Abstract: [1] The occurrence of an additional layer, called F3 layer, in the equatorial ionosphere at American, Indian, and Australian longitudes during the super double geomagnetic storm of 7–11 November 2004 is presented using observations and modeling. The observations show the occurrence, reoccurrence, and quick ascent to the topside ionosphere of unusually strong F3 layer in Australian longitude during the first super storm (8 November) and in Indian longitude during the second super storm (10 November), all with large reductions in peak electron density (Nmax) and total electron content (GPS-TEC). The unusual F3 layers can arise mainly from unusually strong fluctuations in the daytime vertical E × B drift as indicated by the observations and modeling in American longitude. The strongest upward E × B drift (or eastward prompt penetration electric field, PPEF) ever recorded (at Jicamarca) produces unusually strong F3 layer in the afternoon hours (≈1400–1600 LT) of PPEF, with large reductions in Nmax and TEC; the layer also reappears in the following evening (≈1700–1800 LT) owing to an unusually large downward drift. At night, when the drift is unusually upward and strong, the F region splits into two layers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the vertical distribution of aerosols over a continental, urban location, Bangalore in southern India, using a micro pulse lidar (MPL) operated for about two years (2004 and 2005), was examined.
Abstract: Knowledge of the vertical distribution of aerosols in the atmosphere is important in estimating its radiative forcing. While aircraft based measurements over two locations in India have provided valuable information, the temporal coverage of measurements was limited. In this paper, we examine the vertical distribution of aerosols over a continental, urban location, Bangalore in southern India, using a micro pulse lidar (MPL) operated for about two years (2004 and 2005), and infer the effects of the boundary layer dynamics. Early morning hours are characterized by a shallow aerosol layer, a few hundred meters thick. As day advances, the strong convective eddies are seen to transport the aerosols vertically up to more than 1500 m. Seasonal changes in the aerosol vertical structure, contribution of the boundary layer aerosols to the column optical depth as well as the frequency of occurrence of clouds within aerosol layer are examined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the variations of solid loading from 80 to 89% at constant aluminum cotent, variation of aluminium from 0 to 22%, and the coarse-to-fine ratio of the oxidizer were investigated.
Abstract: Composite solid propellants based on hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) have become the workhorse propellants in the present-day solid rocket motors. The other major ingredients of a composite propellant are the crystalline oxidizer and metallic fuel. As the solid loading of such propellants is as high as 86–90%, their rheological behavior is very complex. The propellant slurry needs to have reasonably low viscosity and a long pot life for better casting and, hence, for a defect-free rocket motor. The primary factors affecting the solid propellant viscosity are solid content, particle size, shape, and distribution. The present study concerns the variations of solid loading from 80 to 89% at constant aluminum cotent, variation of aluminium from 0 to 22% at constant solid loading, and the coarse-to-fine ratio of the oxidizer. The plots of yield stress, consistency index, pseudoplasticity index, and thixotropic index at different time intervals are drawn for all these parametric changes. Based on these rheological studies, the optimum ratio of oxidizer coarse-to-fine ratio, aluminum content, and level of solid loading have been determined.
