Abstract: A gas turbine cycle that utilizes the vaporization of liquefied natural gas as a source of inlet air chilling for a gas turbine. The cycle uses regeneration for preheating of combustor air and offers the potential of gas turbine cycle efficiencies in excess of 60%. The systems and methods permit the vaporization of LNG using ambient air, with the resulting super cooled air being easier to compress and/or having fewer contaminants therein. As the air is easier to compress, less energy is needed to operate the compressor, thereby increasing the efficiency of the system. A portion of the vaporized natural gas may be used as the combustion fuel for the gas turbine system, thereby permitting multiple turbines to be operated using a single topping cycle. In alternative embodiments, the vaporization of the LNG may be used as part of a bottoming cycle to increase the efficiencies of the gas turbine system.

All these attributes are possible because the use of electromagnetic induction permits the pan to be heated directly without heating the range surface first.

Abstract: Particle segregation data at low gas velocity, near the minimum fluidizing velocity, are presented for particles of different size (150 to 2800 μm) and density (720 to 2800 kg/m3) in a fluidized bed. Phase diagrams similar to those of liquid-solid systems are developed to present the results. The data were collected in a 100 mm diameter unit operating at pressures up to 660 kPa and a 114 mm diameter unit at atmospheric pressure. The particle segregation data were obtained to provide design and operating criteria for a two-stage. i.e., an agglomerating combustor/gasifier and a devolatilizer/desulfurizer, fluidized bed coal gasification process to produce low heating-value gas (890-1350 K-cal/m3) for power generation. The data indicate that the criteria for particle separation can be achieved if the operating gas velocity is close to the minimum fluidizing velocity of the dense particles, that is, agglomerated ash, and spent dolomite. On presente des donnees sur la segregation, dans un lit fludise, de particules a une vitesse faible de gaz (voisine de la vitesse minimale de fluidisation); les particules avaient differentes dimensions (150 a 2,800 μm) et densites (720 a 2,800kg/m3). Pour presenter les resultats, on a mis an point des diagrammes de phases qui etaient semblables a ceux des systemes liquides-solides. On a recueilli les donnees dans une unite de 100 millimetres de diametre qui fonctionnait a des pressions s'elevant jusqu'a 660 kP (absolue) et dans une autre de 114 millimetres de diametre a la pression atmospherique. On a obtenu les donnees sur la segregation des particules pour determiner les criteres de conception et de foncionncment qui conviennent le mieux a un procede de gazeification du charbon en lit fluidise en deux etapes (combustion et gazeification ainsi que devolatisation et desulfuration pour produire un gaz faible valeur thermique (890 a 1350 k calories/m3) devant servir a la generation d'energie. Les donnees indiquent qu'on pent obtenir les criteres pour la separation des particules, si la vitesse du gaz est proche de la vitesse niinimale de fluidisation des particules denses, c'est-a-dire des cendres agglomerees et de la dolomite epuise.

Abstract: The chemistry of technetium in cement waste forms has been studied with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Using the Tc /f-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) as a probe of the technetium speciation, our results show that partial reduction of the pertechnetate ion, TcOj, takes place in the presence of the cement additive, blast fumace slag (BFS). The addition of the reducing agents FeS, NazS, and NaHjPOz produces more extensive reduction of TcOl, while the Compounds FeO, Fe304, and MnjOi are observed to be unreactive. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data for the BFS, Na^S, and FeS treated cements indicate the presence of Tc Clusters possessing first shell S coordination. For the Na2S and FeS additives, Tc-Tc interactions are detected in the EXAFS demonstrating an extended structure similar to that of TcSa. The EXAFS spectrum of the NaHzPOj treated cement reveals T c O and Tc-Tc interactions that resemble those found in the structure of TcO,.

Abstract: A vane for the turbine section of a gas turbine has an airfoil portion with leading edge, center and trailing edge portions. The leading edge portion is attached to the center portion by a dove tail joint that allows the leading edge portion to slide in the radial direction with respect to the center portion while preventing movement in the axial and circumferential directions, thereby eliminating thermal stresses created by differential thermal expansion between the leading edge portion and the remainder of the vane. An opening in the vane inner shroud that is normally sealed by a closure plate allows the leading edge portion to be readily replaced in the event of damage. The leading edge portion may be formed from a ceramic material and need not be supplied with cooling air.
