Abstract: This paper analyzes a direct-sequence, spread-spectrum, multiple-access (SSMA) communication system which assigns a set of M orthogonal sequences to each user. With all direct sequence SSMA systems, K users share a channel by phase modulating their transmissions with signature sequences. However, the users of our system transmit log_{2}M bits of information/sequence. This contrasts classical SSMA schemes which use a pair of antipodal sequences and transmit 1 bit/sequence. In this paper, we assume that the channel noise is a combination of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multiple-access interference. We employ the optimum (single-user) demodulator for orthogonal signals in Gaussian noise. The multiple-user performance of this receiver is analyzed. We obtain approximations for the multiuser probability of error by using a Gaussian approximation for the multiple-access interference. We also obtain an upper bound on the exact probability by using characteristic functions. Our SSMA system is Well suited for application at the lower radio frequencies. Therefore, a companion paper describes a realistic model for low-frequency radio noise, modifies the receiver to include a zero-memory nonlinearity, and studies the performance of the nonlinear receiver.

Abstract: The body area network (BAN) is a key enabling technology in e-healthcare. An important security issue is to establish initial trust relationships among the BAN devices before they are actually deployed and generate necessary shared secret keys to protect the subsequent wireless communications. Due to the ad hoc nature of the BAN and the extreme resource constraints of sensor devices, providing secure as well as efficient and user-friendly trust initialization is a challenging task. Traditional solutions for wireless sensor networks mostly depend on key predistribution, which is unsuitable for a BAN in many ways. In this article, we propose group device pairing (GDP), a user-aided multi-party authenticated key agreement protocol. Through GDP, a group of sensor devices that have no pre-shared secrets establish initial trust by generating various shared secret keys out of an unauthenticated channel. Devices authenticate themselves to each other with the aid of a human user who performs visual verifications. The GDP supports fast batch deployment, addition and revocation of sensor devices, does not rely on any additional hardware device, and is mostly based on symmetric key cryptography. We formally prove the security of the proposed protocols, and we implement GDP on a sensor network testbed and report performance evaluation results.

Abstract: This paper rigorously considers the concept of apparent power in unbalanced three-phase situations. The analysis shows that there are various related but different concepts that can be associated with the apparent power. In particular two approaches are covered, the one relating to the literature on the single-phase sinusoidal case, the other relating to the recent IEEE Standard 1459-2000. The underlying ideas for each concept are given; the relationship and the differences between them are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract: Direct questioning about the ‘felt sense’ of organizational actions or artefacts is an accepted way to explore organizational members’ aesthetic experience. However, this requires organizational members to be able to talk about their aesthetic experience, to translate that felt sense into language. I suggest this is often difficult due to aesthetic muteness, which is a significant problem, not just for research but for organizational practice in general. I use empirical data to illustrate how this aesthetic muteness is manifested in the research process as organizational members’ difficulty in approaching their experience from an aesthetic perspective, reframing from ‘feeling’ to ‘thinking’, inability to recall aesthetic experience and denial of aesthetic experience. I then speculate that aesthetic muteness might be caused by threats to harmony, efficiency and images of power and effectiveness and that the consequences of aesthetic muteness are aesthetic amnesia, a narrowed conception of organizational ae...
