Abstract: An operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) is a major building block and consumes most of the power in switched-capacitor (SC) circuits, but it is difficult to design low-voltage OTAs in scaled CMOS technologies. Instead of using an OTA, this paper proposes an inverter-based SC circuit and its application to low-voltage, low-power delta-sigma (DeltaSigma) modulators. Detailed analysis and design optimizations are also provided. Three inverter-based DeltaSigma modulators are implemented for an implantable pacemaker, a CMOS image sensor, and an audio codec. The modulator-I for an implantable pacemaker achieves 65-dB peak-SNDR for 120-Hz bandwidth consuming 0.73 muW with 1.5 V supply. The modulator-II for a CMOS image sensor implemented with 320-channel parallel ADC architecture achieves 63-dB peak-SNDR for 8-kHz bandwidth consuming 5.6 muW for each channel with 1.2-V supply. The modulator-III for an audio codec achieves 81-dB peak-SNDR with 20-kHz bandwidth consuming 36 muW with 0.7-V supply. The prototype DeltaSigma modulators achieved high power efficiency maintaining sufficient performances for practical applications.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To determine the anatomic, hemodynamic, and radiologic characteristics of branch-vessel compromise in patients with aortic dissection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients with aortic dissection were evaluated with aortography (n = 62), intravascular ultrasound (US) (n = 35), and manometry (n = 56). Branch-vessel compromise with ischemia was suspected in 40 of these patients. Radiologic and manometric findings were correlated with clinical findings of ischemia. Femoral artery pulse strength was correlated with access from the respective femoral artery to the true and false lumina of the dissected aorta. RESULTS: Twenty-six of 40 patients suspected of having ischemia had angiographic evidence of branch-vessel compromise, and intravascular US helped identify two types of branch-vessel compromise in them: static (dissection intersected and narrowed the vessel origin) and dynamic (dissection spared the vessel origin, but the dissection flap appeared to compress the true lumen at or above the ori...

Abstract: This study elucidates the mechanism behind persulfate activation by exploring the role of various oxyanions (e.g., peroxymonosulfate, periodate, and peracetate) in two activation systems utilizing iron nanoparticle (nFe0) as the reducing agent and single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electron transfer mediators. Since the tested oxyanions serve as both electron acceptors and radical precursors in most cases, oxidative degradation of organics was achievable through one-electron reduction of oxyanions on nFe0 (leading to radical-induced oxidation) and electron transfer mediation from organics to oxyanions on CNTs (leading to oxidative decomposition involving no radical formation). A distinction between degradative reaction mechanisms of the nFe0/oxyanion and CNT/oxyanion systems was made in terms of the oxyanion consumption efficacy, radical scavenging effect, and EPR spectral analysis.
