Abstract: In Japan, a set of experiences called kanashibari is considered identical with isolated sleep paralysis. We investigated this phenomenon by means of a questionnaire administered to 635 college students (390 men and 245 women). Of all subjects, about 40% had experienced at least one episode of kanashibari [subjects of K(+)]. Therefore, isolated sleep paralysis is apparently a more common phenomenon than is usually appreciated. About half of the subjects of K(+) reported that they had been under "physical or psychological stress" or in a "disturbed sleep and wakefulness cycle" immediately before the episode. Many subjects of K(+) experienced the first episode in adolescence. In the distribution of age of first attack, the peak occurred at an earlier age in women subjects than in men subjects. These findings suggest that two factors influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. One is exogenous physical or psychological load and the other is endogenous biological development.

Abstract: Ferroelectric switching characteristics of VDF/TrFE copolymers have been investigated over the entire range of composition for the samples subjected to drawing and/or annealing. Switching phenomena were most remarkably observed in the copolymers containing 50–80 mol% VDF. The as-cast copolymer exhibits no switching behavior because of high a depolarization field associated with low crystallinity. Draw-induced orientation of the chain axis parallel to the film surface causes an increase in the amount of reversed polarization. Annealing at a temperature between the Curie point and the melting point results in a significant increase in the degree of crystallinity and the amount of reversed polarization. Extrapolating to 100% crystallinity allows an estimation of spontaneous polarization, which is 120–135 mC/m2 for the 73/27 mol% copolymer. This value suggests a small Lorentz factor in crystals of VDF/TrFE copolymers.

Abstract: Chaos has been observed from a four-element autonomous circuit whose only nonlinear element is a two-terminal resistor characterized by a three-segment piecewise-linear \upsilon-i characteristic. Both laboratory measurements and computer simulations have confirmed the chaotic behavior to have resulted from the breakdown of a "quasi-periodic" attractor (torus) into a "folded torus." A two-parameter bifurcation diagram is carefully constructed to predict and explain various observed bifurcation phenomena, such as rotation number, devil's staircase, and Arnold tongue.

Abstract: This article is a survey study, followed by an experimental study, examining the differences of sleep-wake habits and sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) variables between morning and evening type subjects (Ss). In the survey study, the Japanese version of the Horne and Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and Life Habits Inventory (LHI) were administered to approximately 1,500 university students. The survey results showed that the two types were significantly different from each other in terms of retiring and arising time, sleep latency, mood on arising, nap, adequate amount of sleep, number of times of staying awake all night, and variability in bedtime, arising time, and sleep length. These results suggested that evening type Ss had more irregular and/or flexible sleep-wake habits than morning type Ss. In the experimental study, 10 morning and 11 evening type Ss were selected from the population included in the survey study, and polysomnograms were obtained. The results showed that only in rapid eye movement (REM) latency did morning type Ss significantly differ from evening type Ss. REM latency might be related to personality factors, particularly to neuroticism and anxiety.

Abstract: This paper describes three extremely simple electronic circuits in which chaotic phenomena have been observed. The simplicity of the circuits allows one to i) build them easily, ii) confirm the observed phenomena by digital computer simulation, and in some cases iii) rigorously prove the circuit is indeed chaotic. A consequence of i) is that the interested reader can build, and then see and even listen to chaos. It is to be emphasized that these circuits are not analog computers. They are real physical systems.

Abstract: A comparison is made between high speed cinematography and optical temperature measurements of the solidification of an undercooled Ni-25 wt pct Sn alloy The first part of this study notes that solidification during the recalescence period at all undercoolings studied occurred in the form of a dendritelike front moving across the sample surface, and that the growth velocities observed agree with calculation results for the dendrite growth model of Lipton et al (1986); it is concluded that the coarse structure observed comprises an array of much finer, solute-controlled dendrites In the second part, attention is given to the solidification of levitated metal samples within a transparent glass medium for the cases of two undercooled Ni-Sn alloys, one of which is eutectic and another hypoeutectic The data obtained suggest a solidification model involving dendrites of very fine structure growing into the melt at temperatures near the bulk undercooling temperature

Abstract: Advanced robots will have to not only have 'hard' functions but also have 'soft' functions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to realize 'soft' functions of robots such as dexterity, speediness and intelligence by the development of an anthropomorphic intelligent robot playing keyboard instrument. Abstract: This paper reports on recent developments in the rise of bioethics in Japan. Much of the recent interest in bioethics in Japan is seen as a response to various civic movements. The women's liberation movement, access to equal opportunity, and the recognition of patients' rights and the importance of informed consent are among some of the movements influencing the development of bioethics in Japan. The author argues that this movement is to be encouraged and fostered by health care professionals, public policy makers, as well as lay persons in Japan.

Abstract: Under the conditions of citric acid fermentation, Aspergillus niger WU-2223L possessed at least two respiratory systems. One system was sensitive to cyanide (CN) and the other was sensitive to salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM). The respiration of mycelia was partially, inhibited by CN or SHAM, and was completely inhibited in the presence of both CN and SHAM. With culture time, the CN-sensitivity of respiration decreased and the SHAM-sensitivity increased. The respiratory rate itself decreased suddenly at 4 days and thereafter remained at a low level. The SHAM-sensitive respiration was localized in the mitochondria. The alterations of respiration in the mitochondria were similar to those observed in mycelial cells.

Abstract: Investigation on amorphous ferrite CaO-Bi2O3-Fe2O3 system has been carried out. This is one of new types of amorphous ferrites using antiferromagnetic oxides as starting materials instead of ferrimagnetic oxides. In some compositions ferromagnetic behaviors were observed. Especially, (CaO)20− (Bi2O3)15(Fe2O3)65 glass has magnetization value of 13.2emu/g at room temperature in applied magnetic field of 10 kOe. This value can not be obtained by any pure crystalline calcium ferrite. Mossbauer absorption spectra were measured to clarify the magnetic structure of the glass.

Abstract: Interface reaction between Ni thin film and bulk SiC during heat treatment was investigated by MeV ion backscattering spectrometry using resonance scattering of helium‐carbon, x‐ray diffraction, and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Polycrystalline nickel‐silicide, Ni2Si, was formed by heat treatment at 600 °C in forming gas. Carbon compounds were not detected in the reaction products. Carbon was distributed uniformly with a concentration of about 25 at. % in the reacted film, and the C KLL line shape of AES in the reaction products as similar to that of elementary carbon.

Abstract: In order to get a comprehensive understanding of a microscopic structure of the Si/SiO2 interfaces, various interface models constructed by using plastic balls and spokes have been characterized in terms of distortion energy and composition of the interface region in the models The distortion energy has been represented by Keating-type potential The composition has been simulated with our hypothetical atom probe measurements The magnitude of the distortion energy at the interface depends on the orientation of crystalline Si and decreases in the order of (100), (110) and (111) The distortion energy at the (100)Si/SiO2 interface delineated by (111) facets is smaller than the one at the flat and abrupt interface These results are in good agreement with TEM observations that the (111)Si/SiO2, interface is flat while the (100)Si/SiO2 interface is usually rough A transition region which apparently seems to be stoichiometric SiO is identified by the hypothetical atom probe measurement between crystalline Si and SiO2 in the model of the (100)Si/SiO2 interface delineated by {111} facets

The occurrence conditions and Equation of Envelope which govern the aspect of the resonance are presented using the method of multiple scales, and then confirmed by simulations. From the parametric resonance viewpoints, unstable phenomena of long-term dynamics with poor damping are also reviewed with nonlinear analysis and simulations.

Abstract: A new pin-cushion type two-dimensional position sensitive detector (PSD) with a good linear response, in which the adjacent point-electrodes are connected by a straight resistive strip, has been developed. In the PSD, the ratio of sensitive area to the total detector area is almost unity. The experimental results show that, for achieving a good linear response in a two-dimensional pattern, the resistance of the resistive strip should be 1 10 to 1 15 lower than the surface resistance per unit square in the resistive anode. Under such a condition, the maximum deviation from the linear relation, which occurs at each corner, is less than 2%.
