Abstract: A high voltage LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2/graphite cell with a fluorinated electrolyte formulation 1.0 m LiPF6 fluoroethylene carbonate/bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate is reported and its electrochemical performance is evaluated at cell voltage of 4.6 V. Comparing with its nonfluorinated electrolyte counterpart, the reported fluorinated one shows much improved Coulombic efficiency and capacity retention when a higher cut-off voltage (4.6 V) is applied. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data clearly demonstrate the superior oxidative stability of the new electrolyte. The structural stability of the bulk cathode materials cycled with different electrolytes is extensively studied by X-ray absorption near edge structure and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract: Staphylococcus epidermidis is among the most commonly isolated microbes from medical implant infections, particularly in the colonization of blood-contacting devices. We explored the relationships between surface wettability and root-mean-square roughness (Rq) on microbial adhesive strength to a substrate. Molecular-level interactions between S. epidermidis and a variety of chemically and texturally distinct model substrata were characterized using a cellular probe and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Substrata included gold, aliphatic and aromatic self-assembled monolayers, and polymeric and proteinaceous materials. Substrate hydrophobicity, described in terms of the water contact angle, was an insufficient parameter to explain the adhesive force of the bacterium for any of the surfaces. Correlations between adhesion forces and Rq showed weak relationships for most surfaces. Abstract: Good error messages are critical for novice programmers. Re-cognizing this, the DrRacket programming environment provides a series of pedagogically-inspired language subsets with error messages customized to each subset. We apply human-factors research methods to explore the effectiveness of these messages. Unlike existing work in this area, we study messages at a fine-grained level by analyzing the edits students make in response to various classes of errors. We present a rubric (which is not language specific) to evaluate student responses, apply it to a course-worth of student lab work, and describe what we have learned about using the rubric effectively. We also discuss some concrete observations on the effectiveness of these messages.

Abstract: The complete set of third-order elastic constants for single crystals of NaF was determined from the hydrostatic-pressure and uniaxial-stress derivatives of natural sound velocities measured with a two-crystal ultrasonic-interference technique. There appeared to be no dislocation motion during the uniaxial measurements since changes in the natural sound velocities with stress were linear, and data recorded before and after a $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ irradiation agreed within experimental error. The Cauchy relations were not satisfied revealing that noncentral forces between the ions are appreciable. Calculations of the elastic constants were carried out according to the Born model. The high-temperature Gr\"uneisen constant and thermal-expansion coefficient were determined from the elasticity data and the latter compared with experimental results.
