TL;DR: It seems that the full potential of urease inhibition has not yet been fully explored, as only one compound, acetohydroxamic acid, has been clinically used for the treatment of urinary tract infections by ure enzyme inhibition, and it exhibits severe side effects.
Abstract: Introduction: Urease is the enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea, which is involved in serious infections caused by Helicobacter pylori in the gastric tract, as well as Proteus and related species in the urinary tract. The necessity to treat such infections has stimulated intensive studies on various groups of urease inhibitors. Areas covered: Patent literature on urease inhibitors with possible applications in medicine is reviewed in this paper. Hydroxamic acids, phosphoramidates, urea derivatives, quinones and heterocyclic compounds constitute the major classes of structures with such activity. Expert opinion: Until now, only one compound, acetohydroxamic acid, has been clinically used for the treatment of urinary tract infections by urease inhibition. Unfortunately, it exhibits severe side effects. Thus, it seems that the full potential of urease inhibition has not yet been fully explored. Several Japanese patents related to the use of herbal extracts as sources of polyphenolic urease inhibitor...

TL;DR: In this paper, polysulfone membranes were modified with plasma of CO2 to obtain highly hydrophilic surfaces of acidic character, and it was shown that prolonged treatment caused severe surface degradation, increase of pore size and widening of their distribution.

TL;DR: The fabrication and characterization of the first guiding chalcogenide As(2)S(3) microstructured optical fibers with a suspended core with a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) is reported.
Abstract: We report the fabrication and characterization of the first guiding chalcogenide As2S3 microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with a suspended core. At 1.55 µm, the measured losses are approximately 0.7 dB/m or 0.35 dB/m according to the MOF core size. The fibers have been designed to present a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) around 2 µm. By pumping the fibers at 1.55 µm, strong spectral broadenings are obtained in both 1.8 and 45-m-long fibers by using a picosecond fiber laser.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of cryogenic treatment on the distribution of residual stress in the case carburized steel (En 353) was studied using X-ray diffraction technique.
Abstract: The effect of cryogenic treatment on the distribution of residual stress in the case carburized steel (En 353) was studied using X-ray diffraction technique. Two types of cryogenic treatment: shallow cryogenic treatment (193 K) and deep cryogenic treatment (77 K) were adopted, as a supplement to conventional heat treatment. The amount of retained austenite in conventionally heat-treated, shallow cryogenically treated and deep cryogenically treated samples was found to be 28%, 22% and 14%, respectively. The conventionally heat-treated, shallow cryogenically treated and deep cryogenically treated samples in untempered condition had a surface residual stress of −125 MPa, −115 MPa and −235 MPa, respectively. After tempering the conventionally heat-treated, shallow cryogenically treated and deep cryogenically treated samples had a surface residual stress of −150 MPa, −80 MPa and −80 MPa, respectively. A comparative study of the three treatments revealed that there was an increase in the compressive residual stress in steel that was subjected to cryogenic treatment prior to tempering. The experimental investigation revealed that deep cryogenically treated steel when subjected to tempering has undergone a reduction in compressive residual stress. Such stress relieving behaviour was mainly due to the increased precipitation of fine carbides in specimens subjected to DCT with tempering.
