TL;DR: In this article, the apparent shape of the shadow of a black hole is determined by observing its radius and distortion parameter. And the spin parameter and inclination angle of a Kerr black hole can also be determined by the observed apparent shape.
Abstract: A black hole casts a shadow as an optical appearance because of its strong gravitational field. We study how to determine the spin parameter and the inclination angle by observing the apparent shape of the shadow, which is distorted mainly by those two parameters. Defining some observables characterizing the apparent shape (its radius and distortion parameter), we find that the spin parameter and inclination angle of a Kerr black hole can be determined by the observation. This technique is also extended to the case of a Kerr naked singularity.

TL;DR: Radical polymers as mentioned in this paper are aliphatic or nonconjugated polymers bearing organic robust radicals as pendant groups per repeating unit, which allows the efficient redox gradient-driven electron transport through the polymer layer by outer-sphere self-exchange reactions in electrolyte solutions.
Abstract: Radical polymers are aliphatic or nonconjugated polymers bearing organic robust radicals as pendant groups per repeating unit. A large population of the radical redox sites allows the efficient redox gradient-driven electron transport through the polymer layer by outer-sphere self-exchange reactions in electrolyte solutions. The radical polymers are emerging as a new class of electroactive materials useful for various kinds of wet-type energy storage, transport, and conversion devices. Electric-field-driven charge transport by hopping between the densely populated radical sites is also a remarkable aspect of the radical polymers in the solid state, which leads to many dry-type devices such as organic memories, diodes, and switches.

TL;DR: The production of functional cardiac tissue sheets with perfusable blood vessels is reported, which increase the thickness and survival of transplanted tissue.
Abstract: In vitro fabrication of functional vascularized three-dimensional tissues has been a long-standing objective in the field of tissue engineering. Here we report a technique to engineer cardiac tissues with perfusable blood vessels in vitro. Using resected tissue with a connectable artery and vein as a vascular bed, we overlay triple-layer cardiac cell sheets produced from coculture with endothelial cells, and support the tissue construct with media perfused in a bioreactor. We show that endothelial cells connect to capillaries in the vascular bed and form tubular lumens, creating in vitro perfusable blood vessels in the cardiac cell sheets. Thicker engineered tissues can be produced in vitro by overlaying additional triple-layer cell sheets. The vascularized cardiac tissues beat and can be transplanted with blood vessel anastomoses. This technique may create new opportunities for in vitro tissue engineering and has potential therapeutic applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, the production of e(+)e(-) pairs for m(e+e-) < 0.3 GeV/c(2) and 1 < p(T) < 5 GeV /c is measured in p + p and Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV.
Abstract: The production of e(+)e(-) pairs for m(e+e-) < 0.3 GeV/c(2) and 1< p(T) < 5 GeV/c is measured in p + p and Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. An enhanced yield above hadronic sources is observed. Treating the excess as photon internal conversions, the invariant yield of direct photons is deduced. In central Au + Au collisions, the excess of the direct photon yield over p + p is exponential in transverse momentum, with an inverse slope T = 221 +/- 19(stat) +/- 19(syst) MeV. Hydrodynamical models with initial temperatures ranging from T-init similar to 300-600 MeV at times of similar to 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision are in qualitative agreement with the data. Lattice QCD predicts a phase transition to quark gluon plasma at similar to 170 MeV.

TL;DR: In this paper, it has been confirmed analytically and by simulations that the multiple load flow solutions are likely to appear under the heavy-loaded conditions, and that the individual solutions of the solution pair have different features from each other, from the standpoint of stability, although they are close to each other.
Abstract: There have been observed several voltage instability phenomena in electric power systems where receiving end voltages oscillate remarkably or get much lower than the nominal values. Those phenomena tend to occur in heavy loaded conditions and seem to be related to the multiple load flow solution problem for the following reasons. It has been confirmed analytically and by simulations that the multiple load flow solutions are likely to appear under the heavy-loaded conditions, and that the individual solutions of the solution pair have different features from each other, from the standpoint of stability, although they are close to each other.
