Abstract: A probabilistic password model assigns a probability value to each string. Such models are useful for research into understanding what makes users choose more (or less) secure passwords, and for constructing password strength meters and password cracking utilities. Guess number graphs generated from password models are a widely used method in password research. In this paper, we show that probability-threshold graphs have important advantages over guess-number graphs. They are much faster to compute, and at the same time provide information beyond what is feasible in guess-number graphs. We also observe that research in password modeling can benefit from the extensive literature in statistical language modeling. We conduct a systematic evaluation of a large number of probabilistic password models, including Markov models using different normalization and smoothing methods, and found that, among other things, Markov models, when done correctly, perform significantly better than the Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar model proposed in Weir et al., which has been used as the state-of-the-art password model in recent research.

Abstract: A platform for capture and release of circulating tumor cells is demonstrated by utilizing polymer grafted silicon nanowires. In this platform, integration of ligand-receptor recognition, nanostructure amplification, and thermal responsive polymers enables a highly efficient and selective capture of cancer cells. Subsequently, these captured cells are released upon a physical stimulation with outstanding cell viability.

Abstract: This study reports a family of photothermal materials, metal ion/tannic acid assemblies (MITAs). MITAs from FeIII, VIII, and RuIII afford excellent photothermal efficiency (η ≈ 40%). Sharply differing from the currently existing photothermal agents, MITAs are highlighted by merits including green synthesis, facile incorporation of diagnostic metal ions, and particularly topology-independent adhesion. Owing to the adhesion nature of MITAs, various kinds of MITA-based nanoengineerings are readily available via the self-adhesion of MITAs onto diverse templates, enabling MITAs well suited as a photothermal platform for versatile combination with other therapy approaches and imaging techniques. As a proof of concept, polymeric/inorganic nanoparticle/nanovesicle-supported FeIII-tannic acid (FeIIITA) is fabricated. The photothermal effect is shown to be unaffected by the template origin and type and FeIIITA thickness on the templates. Abstract: Through comparing the photocatalytic performance of microscale ZnO, nano ZnO, and Degussa P25 titania (P25), it was found that the microscale ZnO exhibited 2.6-35.7 times higher photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of various dye pollutants than P25 under both UV-visible and visible irradiation and showed much better photostability than the nano ZnO. The photocatalysts were characterized with XRD, Raman, BET, DRUV-vis, adsorption of dye, photoelectrochemical measurement, and PL. The much higher photocataltyic activity of the microscale ZnO than P25 under UV-visible irradiation is attributed to the higher efficiency of generation, mobility, and separation of photoinduced electrons and holes. The much higher visible photocataltyic activity of the microscale ZnO than P25 is due to the higher photosensitization efficiency of electron transfer from an excited dye to the conduction band of the microscale ZnO than that of P25. The much better photostability of the microscale ZnO than the nano ZnO is due to its better crystallinity and lower defects. The photostability of the microscale ZnO is greatly improved by the surface modification of ZnO with a small amount of TiO(2). On the basis of the excellent photocatalytic performance of the microscale ZnO and TiO(2)-modified ZnO, a novel device of coupling photodegradation with light-to-electricity conversion was developed, which is a promising candidate for the photocatalytic removal of dye pollutants and a renewable energy source.
