TL;DR: It is argued that the design of intelligent systems should be based on the notion of a joint cognitive system architecture: computational technology should be used to aid the user in the process of solving his problem.
Abstract: In this paper we report the results of a study of technicians diagnosing faults in electro-mechanical equipment with the aid of an expert system. Technicians varying in level of experience and interactive style (active or passive) diagnosed faults varying in level of difficulty. The results indicate that the standard approach to expert system design, in which the user is assigned the role of data gatherer for the machine, is inadequate. Problem solving was marked by novel situations outside the machine's conpetence, special conditions, underspecified instructions, and error recovery, all of which required substantial knowledge and active participation on the part of technicians. We argue that the design of intelligent systems should be based on the notion of a joint cognitive system architecture: computational technology should be used to aid the user in the process of solving his problem. The human's role is to achieve total system performance as a manager of knowledge resources that can vary in kind and amount of “intelligence” or power.

13 Apr 1983TL;DR: In this paper, a regenerator for detecting, remodulation, and retransmission of a digital data signal propagated in the differential mode over a pair of bundle conductors (12,16) of a power line is described.
Abstract: A regenerator (10) for providing detection, remodulation, and retransmission of a digital data signal (20) propagated in the differential mode over a pair of bundle conductors (12,16) of a power line. The electric power signal, propagated in the common mode over the same bundle conductors, is conducted through the regenerator and provides a power supply voltage (V.) for the regenerator electronics. A series of electrical traps (38, 40, 42, 44) prevent the electric power signal from being conducted into that portion of the regenerator utilized for processing of the data signal. The regenerator also includes bypass switches for bypassing the regenerator electronics when a power supply voltage sufficient to operate the electronics is unavailable.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple theory is developed which predicts the transmissivity of such layers as a function of their sheet resistance and the wavelength of the radiation, and experimental data over the 2.5-20 µm wavelength and 5-500 Ω/square sheet resistance range are given for both diffused and ion-implanted layers and also for polysilicon gases.
Abstract: Free carrier absorption in heavily doped layers reduces the useful photon flux in the photoconductive region of extrinsic Si infrared detectors. A simple theory is developed which predicts the transmissivity of such layers as a function of their sheet resistance and the wavelength of the radiation. Experimental data over the 2.5-20 µm wavelength and 5-500 Ω/square sheet resistance range are given for both diffused and ion-implanted layers and also for polysilicon gases. The temperature dependence of both transmissivity and sheet resistance is investigated from 20 to 300 K.

TL;DR: In this paper, the total spectral absorptivities of plasmas of sulfur hexafluoride for wavelengths of 100 to 15,500 A were derived for both line and continuum radiation.
Abstract: Calculations are made of the total spectral absorptivities of plasmas of sulfur hexafluoride for wavelengths of 100 to 15,500 A. Both line and continuum radiation are considered. For the contributions from line radiation, we have calculated the strengths, widths and shifts of both neutral, singly and doubly ionized atoms of S and F , except that we used experimental line strengths where they are available. The theory used was that of Griem, which assumes LS coupling. Curves are given for the emission coefficient of radiation appropriate to the arc center for isothermal cylindrical plasmas of various radii for pressures of 1 and 10 atm and temperatures from 5000 to 35,000°K. It is found that at 1 atm line radiation can be an order of magnitude higher than continuum radiation and radiation >2000 A is less than 10% of the total radiation for temperatures greater than 15,000°K. Predictions are given of volt-ampere characteristics and central temperatures for arcs of various radii in SF 6 at pressures at 1 and 10 atm.
