Abstract: Motivation: Most phylogenetic methods assume that the sequences of nucleotides or amino acids have evolved under stationary, reversible and homogeneous conditions. When these assumptions are violated by the data, there is an increased probability of errors in the phylogenetic estimates. Methods to examine aligned sequences for these violations are available, but they are rarely used, possibly because they are not widely known or because they are poorly understood. Results: We describe and compare the available tests for symmetry of k-dimensional contingency tables from homologous sequences, and develop two new tests to evaluate different aspects of the evolutionary processes. For any pair of sequences, we consider a partition of the test for symmetry into a test for marginal symmetry and a test for internal symmetry. The proposed tests can be used to identify appropriate models for estimation of evolutionary relationships under a Markovian model. Simulations under more or less complex evolutionary conditions were done to display the performance of the tests. Finally, the tests were applied to an alignment of small-subunit ribosomal RNA sequences of five species of bacteria to outline the evolutionary processes under which they evolved. Abstract: The temperature drop between a transistor junction and the base of a silicon chip is dependent upon the power to be dissipated as well as the geometry of the device. This problem in three-dimensional heat conduction is analytically solved for boundary conditions which approximate a set of operating conditions. Nondimensional curves and examples summarizing typical solutions have been included to illustrate problem solving techniques.

Abstract: In this paper, a QoS-aware traffic classification framework for software defined networks is proposed. Instead of identifying specific applications in most of the previous work of traffic classification, our approach classifies the network traffic into different classes according to the QoS requirements, which provide the crucial information to enable the fine-grained and QoS-aware traffic engineering. The proposed framework is fully located in the network controller so that the real-time, adaptive, and accurate traffic classification can be realized by exploiting the superior computation capacity, the global visibility, andthe inherent programmability of the network controller. More specifically, the proposed framework jointly exploits deep packet inspection (DPI) and semi-supervised machine learning so that accurate traffic classification can be realized, while requiring minimal communications between the network controller and the SDN switches. Based on the real Internet data set, the simulation results show the proposed classification framework can provide good performance in terms of classification accuracy and communication costs

Abstract: To obtain evidence concerning short-term and long-term efficacy of clinical and health status measures in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we conducted two observational studies--a 6-month study of 233 patients receiving methotrexate and a 10-year study of 157 patients receiving multiple treatments in a rheumatic disease clinic. Results of the 6-month study yielded effect sizes for treatment similar to the meta-analyses reported by Felson [corrected] et al. (Arthritis Rheum 33:1449-1461, 1990) and the controlled trials of methotrexate reported by Weinblatt et al. (Arthritis Rheum 33:330-338, 1990), suggesting that observational studies provide valid measurements of treatment effect. The effect size for the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) was 0.5. By contrast, the 10-year study suggested that standard clinical variables changed little and were not useful in assessing RA outcome, while the effect size of the HAQ was -2.39. These data continue to underscore the differences between short-term trials and the long-term outcome of RA, and suggest an important place for the HAQ or similar instruments in all phases of RA evaluation and assessment.
