Optimization of MQL flow rate for minimum cutting force and surface roughness in end milling of hardened steel (HRC 40)

Abstract: The present work focuses on the performance modeling of hard milling to attain an optimum parameter setting for the minimum cutting force and surface roughness. Furthermore, it was attempted to compute the minimum quantity lubricant flow rate precisely, besides the cutting speed and table feed rate, by adopting Grey-based Taguchi method and composite desirability function. The experimental data was collected by end milling of hardened AISI 4140 steel using carbide cutter under dry and minimum quantity lubrication conditions according to Taguchi L 16 orthogonal array. The predictive model of the responses was formulated by using response surface methodology. The analysis of variance revealed that the table feed has the maximum influence on cutting force, and the flow rate of lubricant has the highest effect on surface roughness. The parameter setting at lower table feed, higher cutting speed, and 150-ml/h lubricant flow yield the minimum value of the responses. Finally, the results of confirmation test verified the adequacy and supremacy of the optimization models; however, Grey-based Taguchi method induced a better optimization.

Sizing Up Peers: Adolescent Girls’ Weight Control and Social Comparison in the School Context

Abstract: Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and multi-level modeling, we examine the role of social comparison with schoolmates in adolescent girls' weight control. Specifically, we focus on how girls' own weight control is influenced by the body sizes and weight-control behaviors of their schoolmates. Our findings suggest that comparisons with similar others (in this case, girls of a similar body size) appear to have the strongest association with individual girls' reports of trying to lose weight. For example, the odds that an overweight girl is engaged in weight control increase substantially when many overweight girls in her school are also trying to lose weight. This study highlights how schools play an important role in shaping girls' decisions to practice weight control and demonstrates how social comparison theory improves our understanding of how health behaviors are linked to social contexts.

The Value of Investment Banking Relationships: Evidence from the Collapse of Lehman Brothers

Abstract: We examine the long-standing question of whether firms derive value from investment bank relationships by studying how the Lehman collapse affected industrial firms that received underwriting, advisory, analyst, and market-making services from Lehman Equity underwriting clients experienced an abnormal return of around -5%, on average, in the seven days surrounding Lehman’s bankruptcy, amounting to $23 billion in aggregate, risk-adjusted losses Losses were especially severe for companies that had stronger and broader security underwriting relationships with Lehman or were smaller, younger, and more financially constrained Other client groups were not adversely affected
