TL;DR: In this article, a magneto-optic current transducer (MOCT) is used to measure the rotation of the plane of polarization by a magnetic field exhibited in certain glasses.
Abstract: A current measurement technique using the magneto-optic or Faraday effect, has been developed, tested, and demonstrated. The device developed is a magneto-optic current transducer (MOCT). It uses the rotation of the plane of polarization by a magnetic field exhibited in certain glasses (Faraday effect). Test data obtained in an extensive field evaluation of the MOCT were compared with the design qualification data gathered during the development phase of this project. The analysis indicates that operation of the MOCT-based metering system under field conditions compares favorably with performance predicted during design qualification. >

TL;DR: In this article, a constant axial magnetic field B/sub ax/ was produced in the gap between opening Bruce-profile, chromium-copper contacts with peak arc currents up to 40 kA at 50 Hz.
Abstract: In one series of experiments, a constant axial magnetic field B/sub ax/ was produced in the gap between opening Bruce-profile, chromium-copper contacts. Peak arc currents up to 40 kA at 50 Hz were studied with B/sub ax/ u to 112 mT. For each peak current, a critical field B/sub crit/ was determined above which anode spots did not form. For B/sub ax/ greater than B/sub crit/, the time from contact parting to the formation of a diffuse vacuum arc was linearly dependent on separation current. In a second series, the contacts were designed to generate a self B/sub ax/ when AC current up to 123 kA peak flowed. This field was approximately proportional to the current waveform through the contacts, and it was always higher than the B/sub crit/ predicted for the instantaneous current. The time from contact parting to the formation of the diffuse arc was consistent with that observed in the first experimental series. Once the diffuse arc had formed, the contacts showed no distributed melting for currents up to 81 kA, but gross melting occurred at 102-123 kA. The formation of diffuse arcs is discussed, and the anode melting is explained. >

16 Nov 1992TL;DR: A positive off mechanism for a circuit breaker includes a pair of positive off lever slideable in slots in the side plates and extendable into the path of the operating handle to prevent movement of the handle to the off position when the contacts are welded closed as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A positive off mechanism for a circuit breaker includes a pair of positive off levers slideable in slots in the side plates and extendable into the path of the operating handle to prevent movement of the handle to the off position when the contacts are welded closed. The positive off levers are actuated by positive off links pivotally mounted to the side plates and coupled to the positive off levers by "dog bone" connections. The positive off links in turn are actuated by the toggle mechanism of the circuit breaker which collapses to open the contacts during normal circuit breaker operation, but which remains erect when the contacts are welded closed.

07 Oct 1994TL;DR: In this paper, a pump is provided for use in a solid state mass-spectrograph for analyzing a sample gas, which is formed from a semiconductor substrate having a cavity with an inlet, a mass filter section adjacent the gas ionizing section and a detector area adjacent the mass filter.
Abstract: A pump is provided for use in a solid state mass-spectrograph for analyzing a sample gas. The spectrograph is formed from a semiconductor substrate having a cavity with an inlet, gas ionizing section adjacent the inlet, a mass filter section adjacent the gas ionizing section and a detector section adjacent the mass filter section. The pump is connected to each of the sections of said cavity and evacuates the cavity and draws the sample gas into the cavity. The pump includes at least one diaphragm and electrically-actuated resistor. The resistor generates heat upon electrical actuation thereby causing the diaphragm to accomplish a suction stroke which evacuates the cavity and draws the sample gas into the cavity. Preferably, the diaphragm is formed from a bilayered metal material having different thermal expansion rates or from a shape memory alloy.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe thermoelectric cooling devices for the electronics industry and medicine, and demonstrate their applications in the medical field and in the computer science field, respectively.
Abstract: Practical thermoelectric cooling has become a reality with the development of thermoelectric semiconductor materials. To illustrate this type of cooling, several devices which represent applications in the electronics industry and medicine are described.
