TL;DR: In this paper, Zhao et al. used Zn11−xCdxS solid solutions as the visible-light-driven photocatalysts and a mixed Na2S and Na2SO3 aqueous solution as the sacrificial reagent.
Abstract: Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production from water splitting under visible-light irradiation is considered to be an attractive way to solve the increasing global energy crises in modern life. In this study, highly efficient photocatalytic H2 production without the assistant of a cocatalyst was achieved using Zn11–xCdxS solid solutions as the visible-light-driven photocatalysts and a mixed Na2S and Na2SO3 aqueous solution as the sacrificial reagent. The Zn1–xCdxS samples were prepared by a simple zinc–cadmium–thiourea (Zn–Cd–Tu) complex thermolysis method using thiourea, zinc acetate (Zn(Ac)2), and cadmium acetate (Cd(Ac)2) as the precursors. The obtained Zn1–xCdxS solid solutions feature a small crystallite size and precisely controllable band structure, which are beneficial for the photocatalysis. When the Zn/Cd molar ratio is 1:1, the prepared Zn0.5Cd0.5S sample exhibits the highest H2-production rate of 7.42 mmol·h–1·g–1, exceeding that of the pure CdS and ZnS samples by more than 24 and 54 times, resp...

TL;DR: The size and shape effects of catalyst particles on catalytic activity and selectivity of reactions performed at solid-gas or solid-liquid interfaces are discussed with a purpose of establishing correlations of size- and shape-dependent chemical and structural factors of surface of a catalyst with the corresponding catalytic performances toward understanding of catalysis at a molecular level.
Abstract: Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the most important chemical processes of various industries performed on catalyst nanoparticles with different sizes or/and shapes. In the past two decades, the catalytic performances of different catalytic reactions on nanoparticles of metals and oxides with well controlled sizes or shapes have been extensively studied thanks to the spectacular advances in syntheses of nanomaterials of metals and oxides. This review discussed the size and shape effects of catalyst particles on catalytic activity and selectivity of reactions performed at solid–gas or solid–liquid interfaces with a purpose of establishing correlations of size- and shape-dependent chemical and structural factors of surface of a catalyst with the corresponding catalytic performances toward understanding of catalysis at a molecular level.

TL;DR: A single-nanowire-based zinc-ion battery is assembled, which reveals the intrinsic Zn2+ storage mechanism at nanoscale and makes Na2V6O16·1.63H2O a promising cathode for a low-cost and safe aqueous zinc-ION battery.
Abstract: Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries are highly desirable for grid-scale applications due to their low cost and high safety; however, the poor cycling stability hinders their widespread application Herein, a highly durable zinc-ion battery system with a Na2V6O16·163H2O nanowire cathode and an aqueous Zn(CF3SO3)2 electrolyte has been developed The Na2V6O16·163H2O nanowires deliver a high specific capacity of 352 mAh g–1 at 50 mA g–1 and exhibit a capacity retention of 90% over 6000 cycles at 5000 mA g–1, which represents the best cycling performance compared with all previous reports In contrast, the NaV3O8 nanowires maintain only 17% of the initial capacity after 4000 cycles at 5000 mA g–1 A single-nanowire-based zinc-ion battery is assembled, which reveals the intrinsic Zn2+ storage mechanism at nanoscale The remarkable electrochemical performance especially the long-term cycling stability makes Na2V6O16·163H2O a promising cathode for a low-cost and safe aqueous zinc-ion battery

TL;DR: The recent advances in the controlled synthesis are discussed, as well as applications of intricate hollow structures with regard to energy storage and conversion, and synthetic strategies toward complex multishelled hollow structures are classified into six categories.
Abstract: Intricate hollow structures garner tremendous interest due to their aesthetic beauty, unique structural features, fascinating physicochemical properties, and widespread applications. Here, the recent advances in the controlled synthesis are discussed, as well as applications of intricate hollow structures with regard to energy storage and conversion. The synthetic strategies toward complex multishelled hollow structures are classified into six categories, including well-established hard- and soft-templating methods, as well as newly emerging approaches based on selective etching of “soft@hard” particles, Ostwald ripening, ion exchange, and thermally induced mass relocation. Strategies for constructing structures beyond multishelled hollow structures, such as bubble-within-bubble, tube-in-tube, and wire-in-tube structures, are also covered. Niche applications of intricate hollow structures in lithium-ion batteries, Li–S batteries, supercapacitors, Li–O2 batteries, dye-sensitized solar cells, photocatalysis, and fuel cells are discussed in detail. Some perspectives on the future research and development of intricate hollow structures are also provided.
