Abstract: Black BiOCl with oxygen vacancies was prepared by UV light irradiation with Ar blowing. The as-prepared black BiOCl sample showed 20 times higher visible light photocatalytic activity than white BiOCl for RhB degradation. The trapping experiment showed that the superoxide radical () and holes (h+) were the main active species in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation.

Abstract: Polysaccharide-based hydrogels have multiple advantages because of their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicic properties. The feasibility of using polysaccharide-based hydrogels could be improved if they could simultaneously fulfill the mechanical property and cell compatibility requirements for practical applications. Herein, the construction of double-cross-linked (DC) cellulose hydrogels is described using sequential chemical and physical cross-linking, resulting in DC cellulose hydrogels that are mechanically superior to single-cross-linked cellulose hydrogels. The formation and spatial distribution of chemically cross-linked domains and physically cross-linked domains within the DC cellulose hydrogels are demonstrated. The molar ratio of epichlorohydrin to anhydroglucose units of cellulose and the concentration of the aqueous ethanol solution are two critical parameters for obtaining mechanically strong and tough DC cellulose hydrogels. The mechanical properties of the DC cellulose hydrogels under loading-unloading cycles are described using compression and tension models. The possible toughening mechanism of double-cross-linking is discussed.

Abstract: A current challenge to alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells (APEFCs) is the unexpectedly sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). A recently proposed resolution is to enhance the oxophilicity of the catalyst, so as to remove the Had intermediate through the reaction with OHad, but this approach is questioned by other researchers. Here we report a clear and convincing test on this problem. By using PtRu/C as the HOR catalyst for the APEFC, the peak power density is boosted to 1.0 W cm−2, in comparison to 0.6 W cm−2 when using Pt/C as the anode catalyst. Such a remarkable improvement, however, can hardly be explained as an oxophilic effect, because, as monitored by CO stripping, reactive hydroxyl species can generate on certain sites of the Pt surface at more negative potentials than on the PtRu surface in KOH solution. Rather, the incorporation of Ru has posed an electronic effect on weakening the Pt–Had interaction, as revealed by the voltammetric behavior and from density-functional calculations, which thus benefits the oxidative desorption of Had, the rate determining step of HOR in alkaline media. These findings further our fundamental understanding of the HOR catalysis, and cast new light on the exploration of better catalysts for APEFCs.
