TL;DR: Results indicate the unique ZnO@Co3O4 electrode would be a promising electrode for high-performance supercapacitor applications and the growth mechanism for such unique core/shell heterostructures is proposed.
Abstract: Currently, tremendous attention has been paid to the rational design and synthesis of unique core/shell heterostructures for high-performance supercapacitors. In this work, the unique ZnO@Co3O4 core/shell heterostructures on nickel foam are successfully synthesized through a facile and cost-effective hydrothermal method combined with a short post annealing treatment. Mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires are multidirectional growing on the rhombus-like ZnO nanorods. In addition, the growth mechanism for such unique core/shell heterostructures is also proposed. Supercapacitor electrodes based on the ZnO@Co3O4 and Co3O4 heterostructures on nickel foam are thoroughly characterized. The ZnO@Co3O4 electrode exhibits high capacitance of 1.72 F cm–2 (857.7 F g–1) at a current density of 1 A g–1, which is higher than that of the Co3O4 electrode. Impressively, the capacitance of the ZnO@Co3O4 electrode increases gradually from 1.29 to 1.66 F cm–2 (830.8 F g–1) after 6000 cycles at a high current density of 6 A g–1, indicatin...

TL;DR: In this paper, the cointegrating relationship between crude oil prices and global economic activity was investigated based on a supply-demand framework and cointegration theory, and it was shown that real futures prices of crude oil are cointegrated with the Kilian economic index and a trade weighted US dollar index.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates an effective strategy of engineering the yolk@shell-architectured anodes and sheds light onto harnessing the complex multistep reactions in metal sulfides to enable high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
Abstract: High-performance lithium-ion batteries are commonly built with heterogeneous composite electrodes that combine multiple active components for serving various electrochemical and structural functions. Engineering these heterogeneous composite electrodes toward drastically improved battery performance is hinged on a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of multiple active components and their synergy or trade-off effects. Herein, we report a rational design, fabrication, and understanding of yolk@shell Bi2S3@N-doped mesoporous carbon (C) composite anode, consisting of a Bi2S3 nanowire (NW) core within a hollow space surrounded by a thin shell of N-doped mesoporous C. This composite anode exhibits desirable rate performance and long cycle stability (700 cycles, 501 mAhg–1 at 1.0 Ag–1, 85% capacity retention). By in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction, and NMR experiments and computational modeling, we elucidate the dominant mechanisms of the phase transformation, structural e...

TL;DR: In this article, the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 as a saturable absorber (SA) is exploited to Q-switch fiber lasers at 2 μm wavelength for the first time.
Abstract: In this paper, Topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 as a saturable absorber (SA) is exploited to Q-switch fiber lasers at 2 μm wavelength for the first time. Few-layer TI:Bi 2Se 3 nanosheets in CS-HAc solution are prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method, and the thin 2-D structure with the thickness of 3-5 layers is well characterized. The open-aperture Z-scan experiment shows that the few-layer TI:Bi 2Se 3 has the saturable optical intensity of 41 MW/cm 2 at 800 nm and the modulation depth of 3.7%. The optical deposition technique is used to efficiently assemble the TI:Bi 2Se 3 nanosheets in the solution onto a fiber ferrule, therefore constructing a fiber-compatible TI-based SA (FC-TISA). By further inserting the FC-TISA into a diode-pumped Tm 3+-doped double-clad fiber laser (TM-DCFL), stable Q-switching operation at 1.98 μm is successfully achieved with the shortest pulse width of 4.18 μs and the tunable repetition rate from 8.4 to 26.8 kHz. In particular, the TM-DCFL can deliver large-energy Q-switched pulses with the pulse energy as high as 313 nJ (corresponding to average output power of 8.4 mW). Our results suggest that TI-based SA is suitable for pulsed laser operation in the eye-safe region of 2 μm, and potentially develops as an ultra-broadband photonics device.
