TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that there is a window in the acid concentration which provides long-term solution stability, and that the gels formed from these clear solutions shrink in their liquor under certain conditions and the introduction of hydrogen peroxide into the liquor causes vigorous gel shrinkage.
Abstract: Titanium alkoxides hydrolyse vigorously with water producing polycondensates whose equivalent oxide content varies from ∼ 70% to over 90%. This variation reflects the average molecular size and the nature of the terminal bonds. Hydrolysis conditions also affect the molecular and particle morphologies modifying the crystallization and sintering behaviour of oxide materials derived from polycondensates. It is also possible to form clear polymer solutions under excess water hydrolysis with the addition of certain acids. Investigations show that there is a window in the acid concentration which provides long-term solution stability. The gels formed from these clear solutions shrink in their liquor under certain conditions and the introduction of hydrogen peroxide into the liquor (surrounding the gel) causes vigorous gel shrinkage.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the use of polarized light for the engineering field is presented, focusing on its applications in the study of stresses, in photography, stereoscopic motion pictures, vehicle lighting, and display lighting.
Abstract: With the development of practical polarizing sheets, polarized light, long known and employed by science, is being given increasingly wide use in engineering and industry. Its applications in the study of stresses, in photography, stereoscopic motion pictures, vehicle lighting, and display lighting, are among those mentioned by this author, who reviews polarized light for the engineer.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors extended Cottrell and Bilby's theory of locking of dislocations and found that the maximum interaction energy is about 0.75 eV and the saturation concentration near the dislocation about 6 atomic per cent.

TL;DR: In this article, a defect model for the grain-boundary barrier has been proposed to explain the phenomena of voltage instability/stability of the ZnO varistor, which is the key element of the proposed model is the zinc interstitials which are present in the depletion layer as excess zinc, arising from the non-stoichiometric nature of zinc.
Abstract: A defect model for the grain-boundary barrier has been proposed to explain the phenomena of voltage instability/stability of the ZnO varistor. The key element of the proposed model is the zinc interstitials which are present in the depletion layer as excess zinc, arising from the non-stoichiometric nature of ZnO. Both instability and stability have been described in terms of diffusion of these interstitials in the depletion layer, followed by chemical interactions with defects at the grain-boundary interface. Finally, a large body of experimental data is presented to indirectly validate the proposed defect model.

TL;DR: In this article, a fracture mechanics approach was used to study high-temperature creep crack propagation, and crack growth rates were correlated with the C*-parameter which is an energy rate line integral.
Abstract: A fracture mechanics approach was used to study high-temperature creep crack propagation. Crack growth rates were correlated with the C*-parameter which is an energy rate line integral. For materials conforming to a nonlinear stress and strain rate relationship in the steady-state creep range, specifically, those which can be properly idealized as purely viscous (negligible elastic and transient creep effects), C* characterizes the crack tip stress and strain rate fields. Crack growth rate tests were conducted in the creep range on a discaloy superalloy at 1200°F (920 K). Two specimen geometries were tested, a center cracked panel and a compact geometry, to establish the geometry independence of this approach. The results showed that crack growth rate correlated with the C*-integral, while other parameters (K and nominal stress) failed to adequately characterize crack growth rate.
