TL;DR: Morphological differences in luteal and oviductal structure were examined and the evolution of viviparity and placentation are discussed.
Abstract: Sceloporus aeneus exhibits reproductive bimodality. That is, one taxon (Sceloporus aeneus bicanthalis) is viviparous whereas the other (Sceloporus aeneus aeneus) is oviparous. Morphological differences in luteal and oviductal structure were examined. Oviparous and viviparous females have distinct corpora lutea that form immediately after ovulation and remain active until just prior to oviposition or parturition. Luteal activity is correlated positively with follicular atresia. The oviduct of both subspecies is divided into three distinct morphological regions: an anterior infundibulum, a median uterus, and a posterior vagina. The infundibulum and vagina of females exhibiting either parity type are similar, whereas distinct differences in utering morphology are apparent. Primarily, these differences include the loss of uterine glands and a reduction in epithelial cell height in the viviparous form. Moreover, viviparous females possess a simple but well-developed chorioallantoic placenta and a simple choriovitelline placenta. Chorioallantoic placentation is associated with a significant increase in uterine vascularity, indicating a role in gas and/or water exchange. The evolution of viviparity and placentation are discussed in relation to these observations.

TL;DR: This paper found that high voter turnout in presidential primaries is associated with states with high median levels of education, lenient legal restrictions on voting, and a history of competitive two-party elections.
Abstract: Decades of individual and aggregate level research suggest that three sets of factors influence voter turnout: the socioeconomic makeup of the potential voter; legal restrictions on voting; and the political context of each election. In this brief study, we use state-level data to test whether these factors combine to account for variations in turnout rates in the electoral arena of presidential primaries. As expected, high turnout is associated with states which have high median levels of education, lenient legal restrictions on voting, and a history of competitive two-party elections. Also congruent with our expectations, but at odds with research of other electoral arenas, high turnout in presidential primaries is unrelated to high campaign spending or close elections. We contend that spending in presidential primaries may be simply too low to stimulate turnout and that close primaries do not enhance turnout because voters are often unaware that the pending election will be close.

Abstract: This paper empirically assesses the extent to which power in a marketing channel dyad is issue-specific or pervasive. Additionally, the paper investigates the extent to which specific power sources effect single or multiple areas of power. The dyad studied is the wholesaler-food broker interface in the marketing channel for grocery products. Results indicate that power is limited in scope, being more issue-specific than pervasive. Additionally, some specific sources of power were found to create power in multiple areas, while others created power in but one area.

TL;DR: The overall pattern of osteological variation in these samples can be summarized parsimoniously by paraphrasing the first law of geography: All of the terminal Late Archaic populations of Ohio were related to each other, but closer ones were more related than distant ones.
Abstract: Cranial and mandibular discrete traits and cranial metric traits were collected from 99-125 individuals in eight terminal Late Archaic sites. The analysis of ten metric traits in six samples showed that the samples shared the same generalized variance and that sexual dimorphism in the means of the metric traits was greater than inter-site differences. Since these samples share the same size and shape expression of a complex set of polygenic traits, we hypothesize a historical relationship among these samples. Discrete trait analysis showed a pattern of differentiation among the eight samples. This pattern of differentiation is related directly to the geographical separation between samples, and, as with metric traits, cultural differences do not contribute to the pattern of biological differences. The overall pattern of osteological variation in these samples can be summarized parsimoniously by paraphrasing the first law of geography: All of the terminal Late Archaic populations of Ohio were related to each other, but closer ones were more related than distant ones.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of side-sliding on the performance and stability of a double-delta wing and wing body configuration were determined experimentally, and the wake surveys showed that a narrow band at the edge of the vortex sheet has a very steep total pressure gradient present in all configurations.
Abstract: The effects of sideslip on the performance and stability of a double-delta wing and wing-body configuration were determined experimentally. The wake total pressure reveals the vortex size, location, and shape. Sideslip angle resulted in a decreased stall angle of attack, lower C/IV1AX, enhancement of post-stall lift recovery, increased upwind vortex sheet si/e, and decreased downwind vortex size. Adding the body to the wing increased the levels of adverse rolling and yawing moments at the stall. The wake surveys show that a narrow band at the edge of the vortex sheet has a very steep total pressure gradient present in all configurations. A b c() c c,, s 3

TL;DR: This paper analyzed qualitative questionnaire data on readers' perceptions and reconstructions of the events and ideologies presented in newspaper texts and developed a sociolinguistic and interactional perspective on the media/audience relationship.
Abstract: Building on the work of Trew and his associates, this essay analyzes qualitative questionnaire data on readers' perceptions and reconstructions of the events and ideologies presented in newspaper texts. The results bear directly on the interaction between the ideology “embedded” in texts and the readers who encounter those texts. A sociolinguistic and interactional perspective on the media/audience relationship is therefore developed.

TL;DR: Electo-Magnetic Impulse De-icing (EIDI) as mentioned in this paper is a de-icing technique that uses high voltage capacitors to charge a wire coil rigidly supported just inside the aircraft skin.
Abstract: De-icing of aircraft by using the electro-magnetic impulse phenomenon was proposed and demonstrated in several European countries. However, it is not available as a developed system due to lack of research on the basic physical mechanisms and necessary design parameters. The de-icing is accomplished by rapidly discharging high voltage capacitors into a wire coil rigidly supported just inside the aircraft skin. Induced eddy currents in the skin create a repulsive force resulting in a hammer-like force which cracks, de-bonds, and expels ice on the skin surface. The promised advantages are very low energy, high reliability of de-icing, and low maintenance. Three years of Electo-Impulse De-icing (EIDI) research is summarized and the analytical studies and results of testing done in the laboratory, in the NASA Icing Research Tunnel, and in flight are presented. If properly designed, EIDI was demonstrated to be an effective and practical ice protection system for small aircraft, turbojet engine inlets, elements of transport aircraft, and shows promise for use on helicopter rotor blades. Included are practical techniques of fabrication of impulse coils and their mountings. The use of EIDI with nonmetallic surface materials is also described.

TL;DR: The identification of the remains of the most widely sought Nazi war criminal still at large, Josef Mengele, was completed by a team of authorized international forensic experts, including the governments of West Germany and United States, as well as the Simon Wiesenthal Center of Los Angeles as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: In recent weeks, world attention has been focused on the identification of skeletal remains suspected of being those of the most widely sought Nazi war criminal still at large--Josef Mengele. Several important turns in the investigation of his whereabouts led to a small city south of Sao Paulo, where he had been living until 1979. Mengele was reported to have drowned and to have been buried in a country cemetery near his last residence. The initial processing of the remains was done at the Medicolegal Institute of Sao Paulo by police officials in consultation with anthropologists and dentists as well as Dr. Wilmes Teixeira of Mogi das Cruzes, a suburb of Sao Paulo. Dr. Teixeira coordinated the team of authorized international forensic experts officially representing the governments of West Germany and the United States, as well as the Simon Wiesenthal Center of Los Angeles, who joined Brazilian scientists in completing identification. The success of the investigation was due to complete cooperation among members of the team, resulting in verification, within a reasonable scientific certainty, that these were the remains of Josef Mengele.

Abstract: A brief review is given of four earlier tests in the NASA Lewis Icing Research Tunnel and of flight tests in NASA's Icing Research Aircraft and in a Cessna 206 airplane. Details are given of recent icing tunnel tests of thicker-skinned wings, a Gates Learjet, a composite leading edge, and a Boeing 767, and of a Falcon Fanjet engine inlet. These were tested at speeds from 87 to 220 knots, air temperatures from -2 to -15 C, LWC values of 0.6 to 2.4 grams/cu meter, and median droplet diameters from 12 to 20 microns. Energy requirements are reported, as well as conclusions from comparisons of several Electro-Impulse De-Icing coil system designs. Fundamental studies of the structural dynamics and ice shedding of a 12.7 cm (5 inch) diameter semicylinder are described. Some potential problem areas are discussed: fatigue of skin and coil mountings, system weight and cost, electro-magnetic interference and noise.

TL;DR: The authors investigated the relationship between partisanship and interparty competition in the American states and found that the two are different measures which are related systematically and that changes in aggregate demographic variables account very well for states' movement along the Ranney index over the last 3 decades.
Abstract: Students of state politics have long been interested in the partisanship and the degree of interparty competition in the American states This has led to numerous attempts to quantify state-level partisanship and competition, the most significant by Ranney (1965) Interestingly, however, scholars have never specified clearly the relationship between these two concepts as measured by the Ranney index This research attempts to do just that and reveals that the two are different measures which are related systematically More important, understanding changes in a state's partisanship is determined to be crucial to understanding changes in its level of two-party competition As such, in order to explain changes in partisanship and competition across the American states from the 1950s to the 1970s, we focus on accounting for changes in partisanship To this end, changes in aggregate demographic variables account very well for states' movement along the Ranney index over the last 3 decades

TL;DR: Our own problems in teaching writing have recurrently presented themselves in forms that nineteenth-century teachers easily would have recognized as mentioned in this paper, and we also dwell within a "reform tradition" that stresses the importance of students' interests and experience and continues to see the writing task as based on what used to be called synthetic insights and self-active learning.
Abstract: Commentary: English composition as we know it began in the early nineteenth century...but why is that important? Why would we care about poorly educated grammar school pedagogues—our distant colleagues!—fingers aching with cold as they parsed sentences, heard recitations, and fed the wood stove during those long wintery terms?Very simply, because their lives, practices, and less frequently, their writings give us back ourselves. Our own problems in teaching writing have recurrently presented themselves in forms that nineteenth-century teachers easily would have recognized.Like them, we sense the ongoing need for hard basics, the primitive core of our profession. Yet like those early teachers, we also dwell within a “reform tradition” that stresses the importance of students' interests and experience and continues to see the writing task as based on what used to be called “synthetic” insights and “self-active” learning. Inspired partly by romantic educational theories from the continent, this tradition gre...

TL;DR: In this paper, the extent and nature of natural laminar flow on a smoothed test region of a swept-wing business jet wing was measured using pressure belts and hot film anemometry and sublimating chemicals were used for transition detection.
Abstract: Flight test experiments were conducted to measure the extent and nature of natural laminar flow on a smoothed test region of a swept-wing business jet wing. Surface hot film anemometry and sublimating chemicals were used for transition detection. Surface pressure distributions were measured using pressure belts. Engine noise was monitored by a microphone attached to the wing surface to study possible acoustic effects on stability of the laminar boundary layer. Side-slip conditions were flown to simulate changes in effective wing sweep. Flight instrumentation and ground data analysis techniques and a method for measuring intermittency of turbulence are described. Correlation was obtained between the hot film gage signals and chemicals for transition detection. Cross-flow vortices were observed for some flight conditions. Results of spectral and statistical analysis of the hot film signals for various flight test conditions are presented.

Abstract: Scores on Form A of the Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBi) and the Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) were evaluated as a function of Type A +, A −, B −, and B + behavior pattern scores on the modified Jenkins Activity Survey for Health Predictions. Type A + and A− participants had significantly lower self-esteem (TSBI) scores, but significantly higher death anxiety (DAS) scores than did Type B− and B + participants. While gender differences did not exist with regard to TSBI scores, females had significantly higher DAS scores than did males.

TL;DR: The data suggest that juvenile gonads respond to gonadotropin although not in a typical adult manner, and a critical amount of lipid storage may be required for vitellogenesis and gonadal function.
Abstract: Juvenile lizards (Eumeces obsoletus) treated with FSH exhibited germ cell proliferation. However, only the first stages of oogenesis or spermatogenesis were elicited. No difference in spermatogenic stage was observed between treatment groups. Vitellogenesis was not observed in treated females although the primary (largest) follicles exhibited a granulosa composed of a single cell type indicative of a follicle just prior to yolking. In addition to gonadal effects, accessory structures which are steroid dependent exhibited changes. Oviductal weight increased significantly with FSH treatment. Histological examination revealed that both oviductal glands and oviductal epithelium increased in size as did epididymal cell heights in males. These structures are steroid dependent in adults. These data suggest that juvenile gonads respond to gonadotropin although not in a typical adult manner. Sexual maturation is not only dependent on gonadal responsiveness but on the maturation of the hypothalamohypophysial axis and thus, on gonadotropin secretion as well. In addition, a critical amount of lipid storage may be required for vitellogenesis and gonadal function.

TL;DR: A two-level pipeline architecture for computing H(a) with computation complexity reduced to c+a, where c is a constant, is described, which can lead to efficient VLSI implementation.
Abstract: The hypergeometric distribution is a widely used arithmetic function and is fundamental to many statistical sampling and statistical pattern recognition problems. Computation of the cumulative hypergeometric distribution function, H(a), is extremely time-consuming. As a result, many approximation algorithms have been proposed to evaluate the cumulative hypergeometric distribution. This paper describes a two-level pipeline architecture for computing H(a) with computation complexity reduced to c+a, where c is a constant. The main part of the design is a type of recurrence computation. A modular and systematic approach is suggested to implement the recurrence formula. The computation complexity of the proposed architecture is also compared with various other known methods. The highly regular structure of the design can lead to efficient VLSI implementation.
