TL;DR: In-depth analysis of TEGs is presented, beginning with a comprehensive overview of their working principles such as the Seebeck effect, the Peltier effect,The Thomson effect and Joule heating with their applications, materials used, Figure of Merit, improvement techniques including different thermoelectric material arrangements and technologies used and substrate types.
Abstract: Nowadays humans are facing difficult issues, such as increasing power costs, environmental pollution and global warming. In order to reduce their consequences, scientists are concentrating on improving power generators focused on energy harvesting. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have demonstrated their capacity to transform thermal energy directly into electric power through the Seebeck effect. Due to the unique advantages they present, thermoelectric systems have emerged during the last decade as a promising alternative among other technologies for green power production. In this regard, thermoelectric device output prediction is important both for determining the future use of this new technology and for specifying the key design parameters of thermoelectric generators and systems. Moreover, TEGs are environmentally safe, work quietly as they do not include mechanical mechanisms or rotating elements and can be manufactured on a broad variety of substrates such as silicon, polymers and ceramics. In addition, TEGs are position-independent, have a long working life and are ideal for bulk and compact applications. Furthermore, Thermoelectric generators have been found as a viable solution for direct generation of electricity from waste heat in industrial processes. This paper presents in-depth analysis of TEGs, beginning with a comprehensive overview of their working principles such as the Seebeck effect, the Peltier effect, the Thomson effect and Joule heating with their applications, materials used, Figure of Merit, improvement techniques including different thermoelectric material arrangements and technologies used and substrate types. Moreover, performance simulation examples such as COMSOL Multiphysics and ANSYS-Computational Fluid Dynamics are investigated.

TL;DR: In this article, the neutral aminopeptidases of the malaria parasite were characterized using X-ray crystal structure and substrate specificity, which set the groundwork for the development of antimalarial therapeutics.
Abstract: Plasmodium falciparum parasites are responsible for the major global disease malaria, which results in >2 million deaths each year. With the rise of drug-resistant malarial parasites, novel drug targets and lead compounds are urgently required for the development of new therapeutic strategies. Here, we address this important problem by targeting the malarial neutral aminopeptidases that are involved in the terminal stages of hemoglobin digestion and essential for the provision of amino acids used for parasite growth and development within the erythrocyte. We characterize the structure and substrate specificity of one such aminopeptidase, PfA-M1, a validated drug target. The X-ray crystal structure of PfA-M1 alone and in complex with the generic inhibitor, bestatin, and a phosphinate dipeptide analogue with potent in vitro and in vivo antimalarial activity, hPheP[CH2]Phe, reveals features within the protease active site that are critical to its function as an aminopeptidase and can be exploited for drug development. These results set the groundwork for the development of antimalarial therapeutics that target the neutral aminopeptidases of the parasite.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that this probiotic yeast secreted by S. boulardii secretes into the medium active compounds reducing candidal virulence factors, which is responsible for inhibition of C. albicans filamentation and partially also adhesion and biofilm formation.
Abstract: Candidiasis are life-threatening systemic fungal diseases, especially of gastro intestinal track, skin and mucous membranes lining various body cavities like the nostrils, the mouth, the lips, the eyelids, the ears or the genital area. Due to increasing resistance of candidiasis to existing drugs, it is very important to look for new strategies helping the treatment of such fungal diseases. One promising strategy is the use of the probiotic microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit. Such a probiotic microorganism is yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, a close relative of baker yeast. Saccharomyces boulardii cells and their extract affect the virulence factors of the important human fungal pathogen C. albicans, its hyphae formation, adhesion and biofilm development. Extract prepared from S. boulardii culture filtrate was fractionated and GC-MS analysis showed that the active fraction contained, apart from 2-phenylethanol, caproic, caprylic and capric acid whose presence was confirmed by ESI-MS analysis. Biological activity was tested on C. albicans using extract and pure identified compounds. Our study demonstrated that this probiotic yeast secretes into the medium active compounds reducing candidal virulence factors. The chief compound inhibiting filamentous C. albicans growth comparably to S. boulardii extract was capric acid, which is thus responsible for inhibition of hyphae formation. It also reduced candidal adhesion and biofilm formation, though three times less than the extract, which thus contains other factors suppressing C. albicans adherence. The expression profile of selected genes associated with C. albicans virulence by real-time PCR showed a reduced expression of HWP1, INO1 and CSH1 genes in C. albicans cells treated with capric acid and S. boulardii extract. Hence capric acid secreted by S. boulardii is responsible for inhibition of C. albicans filamentation and partially also adhesion and biofilm formation.

01 Mar 2009TL;DR: A comprehensive survey of the related results reveals that most of the learning models in scheduling are based on the learning curve introduced by Wright, and it is proved that the makespan minimization problem on a single processor is NP- hard or strongly NP-hard with themost of the considered learning models.
Abstract: The existence of the learning effect in many manufacturing systems is undoubted; thus, it is worthwhile that it be taken into consideration during production planning to increase production efficiency. Generally, it can be done by formulating the specified problem in the scheduling context and optimizing an order of jobs to minimize the given time criteria. To carry out a reliable study of the learning effect in scheduling fields, a comprehensive survey of the related results is presented first. It reveals that most of the learning models in scheduling are based on the learning curve introduced by Wright. However, further study about learning itself pointed out that the curve may be an ldquoSrdquo-shaped function, which has not been considered in the scheduling domain. To fill this gap, we analyze a scheduling problem with a new experience-based learning model, where job processing times are described by ldquoSrdquo-shaped functions that are dependent on the experience of the processor. Moreover, problems with other experience-based learning models are also taken into consideration. We prove that the makespan minimization problem on a single processor is NP-hard or strongly NP-hard with the most of the considered learning models. A number of polynomially solvable cases are also provided.
