TL;DR: In this paper, the Mossbauer spectra of the three face-centered cubic arrangement of iron atoms with nitrogen at the body-center position were measured with a stainless steel source.
Abstract: M\"ossbauer measurements of ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{57}$ were made on ferromagnetic ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}$N, which has a face-centered cubic arrangement of iron atoms with nitrogen at the body-center position. The hyperfine fields are 345 koe for the corner Fe and 215 koe for the three face-center Fe, approximately proportional to their magnetic moments, $3{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$ and $2{\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$. The isomer shifts, measured against a stainless steel source, are 0.30 mm/sec for the corner Fe and 0.45 mm/sec for the face-center Fe. These values are in line with their proposed electronic configurations of $3{d}^{7}4s$ and $3{d}^{8}4s$, which are derived on the assumption that the nitrogen at the body-center position acts as an electron "donor" to the face-center Fe. The M\"ossbauer spectra of (${\mathrm{Fe}}_{3.6}$,${\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.4}$)N and (${\mathrm{Fe}}_{3}$Ni)N are consistent with their ordered structures in which Ni replaces the corner Fe preferentially.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple exciter scheme based on using a static reactive power generator implemented with fixed capacitors and thyristor controlled inductors is proposed. But the feasibility of the proposed scheme with naturally commutated thyristors is verified by measurements on a test setup employing a standard 15-hp induction motor.
Abstract: The utilization of the squirrel cage induction motor as an autonomous induction generator is briefly reviewed. In view of potential new applications, the discussion focuses on a simple exciter scheme based on using a static reactive power generator implemented with fixed capacitors and thyristor controlled inductors. The feasibility of the proposed scheme with naturally commutated thyristors is verified by measurements on a test setup employing a standard 15-hp induction motor.

TL;DR: The inapplicability of traditional university-based training has become a chronic complaint in organizations which must prepare large numbers of persons for service overseas as mentioned in this paper. But these complaints are not directed toward the content of the traditional academic disciplines that bear on overseas work.
Abstract: The inapplicability of traditional university-based training has become a chronic complaint in organizations which must prepare large numbers of persons for service overseas. In the Peace Corps, for example, which in almost seven years now has trained more persons for overseas work than any other civilian government agency, complaints about the irrelevance of traditional classroom training have been growing steadily since the first Volunteers entered training. (The Peace Corps continues to train most of its Volunteers at universities, for a variety of reasons not having to do with the quality of training; but a vigorous effort is made to influence the training institutions to design programs that differ sharply from the standard curriculum design.)The complaints are not directed toward the content of the traditional academic disciplines that bear on overseas work. The content can be relevant to performance in an alien culture; moreover, the acknowledged experts in the subject matter fields appropriate to ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a railway navigation system which provides information defining the position of a railway vehicle on a track system using an on-board computer with a track database representing the locations of the rail lines, including locations of curves and switches.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for a railway navigation system which provides information defining the position of a railway vehicle on a track system. The system uses an on-board computer with a track database representing the locations of the rail lines, including locations of curves and switches. The system uses a turn rate indicator and a speedometer means to obtain a value for the curvature of the track on which the railway vehicle moves. Curvature data so obtained is compared with data in the track database to determine the position of the railway vehicle in relation to curves and switches of the track system.

TL;DR: In this article, a ceramic composition for insulating components, made of ceramic matrix composites, of gas turbines is provided, which comprises a plurality of hollow oxide-based spheres of various dimensions, a phosphate binder, and at least one oxide filler powder, whereby the binder partially fills gaps between the spheres and the filler powders.
Abstract: A ceramic composition for insulating components, made of ceramic matrix composites, of gas turbines is provided. The composition comprises a plurality of hollow oxide-based spheres of various dimensions, a phosphate binder, and at least one oxide filler powder, whereby the phosphate binder partially fills gaps between the spheres and the filler powders. The spheres are situated in the phosphate binder and the filler powders such that each sphere is in contact with at least one other sphere and the arrangement of spheres is such that the composition is dimensionally stable and chemically stable at a temperature of approximately 1600 °C. A stationary vane of a gas turbine comprising the composition of the present invention bonded to the outer surface of the vane is provided. A combustor comprising the composition bonded to the inner surface of the combustor is provided. A transition duct comprising the insulating coating bonded to the inner surface of the transition is provided. Because of abradable properties of the composition, a gas turbine blade tip seal comprising the composition also is provided. The composition is bonded to the inside surface of a shroud so that a blade tip carves grooves in the composition so as to create a customized seal for the turbine blade tip.
