TL;DR: A comprehensive review of the recent literature on nanostructured cellulose is presented in this paper, where various chemical and physical surface treatment procedures reported for nanocellulose have been reviewed in this paper.
Abstract: Research on nanocellulose has significantly increased over the past few decades, owing to the various attractive characteristics of this material, such as renewability, widespread availability, low density, excellent mechanical properties, economic value, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Nanocellulose categorized into two main types, namely cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). In this review, we present the recent advances made in the production of CNFs and CNCs. In addition to the conventional mechanical and chemical treatments used to prepare CNFs and CNCs, respectively, other promising techniques as well as pretreatment processes have been also proposed in recent times, in an effort to design an economically efficient and eco-friendly production route for nanocellulose. Further, while the hydrophilic nature of nanocellulose limits its use in polymeric matrices and in some industrial applications, the large number of hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose provides a suitable platform for various kinds of modification treatments. The various chemical and physical surface treatment procedures reported for nanocellulose have been reviewed in this paper. Finally, in this review, we summarize the life cycle assessment studies conducted so far on nanocellulose, which quantify the environmental impact of nanocellulose products. The current paper is a comprehensive review of the recent literature on nanostructured cellulose.

TL;DR: D density functional calculations are utilized for the first time to guide the application of phosphorene as a high-efficiency metal-free co-catalyst for CdS, Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S or ZnS.
Abstract: Transitional metals are widely used as co-catalysts boosting photocatalytic H2 production. However, metal-based co-catalysts suffer from high cost, limited abundance and detrimental environment impact. To date, metal-free co-catalyst is rarely reported. Here we for the first time utilized density functional theory to guide the application of phosphorene as a high-efficiency metal-free co-catalyst for CdS, Zn0.8Cd0.2S or ZnS. Particularly, phosphorene modified CdS shows a high apparent quantum yield of 34.7% at 420 nm. This outstanding activity arises from the strong electronic coupling between phosphorene and CdS, as well as the favorable band structure, high charge mobility and massive active sites of phosphorene, supported by computations and advanced characterizations, e.g. synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. This work brings new opportunities to prepare highly-active, cheap and green photocatalysts.

TL;DR: In this paper, a step-scheme core-shell TiO2 @ZnIn2 S4 heterojunction was designed for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. But the performance of the optimized sample was limited by the large specific surface areas and abundant active sites.
Abstract: Reasonable design of efficient hierarchical photocatalysts has gained significant attention. Herein, a step-scheme (S-scheme) core-shell TiO2 @ZnIn2 S4 heterojunction is designed for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The optimized sample exhibits much higher CO2 photoreduction conversion rates (the sum yield of CO, CH3 OH, and CH4 ) than the blank control, i.e., ZnIn2 S4 and TiO2 . The improved photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the inhibited recombination of photogenerated charge carriers induced by S-scheme heterojunction. The improvement is also attributed to the large specific surface areas and abundant active sites. Meanwhile, S-scheme photogenerated charge transfer mechanism is testified by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, work function calculation, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. This work provides an effective strategy for designing highly efficient heterojunction photocatalysts for conversion of solar fuels.

TL;DR: This work proposes a new empirically based criterion for sustainability of the combustion reaction, where the adiabatic temperature that represents the maximum temperature to which the reacting compact is raised as the combustion wave passes through, must be high enough to melt the lower melting point component.
Abstract: The existing methods of synthesis of thermoelectric (TE) materials remain constrained to multi-step processes that are time and energy intensive. Here we demonstrate that essentially all compound thermoelectrics can be synthesized in a single-phase form at a minimal cost and on the timescale of seconds using a combustion process called self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. We illustrate this method on Cu2Se and summarize key reaction parameters for other materials. We propose a new empirically based criterion for sustainability of the combustion reaction, where the adiabatic temperature that represents the maximum temperature to which the reacting compact is raised as the combustion wave passes through, must be high enough to melt the lower melting point component. Our work opens a new avenue for ultra-fast, low-cost, large-scale production of TE materials, and provides new insights into combustion process, which greatly broaden the scope of materials that can be successfully synthesized by this technique.
