Abstract: We propose a weighted variational model to estimate both the reflectance and the illumination from an observed image. We show that, though it is widely adopted for ease of modeling, the log-transformed image for this task is not ideal. Based on the previous investigation of the logarithmic transformation, a new weighted variational model is proposed for better prior representation, which is imposed in the regularization terms. Different from conventional variational models, the proposed model can preserve the estimated reflectance with more details. Moreover, the proposed model can suppress noise to some extent. An alternating minimization scheme is adopted to solve the proposed model. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model with its algorithm. Compared with other variational methods, the proposed method yields comparable or better results on both subjective and objective assessments.

Abstract: The key to enabling long-term cycling stability of high-voltage lithium (Li) metal batteries is the development of functional electrolytes that are stable against both Li anodes and high-voltage (above 4 V versus Li/Li+) cathodes. Due to their limited oxidative stability ( 90% over 300 cycles and ~80% over 500 cycles with a charge cut-off voltage of 4.3 V. This study offers a promising approach to enable ether-based electrolytes for high-voltage Li metal battery applications. Ether-based electrolytes offer many advantages compared to other electrolyte systems, but they are not stable in Li metal batteries when operating at high voltages. Here, the authors develop a concentrated ether electrolyte that enables long-term cycling stability of high-voltage Li metal batteries.

Abstract: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has long been considered as a noninvasive technique that can obtain the fingerprint vibrational information of surface species. We demonstrated in this paper that a laser with a power level considered to be low in the traditional SERS measurement can already lead to a significant surface reaction. para-Aminothiophenol, an important probe molecule in SERS, was found to be oxidized to form 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) on a roughened silver surface during the SERS measurement. The assumption was confirmed experimentally by surface mass spectroscopy and SERS as well as electrochemistry of the synthesized DMAB, which agrees well with theoretical calculations. A defocusing method was used to avoid the laser induced surface reaction and perform reliable SERS characterization and identification, which can effectively avoid erroneous interpretation of the distorted experimental result.

Abstract: Composites incorporating ferromagnetic metal nanopartices into a highly porous carbon matrix are promising as electromagnetic wave absorption materials. Such special composite nanomaterials are potentially prepared by the thermal decomposition of metal–organic framework (MOF) materials under controlled atmospheres. In this study, using Co-based MOFs (Co-MOF, ZIF-67) as an example, the feasibility of this synthetic strategy was demonstrated by the successful fabrication of porous Co/C composite nanomaterials. The atmosphere and temperature for the thermal decomposition of MOF precursors were crucial factors for the formation of the ferromagnetic metal nanopartices and carbon matrix in the porous Co/C composites. Among the three Co/C composites obtained at different temperatures, Co/C-500 obtained at 500 °C exhibited the best performance for electromagnetic wave absorption.
