TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the mechanistic modeling approach for predicting cutting forces and simulating the milling process of fiber-reinforced polymers with a straight cutting edge.
Abstract: This work utilizes the mechanistic modeling approach for predicting cutting forces and simulating the milling process of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) with a straight cutting edge. Specific energy functions were developed by multiple regression analysis (MR) and committee neural network approximation (CN) of milling force data and a cutting model was developed based on these energies and the cutting geometry. It is shown that both MR and CN models are capable of predicting the cutting forces in milling of unidirectional and multidirectional composites. Model predictions were compared with experimental data and were found to be in good agreement over the entire range of fiber orientations from 0 to 180°. Furthermore, CN model predictions were found to greatly outperform MR model predictions.

TL;DR: The permissibility is investigated in this paper for the linear combination of two spatial or spatio-temporal covariance functions (or variograms) isotropic in space so that the authors obtain flexible classes of spatial-time covariance function with various properties such as long-range dependence and having different signs.
Abstract: The difference or a linear combination of two space-time covariance functions (or variograms) is not necessarily a valid covariance function (or variogram). In general, there seems no simple condition that makes a linear combination permissible, unless its coefficients are non-negative. The permissibility is investigated in this paper for the linear combination of two spatial or spatio-temporal covariance functions (or variograms) isotropic in space so that we obtain flexible classes of spatial or spatio-temporal covariance functions with various properties such as long-range dependence and having different signs.

01 Sep 2014TL;DR: This study compared the eye-tracking data of two SERP layouts (grid vs. list) with two types of tasks (informational vs. navigational) to observe differences in gaze patterns and indicated that users viewed the top left quadrants of the grid layout the most.
Abstract: Previous research has shown that users scan traditional text-based web pages using an “F-shaped” pattern. Evidence of this pattern exists because of the hierarchical structure of search engine result pages (SERP). With the recent implementation of Windows 8, search results are presented as a horizontal grid rather than a list. Due to the structural differences between the list and grid layouts, it is reasonable to postulate that users would exhibit dissimilar scanning patterns between layouts. This study compared the eye-tracking data of two SERP layouts (grid vs. list) with two types of tasks (informational vs. navigational) to observe differences in gaze patterns. Results indicated that users viewed the top left quadrants of the grid layout the most. However, there was little consensus as to how the results were ordered in the grid, unlike the list layout.

TL;DR: Combined electrochemical, electronic absorption, and computational investigations indicate the substantial electron deficiency of the compounds composed of fused pyrazine rings, which are expected to be good candidates as materials for organic thin film transistors.
Abstract: A series of edge-sharing condensed oligopyrazine analogues of acenes, the pyrazinacenes, were synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystallographic determinations revealed intermolecular interactions that affect the propensity of the molecules to undergo pi-pi stacking. Increasing heteroatom substitution of the acene framework induces shorter intermolecular pi-pi stacking distances (shorter than for graphite) probably due to lower van der Waals radius of nitrogen atoms. Hydrogen bonding is also a determining factor in the case of compounds containing reduced pyrazine rings. Combined electrochemical, electronic absorption, and computational investigations indicate the substantial electron deficiency of the compounds composed of fused pyrazine rings. The pyrazinacenes are expected to be good candidates as materials for organic thin film transistors.
