TL;DR: The results of this study support the position that grandparents remain a significant factor in the lives of young adults.
Abstract: While studies have considered the importance of the grandparent and grandchild relationship from the perspective of the former, the present study explores the perspective of young adult grandchildren concerning this relationship. Four relationship variables are examined: 1) the amount of contact; b) the assessed adequacy of contact; 3) the importance of the relationship; and 4) the role conception. The results of this study support the position that grandparents remain a significant factor in the lives of young adults.

TL;DR: Ovulated and hormonal changes during the estrous cycle are discussed in relation to the probable sources of estradiol-17 beta and progesterone, the control of the alternating pattern of ovulation and oviposition, and the role of steroid hormones in female sexual receptivity in this species.
Abstract: The lizard Anolis carolinensis ovulates a single egg alternately from each ovary every 14 days. The ovulated egg enters the ipsilateral oviduct, acquires a shell, and is oviposited 18 or 19 days later. Thus, there is only a single egg in one of the oviducts (one-egg condition) during most of the estrous cycle, but there is a 4-5 day period when a mature, shelled egg is in one oviduct while a recently ovulated egg is in the contralateral oviduct (two-egg condition). Analysis of ovarian follicular diameters indicates that the largest follicle in a single ovary exhibits a growth spurt about halfway through its 28-day vitellogenic growth phase. The corpus luteum, once formed from the ovulated follicle, exhibits a linear decrease in weight, becoming fully regressed just before oviposition of the egg in the ipsilateral oviduct. Plasma concentrations of estradiol-17 beta and progesterone are high in two-egg animals. After oviposition, plasma concentrations of progesterone are still high in one-egg animals whereas those of estradiol-17 beta are much lower. These ovarian and hormonal changes during the estrous cycle are discussed in relation to the probable sources of estradiol-17 beta and progesterone, the control of the alternating pattern of ovulation and oviposition, and the role of steroid hormones in female sexual receptivity in this species.

TL;DR: It is shown that males showed significantly higher self-esteem and ego strength scores, and significantly lower death anxiety scores than did females.
Abstract: The interrelationships of ego strength (Barron Ego Strength Scale), death anxiety (Death Anxiety Scale), and self-esteem (Texas Social Behavior Inventory) were studied in undergraduate university males (n = 20) and females (n = 59). Significant negative relationships between death anxiety and self-esteem and ego strength, and a significant positive relationship between self-esteem and ego strength were shown by both males and females. Moreover, males showed significantly higher self-esteem and ego strength scores, and significantly lower death anxiety scores than did females.

TL;DR: In this article, an analysis was conducted to determine the grammatical and semantic means by which children achieve textual coherence, in narratives in particular and discourse in general, with particular attention given to noun phrases (NPs) which were introduced and reiterated at least once in subsequent story clauses.
Abstract: An analysis was undertaken to determine the grammatical and semantic means by which children achieve textual coherence, in narratives in particular and discourse in general. Twenty-one stories from twelve children aged two to five were analysed, with particular attention given to noun phrases (NPs) which were introduced and reiterated at least once in subsequent story clauses. In recognition of the agent-oriented nature of narrative and its sense of the succession of events, children introduced and reiterated primarily + animate NPs in their stories, expressing them predominantly as agents. With respect to discourse coherence in general, most reiterated NPs appeared in subject position both with introduction and subsequent mention, suggesting they were elements of focus. The given-new distinction was well preserved, too. Though at age five stories became considerably longer and denser with reiterated NPs, features of textual coherence held for all the age groups considered.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the performance levels and promotion experiences of 371 faculty members under three different market conditions reflecting the supply and demand for university faculty (buyer's market, seller's market and stable market).
Abstract: This paper contrasts the performance levels and promotion experiences of 371 faculty members under three different market conditions reflecting the supply and demand for university faculty (buyer's market, seller's market, and stable market). The central questions examined are, What is the effect of market conditions upon (1) the length of time it takes for promotion; (2) the promotion rate; (3) the productivity of assistant and associate professors before each promotion; and (4) the productivity of full professors after attaining that rank? Findings are most consistent with a market model indicating that faculty promoted during a buyer's market remain in rank longer before being promoted and exhibit a greater rate of productivity than faculty promoted during other market conditions. There is also support for the elite model in that the impact of “tight” market conditions on productivity is greatest for faculty below the rank of full professor.

TL;DR: Fear of crime both in the relative danger of walking in the neighborhood and in the safety of one's home was examined, and age was found to be positively associated with fear of crime in the former situation, but slightly negatively associated in the latter.
Abstract: It is commonly accepted that there is a positive relationship between age and the fear of crime, although there is some indication that this may not hold under all conditions. Most studies concerning fear of crime have been based upon questions involving fear of walking alone within one's neighborhood. This study examined fear of crime both in the relative danger of walking in the neighborhood and in the safety of one's home. Age was found to be positively associated with fear of crime in the former situation, but slightly negatively associated in the latter. It was suggested that the aged may only be more fearful of crime in particularly dangerous situations, and that there is a need for fear of crime measures with greater content validity.

TL;DR: The scalability and dimensionality of the Community Satisfaction Scale were re-examined for a second sample (N = 412) drawn from a British new town after an interval of eight years.
Abstract: Summary The scalability and dimensionality of the Community Satisfaction Scale were re-examined for a second sample (N = 412) drawn from a British new town after an interval of eight years. The results suggest that both the domain and structure of community satisfaction were malleable and subject to change within a given population, not just between populations. They also provide continued support for the sociocultural approach to human-environment interaction.

Abstract: A new method is described for calibrating a five-hole probe for extending the useful measurement range up to flow angularities of 85°. The calibration method involves adjustment of the calibration coefficients to allow valid calibration at larger flow angles. The extended range calibration curves for flow angularity, total and static pressures are presented. The present range is valid in pitch only when the yaw ports are nulled.

TL;DR: Recommendations are made which should be useful to professional associations seeking to attract new members and keep their present ones for nurses joining and remaining in professional nursing associations.
Abstract: In this article factors such as education, employment characteristics, and association benefits which are associated with nurses joining and remaining in professional nursing associations are identified. The impact of these factors on association membership was determined through a survey of 225 nurses in one midwestern state. On the basis of these empirical results recommendations are made which should be useful to professional associations seeking to attract new members and keep their present ones.

Abstract: Linear shift-invariant discrete-time systems satisfying the two time scale property-are considered. Conditions for a complete separation of slow and fast subsystems are given. Subsystem regulator problems are investigated and the controllability property of the system is established based on the subsystem controllability properties. A subsystem controller design method is proposed depending on the separability of the slow and fast controls.

TL;DR: The results indicate that Asp Q-tRNA is a more effective substrate than the Asp G-t RNA, and reasons for observing the lack of a G-to-Q modification in cancer tRNAs by others are hypothesized.
Abstract: Can a queuine-specific tRNA function normally without replacement of G by Q in its structure? To answer this, kinetics of aspartate queuine-containing tRNA (Q-tRNA) is compared with its queuine-deficient counterpart (G-tRNA). The results indicate that Asp Q-tRNA is a more effective substrate than the Asp G-tRNA. The Asp Q-tRNA exhibits a higher reaction velocity (Vmax greater than 30%) and a higher reaction rate (Km less than 55%) than its counterpart. The Asp tRNAs derived from human tumor lines and grown in athymic mice contain a full complement of queuine. This tumor tRNA exhibits aminoacylation kinetics similar to a normal liver tRNA. Reasons for observing the lack of a G-to-Q modification in cancer tRNAs by others are hypothesized. Two purified Asp isoacceptors from liver are compared for the aminoacylation reaction; small differences are noted in the Vmax, but none in the Km values.

TL;DR: Modifications of these relationships by selective metabolic antagonists or by growth of hets on different preand post-plating carbon sources indicate that they reflect temperature-dependent properties of mitochondria which are peculiar to hets.
Abstract: Heterokaryons (hets) of Candida albicans constructed by fusing protoplasts of complementing auxotrophs produce heterogeneous clones on minimal medium consisting of (i) a minority of slow-growing hets, (ii) a preponderance of non-growing, parental-type auxotrophic monokaryons, and (iii) some prototrophic monokaryons bearing hybrid nuclei. Hets grown at a given temperature within the range 25 degrees C to 41 degrees C replate with higher efficiencies at any lower temperature and exhibit progressively declining plating efficiencies as plate temperatures increase beyond that at which they were initially grown. Neither auxotrophic nor prototrophic monokaryons show such responses. Growth of colonies produced by hets, wild-type strains or prototrophic hybrid monokaryons is stimulated by temperatures in the order, 37 degrees C greater than 30 degrees C greater than 41 degrees C greater than 25 degrees C. However, the proportion of hets to auxotrophic monokaryons within individual het clones increases directly from 25 degrees C to 41 degrees C. Though this pattern obtains whether colonies are compared at equivalent sizes or ages, het frequencies decline as colonies age at all temperatures. Appearance of hybrid monokaryons within het clones is unaffected by growth temperature. The relationships of temperatures to plating efficiencies and stabilities of hets are independent of the natures of their complementing auxotrophies or the wild-type backgrounds of their nuclear components and are, therefore, functions of heterokaryosis per se. Modifications of these relationships by selective metabolic antagonists or by growth of hets on different pre- and post-plating carbon sources indicate that they reflect temperature-dependent properties of mitochondria which are peculiar to hets.

TL;DR: Two computer simulation programs have been developed for use as instructional aids for preparation of special education teachers to assist teachers of the mildly handicapped in selecting precise, data-based solutions to classroom learning and problems.
Abstract: Two computer simulation programs have been developed for use as instructional aids for preparation of special education teachers. The first set of simulations was designed to assist teachers of the mildly handicapped in selecting precise, data-based solutions to classroom learning and beha viorproblems. Particular emphasis was placed upon cueing teachers to select optimal strategies to enhance teacher consultation between special and regular educators. Optimal strategies were determined by conducting a validation study wherein experts rank-ordered four possible solutions for each of several simulation situations. In evaluations given to 36 subjects before and after the computer simulation program, there were significant differences (p < .05), with posttest selections to be more nearly like the strategy selection of trained, experienced consulting teachers. The second set of simulations was designed to prepare teachers to use direct, curricular-based assessments to determine pupil performance and to evalua...

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the structure of transfer RNAs: listing of 150 additional sequences The structure of various tRNAs can be organized in a manner to yield common nucleotide “positions” in the cloverleaf structure of the most tRNAs To achieve this, “subpositions” of residues 17 (17: 1, 17 : 2) and 20 (20 : 1, 20 : 2, 20 : 3) in the dihydrouridine loop and residue 47 (47 : 1, 47 : 2, etc) in the variable loop are introduced Using this numbering scheme, each tRNA yields a structure with common “invariable” or “conserved” nucleotide positions The chapter discusses in addition to “sub positions,” “invariable” (A, C, G, or U), and “semi conserved” (R, which is A or G; Y, which is C or U; G or C) positions found in most tRNA sequences tRNA sequences have been grouped according to their origins (sequences published in the earlier listing are indicated by sequence code numbers in italics) An Arabic number in parentheses after the sequence code indicates the number of different organisms having that common tRNA structure as referred to by the sequence code

TL;DR: Quantitative analysis of the actions involved in feeding showed that overall feeding behaviors of lab-reared and field-caught mice resembled one another but that the sequence of specific actions was variable and much of the stereotypy of the mouse's feeding response resulted from the position and alignment of the cues that orient the feeding response.
Abstract: and Summary This study examined the stimulus control of feeding in the carnivorous grasshopper mouse, Onychomys leucogaster. Quantitative analysis of the actions involved in feeding showed that overall feeding behaviors of lab-reared and field-caught mice resembled one another but that the sequence of specific actions was variable. Responses by mice to cotton swabs dipped in solutions showed that after eating several crickets, the presence of prey odor more readily elicited a feeding response. The odor and moisture cues associated with exposed viscera were shown by the use of modified prey to strongly affect the orientation of feeding. Using modified prey without exposed viscera, tactile cues associated with the head and thorax proved to be important guides in the feeding response. Feeding orientation towards the head was independent of that towards the thorax. Together these data showed that the feeding sequence resembled a reaction chain and that much of the stereotypy of the mouse's feeding response resulted from the position and alignment of the cues that orient the feeding response.

TL;DR: Porcine liver β-D-glucose dehydrogenase has been isolated using Triton X-114 to release it from the endoplasmic reticulum using a steady state kinetic analysis at 37°C.
Abstract: Porcine liver beta-D-glucose dehydrogenase has been isolated using Triton X-114 to release it from the endoplasmic reticulum. The purified enzyme contains a limited amount (1.7%) of lipid material, including cholesterol, fatty acids, mono and diglycerides, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and cholesterol esters. This enzyme is a tetrameric protein containing an extensive number of hydrophobic residues. This form of glucose dehydrogenase is capable of turning over both beta-D-glucose and alpha-D-glucose-6-phosphate in vivo as indicated from a steady state kinetic analysis at 37 degrees C.
