Abstract: The orientation of the streets and the height of continuous buildings cut off summer breezes and the prevailing wind in Izmir, Turkey. Compared with the northern parts of Turkey, the summer period in Izmir is relatively hot, humid and long. Due to the dense urban structure and the expansion of hard surface materials, the temperature in the city centre is higher than this centre's surroundings and this effect is called the urban heat island. Consequently, pedestrian comfort in the city drops dramatically especially in locations where the wind flow is obstructed by buildings. In addition, natural ventilation through the building facades is weakened due to the low average wind speed in the streets. For better outdoor and indoor comfort the citizens in Izmir should benefit from the prevailing wind and summer breezes locally named ‘imbat’ in the sea-land direction. Abstract: This paper aims to contribute to the growing Foreign Policy Analysis literature by focusing on the role of non-state actors in foreign policy implementation. Special attention is paid to the case of Turkey, which has emerged as a ‘humanitarian state’ in the last decade. In Turkey, relatively new Islamically oriented humanitarian NGOs (HNGOs) have been providing ever-increasing amounts of humanitarian aid throughout the former Ottoman lands including the Middle East and Africa. Employing a constructivist-realist perspective, this paper asserts that a ‘parallelism,’ if not a complementarity, exists between Turkey’s Islamically oriented HNGO discourse and practice and AKP foreign policy implementation process. Based on primary qualitative data acquired from interviews, this study has identified various degrees of parallelism between the two, calling into question the status of these HNGOs as purportedly non-governmental entities.

Abstract: Today, the tourism industry has altered from a steady structure to a dynamic one in order to match the emerging needs, wants and demands of tourists. Given this, understanding the motivations of tourists is key to designing better products and services. Motivation is closely linked to satisfaction, and is a crucial ingredient in terms of understanding visitors’ decision-making processes. Thus, destination marketers need to understand what motivates people to choose slow tourism, as well what segments are interested in that specific type of tourism. Examining slow tourists, this study identified seven tourist motivation factors thereof. In terms of push factors, “Relaxation”, “Self-reflection & Discovery”, “Escape”, “Novelty-seeking”, “Environmental Concern” and “Social Interaction” were identified, along with “Engagement” as a pull factor.
