TL;DR: The results revealed two processes, colloidal flocculation and coagulation of metals in the low-salinity zone and an estuarine turbidity maximum in the high salinity zone as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Concentrations of rare earth elements (REE) and yttrium (Y), and major metals (Al, Fe and Mn) were measured in suspended particulate matter (SPM) and bottom sediments of the Kali estuary, western India, for their distribution and fractionation. The contents of SPM and metals in it were more uniform along the longitudinal transect during the monsoon. During the post- and pre-monsoons, low SPM in the upper/middle estuary coincided with high Fe and Mn and total REE (∑REE). But in the lower estuary SPM and its ∑REE content increased seaward, while Fe and Mn decreased. The Y/Ho ratios decreased seaward during the monsoon but increased during the post-monsoon. Sm/Nd ratios were more uniform along the transect during monsoon but decreased marginally seaward in other seasons. The Post-Archean Average Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized REE patterns exhibited middle REE and heavy REE enrichment with positive Ce ($${\text{Ce}}/{\text{Ce}}^{*}$$ ), Eu ($${\text{Eu}}/{\text{Eu}}^{*}$$ ) and Y anomalies. The $${\text{Ce}}/{\text{Ce}}^{*}$$ increased but $${\text{Eu}}/{\text{Eu}}^{*}$$ decreased marginally seaward. The fine-grained sediments showed higher ∑REE and lower Y/Ho ratios than in coarse-grained sediments. The PAAS-normalized REE patterns of sediment were similar to that of SPM. The results revealed two processes, colloidal flocculation and coagulation of metals in the low-salinity zone and an estuarine turbidity maximum in the high salinity zone. Rare earths and yttrium (REY) in SPM and sediments primarily reflected the source rock composition than that of chemical weathering. Apart from physico-chemical processes, the mineralogy and grain size of sediments controlled the distribution and fractionation of REY in the estuary.

TL;DR: This study identified candidate genes related to iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) metabolism through gene expression analysis and correlated it with known QTL regions for GFeC/GZnC.
Abstract: Pearl millet is an important crop for alleviating micronutrient malnutrition through genomics-assisted breeding for grain Fe (GFeC) and Zn (GZnC) content. In this study, we identified candidate genes related to iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) metabolism through gene expression analysis and correlated it with known QTL regions for GFeC/GZnC. From a total of 114 Fe and Zn metabolism-related genes that were selected from the related crop species, we studied 29 genes. Different developmental stages exhibited tissue and stage-specific expressions for Fe and Zn metabolism genes in parents contrasting for GFeC and GZnC. Results revealed that PglZIP, PglNRAMP and PglFER gene families were candidates for GFeC and GZnC. Ferritin-like gene, PglFER1 may be the potential candidate gene for GFeC. Promoter analysis revealed Fe and Zn deficiency, hormone, metal-responsive, and salt-regulated elements. Genomic regions underlying GFeC and GZnC were validated by annotating major QTL regions for grain Fe and Zn. Interestingly, PglZIP and PglNRAMP gene families were found common with a previously reported linkage group 7 major QTL region for GFeC and GZnC. The study provides insights into the foundation for functional dissection of different Fe and Zn metabolism genes homologs and their subsequent use in pearl millet molecular breeding programs globally.

TL;DR: In this paper, the results from thermal (DSC and TGA) and thermo-mechanical (DMA) studies indicated that the incorporation of octamaleimide functionalized POSS into unsaturated polyester systems appreciably improved the thermal properties of the hybrid nanocomposites according to their percentage concentration.
Abstract: Unsaturated polyester (UP)-POSS hybrid nanocomposites have been developed successfully through the reaction between maleimide groups Octa (maleimido phenyl) silsesquioxane (OMPS) and olefinic reactive sites (maleimide and styrenic units) present in the unsaturated polyester resin system through free radical polymerization using benzoyl peroxide (BP) as the initiator. The hybrid molecular structure of nanocomposites resulted was evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopy. The data obtained from XRD, SEM and TEM analysis ascertain the presence of homogeneous morphology and nanoscale dispersion of OMPS into the polyester hybrid nanocomposites. Data resulted from thermal (DSC and TGA) and thermo-mechanical (DMA) studies indicated that the incorporation of octamaleimide functionalized POSS into unsaturated polyester systems appreciably improved the thermal properties of the hybrid nanocomposites according to their percentage concentration.
