TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impact of organizational training on employee commitment focusing on employees' emotional and affective responses towards their organization and found that all dimensions of training positively affected employee commitment.
Abstract: This empirical study investigated the impact of organizational training on employee commitment focusing on employees’ emotional and affective responses towards their organization. Organizational training is conceptualized within a multidimensional framework consisting of motivation for training, access to training, benefits from training and support for training. The hypothesis of this study has been built on a resourcebased view, social exchange theory and psychological contract theory. Field research was conducted through surveys with 298 participants of four- and five-star hotels operating in Izmir, Turkey. Confirmatory factor analyses were used to analyse the quality of the training scales and multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses of the study. The results revealed that all dimensions of training positively affected employee commitment. Implications have been presented for both researchers and human resource practitioners as to how to utilize organizational training factors to increase employee commitment.

TL;DR: Three hybrid harmony search algorithms are developed for solving the flow shop scheduling with blocking to minimize the total flow time and some new pitch adjustment rules are developed to well inherit good structures from the globalbest harmony vector.
Abstract: In this paper, three hybrid harmony search (HS) algorithms, namely, hybrid harmony search (hHS) algorithm, hybrid globalbest harmony search (hgHS) algorithm and hybrid modified globalbest harmony search (hmgHS) algorithm, are developed for solving the flow shop scheduling with blocking to minimize the total flow time. Firstly, a largest position value (LPV) rule is proposed to convert continuous harmony vectors into job permutations. Secondly, an initialization scheme based on a variant of the NEH heuristic is presented to construct the initial harmony memory with certain quality and diversity. Thirdly, HS is employed to evolve harmony vectors in the harmony memory to perform exploration, whereas a local search algorithm based on the insert neighborhood is embedded to enhance the local exploitation ability. In addition, some new pitch adjustment rules are developed to well inherit good structures from the globalbest harmony vector. Based on a set of well-known benchmark instances, extensive computational experiments are carried out. Computational results show the effectiveness of the hybrid harmony search algorithms, especially the (hmgHS) algorithm, in solving the blocking flow shop scheduling with total flow time criterion.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship between perceived organisational support and the dimensions of organisational commitment, and they found that job satisfaction had a significant positive effect on affective, normative and continuous commitment.
Abstract: Previous studies mainly analyzed the relationship between perceived organisational support and organisational commitment in a direct way. Limited studies of tourism, however, have found that job satisfaction is a mediator variable in the relationship between perceived organisational support and organisational commitment. The aim of this study is, to analyse the effect of organisational support on job satisfaction, to analyze the effect of organisational support on the dimensions of organisational commitment, to analyse the effect of job satisfaction on the dimensions of organisational commitment, and (iv) to analyse the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship between perceived organisational support and dimensions of organisational commitment based on an empirical study. The relationship between the variables was analyzed by using a multivariate data analysis. Besides this, in the study, the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship between perceived organisational support and the dimensions of organisational commitment was analyzed by the technique recommended by Baron and Kenny (1986) and the Sobel test. The findings indicated that perceived organisational support had a significant positive effect on job satisfaction, affective, normative and continuous commitment. Job satisfaction had a significant positive effect on affective, normative and continuous commitment as well. Besides this, job satisfaction played a partial mediating role between perceived organisational support and dimensions of organisational commitment. Implications were presented for hotel managers who want to keep and encourage their employees to work in the hotel industry.

TL;DR: The computational results show that the proposed DLHS algorithm is more effective or at least competitive in finding near-optimal solutions compared with state-of-the-art harmony search variants.
Abstract: This article presents a local-best harmony search algorithm with dynamic subpopulations (DLHS) for solving the bound-constrained continuous optimization problems. Unlike existing harmony search algorithms, the DLHS algorithm divides the whole harmony memory (HM) into many small-sized sub-HMs and the evolution is performed in each sub-HM independently. To maintain the diversity of the population and to improve the accuracy of the final solution, information exchange among the sub-HMs is achieved by using a periodic regrouping schedule. Furthermore, a novel harmony improvisation scheme is employed to benefit from good information captured in the local best harmony vector. In addition, an adaptive strategy is developed to adjust the parameters to suit the particular problems or the particular phases of search process. Extensive computational simulations and comparisons are carried out by employing a set of 16 benchmark problems from the literature. The computational results show that, overall, the proposed D...

TL;DR: This paper presents an ensemble of differential evolution algorithms employing the variable parameter search and two distinct mutation strategies in the ensemble to solve real-parameter constrained optimization problems.
Abstract: This paper presents an ensemble of differential evolution algorithms employing the variable parameter search and two distinct mutation strategies in the ensemble to solve real-parameter constrained optimization problems. It is well known that the performance of DE is sensitive to the choice of mutation strategies and associated control parameters. For these reasons, the ensemble is achieved in such a way that each individual is assigned to one of the two distinct mutation strategies or a variable parameter search (VPS). The algorithm was tested using benchmark instances in Congress on Evolutionary Computation 2010. For these benchmark problems, the problem definition file, codes and evaluation criteria are available in http://www.ntu.edu.sg/home/EPNSugan. Since the optimal or best known solutions are not available in the literature, the detailed computational results required in line with the special session format are provided for the competition.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a content analysis on online job announcements to define the role inventory of the marketing manager, and found that marketing managers are responsible for six role dimensions in the organization.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to design a comprehensive responsibilities inventory for today's marketing managers, from which it develops factual inferences for the role of marketing in corporations.Design/methodology/approach – A content analysis on online job announcements is used to define the role inventory of the marketing manager.Findings – The findings reveal that marketing managers are responsible for six role dimensions in the organization. The marketing manager's assigned roles are for the management of promotion‐related activities of the company, rather than for managing other marketing mix elements. Communicational and relational (internal and external) role clusters are the most frequently addressed of marketing managers' responsibilities. Knowledge development and injection of market and marketing knowledge into the company's value network is another of the major role dimensions. Increasing financial pressures on companies mean that the outcomes of marketing actions must be measurab...

TL;DR: In this article, the characteristics of conditional volatility in the Baltic Stock Markets (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) by using a broad range of GARCH volatility models were examined.
Abstract: As time‐varying volatility has found applications in roughly all time series modelling in economics, it largely draws attention in the areas of financial markets. This study also examines the characteristics of conditional volatility in the Baltic Stock Markets (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) by using a broad range of GARCH volatility models. Correctly forecasting the volatility leads to better understanding and managing financial market risk. Daily returns from four Baltic stock indexes are used; Estonia (TALSE index), Latvia (RIGSE index), Lithuania (VILSE index) and synthetic BALTIC benchmark index. We test a large family of GARCH models, including; the basic GARCH model, GARCH‐in‐mean model, asymmetric exponential GARCH and GJR GARCH, power GARCH and component GARCH model. We find strong evidence that daily returns from Baltic Stock Markets can be successfully modelled by GARCH‐type models. For all Baltic markets, we conclude that increased risk will not necessarily lead to a rise in the retu...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the competitive structures of Turkish banking industry over the period 1998-2008 and investigated the factors that can explain differences in the degree of competitiveness, and found that the banks in Turkey operate as a whole under conditions of monopolistic competition.
Abstract: This paper examines the competitive structures of the Turkish banking industry over the period 1998–2008 and investigates the factors that can explain differences in the degree of competitiveness. The Panzar‐Rosse method is used to test for the competitive nature of the industry, which also gives the measure of competition, the H‐statistic, is related to a number of industry controls and prevailing banking structures. Our results indicate that the banking industry in Turkey is in an equilibrium state, further they are in long run equilibrium. We also found that the banks in Turkey are operating as a whole under conditions of monopolistic competition. However, the banks were able to achieve high records of profitability in monopolistically competitive markets.

TL;DR: A discrete artificial bee colony (DABC) algorithm hybridized with an iterated greedy (IG) and iterated local search (ILS) algorithms embedded in a variable neighborhood search (VNS) procedure based on swap and insertion neighborhood structures is presented.
Abstract: Very recently, Jarboui et al. [1] (Computers & Operations Research 36 (2009) 2638–2646) and Tseng and Lin [2] (European Journal of Operational Research 198 (2009) 84–92) presented a novel estimation distribution algorithm (EDA) and a hybrid genetic local search (hGLS) algorithm for the permutation flowshop scheduling (PFSP) with the total flowtime (TFT) criterion, respectively. Both algorithms generated excellent results, thus improving all the best known solutions reported in the literature so far. However, in this paper, we present a discrete artificial bee colony (DABC) algorithm hybridized with an iterated greedy (IG) and iterated local search (ILS) algorithms embedded in a variable neighborhood search (VNS) procedure based on swap and insertion neighborhood structures. We also present a hybrid version of our previous discrete differential evolution (hDDE) algorithm employing the IG and VNS structure too. The performance of the DABC and hDDE is highly competitive to the EDA and hGLS algorithms in terms of both solution quality and CPU times. Ultimately, 43 out of 60 best known solutions provided very recently by the EDA and hGLS algorithms are further improved by the DABC and hDDE algorithms with short-term search.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of IFRS adoption on the earnings conservatism as a dimension of reporting quality in Turkey and found that the impact is stronger for financial firms, for firms having lower debt levels, and for smaller firms.
Abstract: In order to increase the usefulness and quality of financial reporting, there is a move to IFRS globally. Sharing similar motivations with the rest of the world, since 2005 all publicly traded companies in Turkey have been preparing their financial statements according to International Accounting/Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) mandatory. Considering the need for understanding the economic consequences of harmonization, we investigate the impact of IFRS adoption on the earnings conservatism as a dimension of reporting quality in Turkey. The results of the study show that IFRS adoption has increased both the timeliness and earnings conservatism (asymmetric timeliness), the impact is stronger for financial firms, for firms having lower debt levels, and for smaller firms.

TL;DR: The proposed graphs of local density and local distances provide tools to analyze the correlation between these two information and to merge them in various ways to achieve an advanced visualization.
Abstract: The self-organizing map (SOM) is a powerful method for manifold learning because of producing a 2-D spatially ordered quantization of a higher dimensional data space on a rigid lattice and adaptively determining optimal approximation of the (unknown) density distribution of the data. However, a postprocessing visualization scheme is often required to capture the data manifold. A recent visualization scheme CONNvis, which is shown effective for clustering, uses a topology representing graph that shows detailed local data distribution within receptive fields. This brief proposes that this graph representation can be adapted to show local distances. The proposed graphs of local density and local distances provide tools to analyze the correlation between these two information and to merge them in various ways to achieve an advanced visualization. The brief also gives comparisons for several synthetic data sets.

TL;DR: The subprime mortgage crisis is an ongoing economic problem manifesting itself through liquidity issues, which accelerated in the United States in late 2006 and triggered a global financial crisis during 2007 and 2008 as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: I. INTRODUCTION The subprime mortgage crisis triggered by a dramatic rise in mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures in the US with major adverse consequences for banks and financial markets around the globe. The crisis, which has its roots in the closing years of the 20th century, became apparent in 2007 and has exposed pervasive weaknesses in financial industry regulation and the global financial system. The subprime mortgage crisis is an ongoing economic problem manifesting itself through liquidity issues, which accelerated in the United States in late 2006 and triggered a global financial crisis during 2007 and 2008. Global economic growth is decelerating due largely to a sharp slowdown by the subprime crisis. These effects of the subprime crisis have been noticeable chiefly in the US and Europe to date, while it seems that other countries are relatively less affected. This is the third US crisis in the past twenty years, after the Savings & Loan crisis of 1989 and the Enron/World.Com crisis in 2002. The U.S. banking system is on the verge of disaster, as banks have recorded over $100 billion in losses, with hundreds of billions more forecasted. The losses are not confined to banks alone. One of the world's largest insurance companies, American International Group, recently reported losses from the mortgage crisis of up to $5 billion-up from a previous estimate of $2 billion. This may be a sign of coming reassessments by others as the crisis intensifies. Financial innovation has paved ways for new modern investment methods and techniques in global market. Assets Backed Securities (ABS) has been one of these instruments. The process allows bundling up different assets and selling them as securities in the market to potential investors. The idea is to diversify the risk and make the maximum from the surplus money in the market. Since 2001, the U.S housing market has seen considerable transformation as well. The market has grown at a significant rate up until 2006. The reason for growth is the securitization mechanism as well as development of non-traditional mortgage product at the lower end of the market. Edelberg (2006) finds that the excessive use of risk-based pricing spurred a considerable share of the increase in debt levels seen over the past decade, and Gerardi, Rosen, and Willen (2006) are of the view that the lending innovation has boosted the capacity of young households to acquire homes that are more in line with their expected higher incomes in the future." In 2001, sub-primes accounted for 8.6% ($190 billion) of mortgage originations; this rose to 20% ($625 billion) in 2005. And in 2001, securitized sub-primes amounted to just $95 billion, growing to $507 billion by 2005 as the Fed slept at the wheel" (JEC 2007, p.18). We have structured this article in three sections. In the first section of this article, we review the literature on financialization as it applies to the development of the US economy. The literature on financialization explores the tension between financial and productive locks governing the management of the economy, social settlements and governance. Our second section reviews how modifications to the legal and accounting regulations governing the banking value chain encouraged fragmentation and outpouring connected with the process of mortgage securitization. Our final section focuses on implications of managing a financially banking sector. Where, the scale of financial assets under management combines with mark to market accounting to amplify instability especially when US bunks oblate with a fragile financial operating architecture. Net income and shareholder equity offer a limited cushion against mark to market write dowels and this fragility calls into question the viability and suitability of the US banding business model. Mortgage backed securitization provided us banks with a way to extend their lending capacity whilst also contains balance sheet risk assaulted with this process. …

Abstract: In this paper, a new square-root domain, first order, all-pass filter based on the MOSFET square law is presented. The proposed filter is designed by using nonlinear mapping on the state variables of a state space description of the transfer function. To the best knowledge of the authors, the filter is the first square-root domain first order all-pass structure designed by using state space synthesis method in the literature. The center frequency of the all-pass filter is not only attainable at megahertz frequencies but also tunable by an external bias current. The proposed filter operated 2.5 V supply voltage is constructed by current mirrors, geometric mean circuits, a linear transconductor circuit, and a capacitor. SPICE simulations are given to approve the theoretical analysis.

Abstract: The world’s sources about to running out have been realised as a result of that population increase and economic development to be lived in the twentieth century have caused the transformation from the notion of unlimited economic development to sustainable development notion. Sustainable development is a model that predicts existing generation satisfies their needs without that next generation’s satisfy their need. Projection of sustainable development on marketing area have been actualized by means of coming up with sustainable marketing approach. Sustainable marketing approach predict to create sustainable solutions by adding conformity with eco-system in addition to achieving organizational goals and satisfy consumers’ needs which traditional marketing’s goals. The target of sustainable development notion in regard of consumption is to be accepted sustainable consumption behavior. It requires inquiring factors affecting behavior in question because sustainable consumption pattern to be accepted and spread to the world. In the study examined that individual values affecting sustainable consumption behavior of class teacher who work at elementary schools in Kutahya, Merkez. The findings indicate the significant effect of universalism and security values type in sustainable consumption behavior. Also, it is found that frequency of sustainable consumption behavior is mid-level. The results of this research have significant implications for stakeholders of sustainable consumption and future research.

TL;DR: A novel approach for modeling surface reflection using a family of probability distributions called Archimedean copulas as BRDF models and it is shown that the proposed model meets the reciprocity property of reflection.
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for modeling surface reflection. We focus on using a family of probability distributions called Archimedean copulas as BRDF models. The Archimedean representation has an attractive property in that the multivariate distributions are characterized by their marginal distributions through a single univariate function only. It is shown that the proposed model meets the reciprocity property of reflection. Based on measured BRDF data, we demonstrate that the proposed approach provides a good approximation to BRDF. Empirical comparisons are made with some classically used BRDF models.

Abstract: Timed Automata is an extension to the automata-theoretic approach for the modeling of real time systems that introduces time into the classical automata. It has become an important research area in both the context of formal languages and modeling and verification of real time systems since it was proposed by Alur and Dill in the early nineties. Timed automata proposes an efficient model checking method for verification real time systems having mature and efficient automatic verification tools. One of the application areas of timed automata is the verification of security protocols which are known to be time sensitive. This study aims to make use of timed automata as a verification tool for security protocols and gives a case study on the initial part of the Neuman-Stubblebine Repeated Authentication Protocol.

TL;DR: In this paper, an innovative cross-entropy (CE) algorithm is proposed for solving the complex problems of combinatorial seaport logistics operations, which is an efficient, convenient and applicable stochastic method.
Abstract: Studies on seaport operations emphasize the fact that the numbers of resources utilized at seaport terminals add a multitude of complexities to dynamic optimization problems. In such dynamic environments, there has been a need for solving each complex operational problem to increase service efficiency and to improve seaport competitiveness. This paper states the key problems of seaport logistics and proposes an innovative cross‐entropy (CE) algorithm for solving the complex problems of combinatorial seaport logistics. Computational results exhibit that the CE algorithm is an efficient, convenient and applicable stochastic method for solving the optimization problems of seaport logistics operations.
