be encoded using nonrecursive aggregates, some relevant examples lend themselves for the use of recursive aggregates. Previous semantic definitions typically agree in the nonrecursive case, but the picture is less clear for recursion. Some proposals explicitly avoid recursive aggregates, most others differ, and many of them do not satisfy desirable criteria, such as minimality or coincidence with answer sets in the aggregate-free case.
