Abstract: Fluorine-19 inversion-recovery, echo-planar imaging (IR-EPI) was used in conjunction with a new PFC emulsion, perfluoro-15-crown-5-ether, to map the spatial distribution of oxygen tension in murine liver, spleen and radiation induced fibrosarcoma (RIF-1) tumors. Intravenously administered PFC emulsions were allowed to sequester in the liver, spleen, and tumor 3 to 7 days prior to imaging experiments. Seven, 64 x 64 IR-EPIs were acquired with successively increasing inversion times (TI). A nonlinear least-squares regression algorithm was used to fit the seven two-dimensional matrices, on a pixel-by-pixel basis, to solve for the relaxation rate, R1, of the sequestered PFC. From in vitro calibration curves, the oxygen tension (pO2) was calculated from the measured R1. Oxygen tension maps were then murine liver and spleen were produced (in 2.5 min) to demonstrate the technique and changes in tissue oxygenation as a function of breathing gas (air and carbogen (95% O2-5% CO2)) are presented. Tissue pO2 maps from RIF-1 tumors (n = 5) were obtained in less than 10 min and changes in tumor pO2 were studied when the breathing gas was switched from air to carbogen. The results from tumor pO2 maps were compared with 19F MR spectroscopy measurements to check for consistency. Histogram analysis yielded an average liver and spleen pO2 of 43 torr and 26 torr for RIF-1 tumors when the animals were breathing air. Statistically significant changes in tumor oxygenation as a function of breathing gas were obtained from both pO2 maps (6 +/- 2 torr, P < 0.05) and 19F MR spectroscopy (13 +/- 3 torr, P < 0.01) as evaluated using the Student's paired t test.

Abstract: Dynamic plan migration is concerned with the on-the-fly transition from one continuous query plan to a semantically equivalent yet more efficient plan. Migration is important for stream monitoring systems where long-running queries may have to withstand fluctuations in stream workloads and data characteristics. Existing migration methods generally adopt a pause-drain-resume strategy that pauses the processing of new data, purges all old data in the existing plan, until finally the new plan can be plugged into the system. However, these existing strategies do not address the problem of migrating query plans that contain stateful operators, such as joins. We now develop solutions for online plan migration for continuous stateful plans. In particular, in this paper, we propose two alternative strategies, called the moving state strategy and the parallel track strategy, one exploiting reusability and the second employs parallelism to seamlessly migrate between continuous join plans without affecting the results of the query. We develop cost models for both migration strategies to analytically compare them. We embed these migration strategies into the CAPE [7], a prototype system of a stream query engine, and conduct a comparative experimental study to evaluate these two strategies for window-based join plans. Our experimental results illustrate that the two strategies can vary significantly in terms of output rates and intermediate storage spaces given distinct system configurations and stream workloads.

Abstract: A power system static-state estimator has the ability to detect and purge some measurement errors. This paper develops the theoretical basis for determining the bad measurement detectability properties of the state estimator from the topology of the 1-line diagram and the locations of the measurements. Based on this theory, an algorithm is described that: 1) identifies those measurements that have detectable error residuals; and 2) determines the regions of measurement error residual spread.

Abstract: The recent Spectre attack first showed how to inject incorrect branch targets into a victim domain by poisoning microarchitectural branch prediction history. In this paper, we generalize injection-based methodologies to the memory hierarchy by directly injecting incorrect, attacker-controlled values into a victim’s transient execution. We propose Load Value Injection (LVI) as an innovative technique to reversely exploit Meltdown-type microarchitectural data leakage. LVI abuses that faulting or assisted loads, executed by a legitimate victim program, may transiently use dummy values or poisoned data from various microarchitectural buffers, before eventually being re-issued by the processor. We show how LVI gadgets allow to expose victim secrets and hijack transient control flow. We practically demonstrate LVI in several proof-of-concept attacks against Intel SGX enclaves, and we discuss implications for traditional user process and kernel isolation. State-of-the-art Meltdown and Spectre defenses, including widespread silicon-level and microcode mitigations, are orthogonal to our novel LVI techniques. LVI drastically widens the spectrum of incorrect transient paths. Fully mitigating our attacks requires serializing the processor pipeline with lfence instructions after possibly every memory load. Additionally and even worse, due to implicit loads, certain instructions have to be blacklisted, including the ubiquitous x86 ret instruction. Intel plans compiler and assembler-based full mitigations that will allow at least SGX enclave programs to remain secure on LVI-vulnerable systems. Depending on the application and optimization strategy, we observe extensive overheads of factor 2 to 19 for prototype implementations of the full mitigation.
