TL;DR: For example, this paper found that women had significantly lower confidence in an investment task than men, after controlling for all other relevant variables and characteristics including the amount of the investment decision itself.
Abstract: We attempted to identify the personal characteristics that influence confidence in an investment decision in an experiment administered to 1,359 subjects nationwide. Multiple regression was used to control statistically for variation among subjects and to develop a model of investment decision confidence. The most striking finding was that women had significantly lower confidence in an investment task than men, after controlling for all other relevant variables and characteristics including the amount of the investment decision itself. Familiarity with and present attitude about investing in the stock market, college credit hours in accounting and finance, experience in evaluating common stocks, the current level of the stock market, and the investment decision itself (the amount to be invested) were also found to be significant. Age, value of personal portfolio, years of college, and years of business experience were not significant characteristics.

TL;DR: This paper examined the relationship between religiosity and alcohol use and perceived misuse and found that religiosity is clearly related to alcohol use, mainly because people's religion serves as a reference group influencing their behavior.
Abstract: This study examines the relationship between religiosity and alcohol use and perceived misuse. Unlike most past research, we focus on adults rather than adolescents and distinguish among specific Protestant denominations. We also use a more appropriate statistical technique and place the findings in a theoretical context. The analysis shows that religiosity is clearly related to alcohol use, mainly because people's religion serves as a reference group influencing their behavior. The analysis also shows that religiosity is not related to perceived misuse of alcohol, mainly because societal norms are congruent with religious norms and, hence, appear to overwhelm any effect of religion.

TL;DR: SWT and the HAQ disability instrument may be effective in the clinical assessment of fibromyalgia and work performance was strongly associated with pretest Stanford Health Assessment Disability Index (HAQ) scores, but also with pain, global severity, and psychologic status in both RA and Fibromyalgia groups.
Abstract: To assess functional ability in fibromyalgia patients, we examined 28 patients during the performance of five standardized work tasks (SWT), and compared their performance to 26 RA patients and 11 healthy community controls. Fibromyalgia patients performed 58.6% and RA patients 62.1% of the work done by normals. Work performance was strongly associated with pretest Stanford Health Assessment Disability Index (HAQ) scores (r = 0.705), but also with pain, global severity, and psychologic status in both RA and fibromyalgia groups. We also examined work status in 176 fibromyalgia patients. Sixty percent were employed, 9.6% considered themselves disabled, but only 6.2% received disability payments (none for the specific diagnosis of fibromyalgia). Thirty percent of patients had changed jobs because of this illness. Functional ability is impaired in Fibromyalgia. SWT and the HAQ disability instrument may be effective in the clinical assessment of fibromyalgia.

TL;DR: This paper used a logistic regression analysis to find that non-ascetic behaviors such as premarital sex and substance use, which are not consistently disapproved of in secular settings, are more likely than personal or property crimes to be affected by religiosity.
Abstract: Basing their ideas on the distinction between ascetic and secular ethical standards as originally suggested by Middleton and Putney (1962), Burkett and White (1974) claim that only where secular values are ambiguous in defining an activity as wrong is the effect of religiosity expected to have any salient impact on inhibiting deviance. That is, non-ascetic behaviors such as premarital sex and substance use, which are not consistently disapproved of in secular settings, are more likely than personal or property crimes to be affected by religiosity. This paper explores Burkett and White's (1974) ideas with survey data on self-reported delinquency and substance use from a sample of 3,065 male and female adolescents in grades seven through twelve in three midwestern states. The results, based on a logistic regression analysis, indicate that the deviance inhibiting impact of religiosity is more generalizeid than Burkett and White (1974) suggest.

TL;DR: The most difficult cases for law enforcement and medico-legal investigators to investigate are those in which victims have been deliberately burned to cover up a crime, or cremation has resulted from an accident or suicide as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Among the most difficult cases for law enforcement and medicolegal investigators to investigate are those in which victims have been deliberately burned to cover up a crime, or those in which cremation has resulted from an accident or suicide. This difficulty arises from the fact that the bodies may be destroyed or fragmented. The major objective in these investigations are twofold: The first task is to identify the body using every means available, including the aid of such experts as forensic pathologists, forensic anthropologists, dentists, toxicologists, and serologists as well as fire investigators, who can contribute to the investigation by providing information about the course of the fire.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that 1-min average wind speeds have high autocorrelations, with a value of about 0.9 with a lag of 32 min.
Abstract: On the Kansas plains, 1-min average wind speeds have high autocorrelations, with a value of about 0.9 with a lag of 32 min. In the winter, spring, and fall, 10 min average wind speed autocorrelation functions drop to 0 in 20 to 30 hr. Some cyclic behavior is noticed in the winter and fall correlations, with a period of several days. It is believed that this cyclic behavior is due to the passage of fronts. Only the summer season data showed a marked diurnal cycle. For short lag times up to about 30 min, the autocorrelation function of 1 min averaged wind machine output dropped more rapidly than that of wind speed. For longer lag times the 10 min averaged output autocorrelation was very similar to that of the wind speed. Wind speeds averaged for 1 min has a cross-correlation across a wind site which was a function of distance. The correlation dropped to about 0.83 at a distance of 21.7 km (13.5 mi). Wind machine output was less well correlated with a drop to about 0.69 at a spacing of 21.7 km. The autocorrelation function of a windfarm consisting of a large number of wind machines dropped much less rapidly than that of a single wind machine, as would be expected. A windfarm consisting of 100 MOD-2 wind machines with a spacing of 1.61 km by 0.80 km had a correlation of about 0.98 for a 10 min lag time when 1 min averaged output was considered. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a prototype expert system, which provides support to the process or quality engineer in the selection of the proper type of control charts to use in tracking the state of the process.
Abstract: The emergence of expert systems provides new insight to specialists in manufacturing as a means of solving problems in their domains. The solutions of most manufacturing problems are not deterministic and many alternate courses of action exist. In this paper, the structure of a prototype expert system, which provides support to the process or quality engineer in the selection of the proper type of control charts to use in tracking the state of the process, is explained. The functionality and operation procedures for executing this system are demonstrated on sample consultations and evolvement of the system in time to reinforce existing input knowledge bases is described.

TL;DR: The role played by legislator ideology in legislative voting has been examined in this article, where the authors show that what was masquerading as legislator ideology is actually, to a large degree, a measure of constituent interests.
Abstract: One of the issues raised in the economics literature on legislative voting is the role played by legislator ideology. Holding constituent interests constant, a finding of ideological impact is taken as evidence of shirking in a political principal-agent model. A problem in implementing such studies is how to measure both constituent interests and legislator ideology. Earlier studies have used a vector of socio-economic variables characterizing a legislator's district for the former. The latter has been measured by group ratings of liberal or conservative Congressional watchdogs, such as Americans for Democratic Action, and other indices based on voting records.1 Studies by Kalt (1980) and Peltzman (1984) have strongly suggested that what was masquerading as legislator ideology is actually, to a large degree, a measure of constituent interests. This was demonstrated by regressing group ratings on constituent variables. When Kalt and Zupan (1984), however, decomposed an ideology index into a constituent component and a legislator residual, they found that both had explanatory power in explaining United States Senate voting on anti-strip mine legislation. But it is not clear whether the legislative residual measured a Senator's ideology or was simply correlated with omitted constituent variables. Recent events in Kansas provide an opportunity to shed new light on the debate. In the November 1986 elections, Kansans voted on constitutional amendments, permitting liquor-by-the-drink, pari-mutuel wagering and a state-run lottery. Collectively, they came to be known as the 'Sin' issues, although they were generally supported on economic grounds. The amendments had earlier been approved by the Kansas legislature in separate roll call votes. Using con-

Abstract: This paper provides an introduction to the Johnson translation system of probability distributions, and it describes methods for using the Johnson system to model input processes in simulation experiments. The fitting methods based on available data are incorporated into the public-domain software package FITTR1. To handle situations in which little or no data is available, we present a visual interactive method for subjective distribution fitting that has been implemented in the public-domain software package VISIFIT. We present several examples illustrating the use of FITTR1 and VISIFIT for simulation input modeling.

TL;DR: A change in legal and arrest procedures was found to have the same effect on arrests of women as it had on those of men, suggesting that the changes did not produce differential treatment by police.
Abstract: Police records of arrests of women in Wichita, Kansas for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol for a 5-year period (1980-1984) were studied. The proportion of arrests of women increased from 10.6 to 14.5% of total arrested. Women in their 20s comprised the largest age group; single women were greatly overrepresented. More than one-half of the arrested women were employed outside the home; a substantial proportion (30.8%) were unemployed at the time of arrest. The average blood alcohol level of those tested was 183 mg/dl. Characteristics of arrestees are discussed in terms of changes in the social roles and expectations of women. Although time of arrest was similar to that of men (i.e., night), arrests of women were more evenly spread across the days of the week. Within the 5-year period, the rate of recidivism for DUI was 7.43%. The implications of arrest and recidivism patterns are discussed. A change in legal and arrest procedures was found to have the same effect on arrests of women as it had on those of men, suggesting that the changes did not produce differential treatment by police.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the geometric form of the free boundary Γ of an annular domain Ω, characterized by the Bernoulli condition that |∇U|=1 on Γ, where U is the capacity potential in Ω.
Abstract: In References 4 and 5, the author studied the geometric form of the free boundary Γ of an annular domain Ω, characterized by the Bernoulli condition that |∇U|=1 on Γ, where U is the capacity potential in Ω. It was shown, for example, that Γ has at most as many ν-extrema (for a given direction ν) or inflection points as the other boundary component Γ* of Ω, which is assumed given. Our purpose here is to extend the results in References 4 and 5 (wherever possible) to multiply connected regions for which some boundary components are given and others are free boundaries characterized by the Bernoulli condition. We present both positive results and counterexamples.

TL;DR: In this article, two approaches to the study of intergroup/interpersonal relations, in/outgroup categorization (motivational) and schema-confirmation (cognitive), are introduced.
Abstract: Two approaches to the study of intergroup/interpersonal relations, in/outgroup categorization (motivational) and schema-confirmation (cognitive), are introduced. These two concepts are integrated into a two-dimensional taxonomy, so that a stimulus person can appear as a schema-consistent or -inconsistent member of an in- or outgroup. It is hypothesized that the phenomena of ingroup favoritism/outgroup discrimination should be limited to schema-consistent actors. As the model includes a nonfamiliar outgroup level of analysis, it allows questions to be addressed pertaining to universality versus cultural specificity of person-perception phenomena. Two studies were conducted with Nigerian (Hausa and Ibo) and Canadian undergraduates participating as observers of videotaped Hausa and Ibo actors, cast in their ethnic schema-consistent (typical) roles and in schema-inconsistent (atypical) roles. Results from the Nigerian study gave modest support for the proposed model. As predicted, schema-consistent ingroup ac...

TL;DR: The traditional distinction that places studies of scientific discovery outside the philosophy of science, in psychology, sociology, or history, is no longer valid in view of the existence of computer systems of discovery.
Abstract: New computer systems of discovery create a research program for logic and philosophy of science. These systems consist of inference rules and control knowledge that guide the discovery process. Their paths of discovery are influenced by the available data and the discovery steps coincide with the justification of results. The discovery process can be described in terms of fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence such as heuristic search, and can also be interpreted in terms of logic. The traditional distinction that places studies of scientific discovery outside the philosophy of science, in psychology, sociology, or history, is no longer valid in view of the existence of computer systems of discovery. It becomes both reasonable and attractive to study the schemes of discovery in the same way as the criteria of justification were studied: empirically as facts, and logically as norms.

TL;DR: The tricyclic antidepressants amitriptyline, nortriptyiline, imipramine, and desipramines were quantified in two laboratories by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and enzyme-multiplied immunoassay (EMIT; Syva) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The tricyclic antidepressants amitriptyline, nortriptyline, imipramine, and desipramine in serum of patients taking one of the drugs were quantified in two laboratories by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and enzyme-multiplied immunoassay (EMIT; Syva). Results for split samples were highly correlated, but EMIT gave higher results in most cases, and the slopes of the correlation lines for each analyte were greater than 1. Detection limits for the two procedures were such that 18% of the EMIT results for the drug(s) were considered negative, as compared with 4% of the HPLC results. Additional assay of desmethyl or hydroxy antidepressant metabolites by HPLC did not explain the higher EMIT results. The relatively high detection limit for EMIT greatly limits its use in therapeutic drug monitoring, where low concentrations of tricyclic antidepressants are as important as high ones for dose adjustment or determination of compliance. Other problems with EMIT measurement of tricyclic antidepressants are discussed.

Abstract: Increasingly, therapists are encountering the needs of adult survivors of childhood sexual assault as the primary therapeutic issue, or as a part of some other presenting complaint. In this paper, a summary of the common emotional and relational dynamics is presented within a systemic framework. A five-step guided imagery model is offered as an effective method of intervening. Successful therapy impacts significantly on family-of-origin relationships and present coupleships, so cautions in using the imagery model are presented.

TL;DR: Concepts from Minuchin's structural family therapy and the “leaving home” concept of Haley are related to the problem and implications for service providers are discussed.
Abstract: Concern over the incidence of teenage pregnancy has led to efforts to explain reasons for teens putting themselves at risk for getting pregnant. Most explanations offered look at individual characteristics, focusing on self-esteem or related variables. Other explanations focus on cultural factors such as the availability of sex education or contraceptives. Family factors are recognized as contributing to teenage pregnancy, but specific variables have not been clearly demonstrated to be salient. This paper utilizes concepts from family systems theory to explain pregnancy in late adolescence as a family dysfunction. In particular, concepts from Minuchin's structural family therapy and the “leaving home” concept of Haley are related to the problem. An illustrative case is presented and implications for service providers are discussed.
