TL;DR: In this article, the transition temperature maxima for alloys formed between neigh boring elements in a given row of the periodic table are observed with valence numbers approximately equal to 4.7 and 6.4, respectively.
Abstract: The solid solution alloys formed by the incomplete dshell metals in groups 4, 5, 6, and 7 were tested for superconductivity down to 1 deg K. For alloys formed between neigh boring elements in a given row of the periodic table, two transition temperature maxima are observed with valence numbers approximately equal to 4.7 and 6.4, respectively, the only exception being the first long period, in which the upper maximum is absent. Similar maxima occur when the constituent elements are selected from different rows of the periodic table, thus confirming the dominant role of the d-shell electrons. It is known that the normal density-ofstates function, N(O), passes through a series of maxima as the d-shell is filled up, two of these peaks lying at about the same composition as the two transition temperature peaks observed in the present work. The relationship of T/sub c/ to N(O) for the transition metal alloys is discussed. Transition temperature data are also presented for alloys composed of neighboring elements in a given column of the periodic tabular. In this case, the form of the relationship between T/sub c/ and electronic or lattice properties is still obscure. (auth)

Abstract: Composite powders were hot-pressed to determine the phase relations in the Si/sub 3/N/sub 1/-SiO/sub 2/-Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ pseudoternary system. Four quaternary compounds, Si/sub 3/Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/N/sub 4/, YSiO/sub 2/N, Y/sub 10/Si/sub 7/O/sub 23/N/sub 4/, and Y/sub 4/Si/sub 2/O/sub 7/N/sub 2/, were identified. Studies of polyphase and single-phase materials in this system showed that these 4 compounds are unstable under oxidizing conditions. Materials within the Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/-Si/sub 2/N/sub 2/O-Y/sub 2/Si/sub 2/O/sub 7/ compatibility triangle precluded the unstable compounds, and are extremely resistant to oxidation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the installation of the world's first unified power flow controller (UPFC) has been completed and a series of commissioning tests were conducted at the Inez Substation of American Electric Power (AEP) in eastern Kentucky.
Abstract: The installation of the world's first unified power flow controller (UPFC) has been completed and a series of commissioning tests were conducted at the Inez Substation of American Electric Power (AEP) in eastern Kentucky. The project is a collaborative effort between AEP, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Comprising two /spl plusmn/160 MVA voltage-sourced GTO-thyristor-based inverters, this installation is the first large-scale practical demonstration of the UPFC concept, and its completion is a significant milestone in the progress of power electronics technology for flexible AC transmission system (FACTS). This paper briefly reviews the main features of the Inez installation and discusses the operation of the equipment. A collection of measured performance characteristics is presented to illustrate the unique capabilities of the UPFC. These dynamic measurements were made in the course of commissioning, and they graphically illustrate the ability of the UPFC to independently control the real and reactive power on a transmission line, while also regulating the local bus voltage. The results include a demonstration of the series inverter at Inez, operating in stand-alone mode. This test constitutes the first practical large-scale demonstration of the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) concept.

TL;DR: In this paper, the J-line integral was used to extract the magnitude of crack tip stress intensity factors from finite element solutions for thermal stress crack problems, and the properties of the J line integral in the presence of thermal stresses were determined.
Abstract: Methods of using the J-line integral to extract the magnitude of crack tip stress intensity factors from finite element solutions for thermal stress crack problems are presented. The properties of the J-line integral in the presence of thermal stresses are determined. From these properties a procedure for calculating crack tip stress intensity factors is developed. Also a superposition method involving crack surface tractions is presented for thermal stress crack problems. In this procedure the J-line integral path must include segments of the crack surface. All methods developed are illustrated by numerical examples.
