TL;DR: The 1st International Workshop on High-Order CFD Methods was successfully held in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 7-8, 2012, just before the 50th Aerospace Sciences Meeting as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: After several years of planning, the 1st International Workshop on High-Order CFD Methods was successfully held in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 7-8, 2012, just before the 50th Aerospace Sciences Meeting. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the German Aerospace Center provided much needed support, financial and moral. Over 70 participants from all over the world across the research spectrum of academia, government labs, and private industry attended the workshop. Many exciting results were presented. In this review article, the main motivation and major findings from the workshop are described. Pacing items requiring further effort are presented. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: An image-processing technique that performs iterative interrogation of particle image velocimetry (PIV) recordings based on cross-correlation enhances the matching performances by means of a relative transformation between the interrogation areas, showing that a remarkable improvement can be obtained in terms of precision and dynamic range.
Abstract: An image-processing technique is proposed, which performs iterative interrogation of particle image velocimetry (PIV) recordings. The method is based on cross-correlation, enhancing the matching performances by means of a relative transformation between the interrogation areas. On the basis of an iterative prediction of the tracers motion, window offset and deformation are applied, accounting for the local deformation of the fluid continuum. In addition, progressive grid refinement is applied in order to maximise the spatial resolution. The performances of the method are analysed and compared with the conventional cross correlation with and without the effect of a window discrete offset. The assessment of performance through synthetic PIV images shows that a remarkable improvement can be obtained in terms of precision and dynamic range. Moreover, peak-locking effects do not affect the method in practice. The velocity gradient range accessed with the application of a relative window deformation (linear approximation) is significantly enlarged, as confirmed in the experimental results.

TL;DR: The improved cross-correlation algorithm has been applied to the measurement of the turbulent flow past a backward facing step (BFS) and a systematic comparison is presented with Direct Numerical Simulation data available on the subject.
Abstract: The features of an improved algorithm for the interrogation of (digital) particle image velocimetry (PIV) pictures are described. The method is based on cross-correlation. It makes use of a translation of the interrogation areas. Such a displacement is predicted and corrected by means of an iterative procedure. In addition, while iterating, the method allows a refinement of the size of the interrogation areas. The quality of the measured vectors is controlled with data validation criteria applied at each intermediate step of the iteration process. A brief section explains the expected improvements in terms of dynamic range and resolution. The accuracy is assessed analysing images with imposed displacement fields. The improved cross-correlation algorithm has been applied to the measurement of the turbulent flow past a backward facing step (BFS). A systematic comparison is presented with Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data available on the subject.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new method to model the effect of the solid boundaries on the rest of the flowfield in large-eddy simulations is proposed, where the filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved up to the first computational point from there to the wall, a simplified set of equations is solved, and an estimate of the instantaneous wall shear stress required to impose boundary conditions is obtained.
Abstract: A new method to model the effect of the solid boundaries on the rest of the flowfield in large-eddy simulations is proposed The filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved up to the first computational point From there to the wall, a simplified set of equations is solved, and an estimate of the instantaneous wall shear stress required to impose boundary conditions is obtained Computations performed for the plane channel, square duct, and the rotating channel flow cases gave improved results compared with existing models The additional computing time required by the model is on the order of 10-15% of the overall computing time The mean flow quantities and low-order statistics, which are of primary interest in engineering calculations, are in very good agreement with the reference data available in the literature
