TL;DR: In this paper, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 1.3 mm radio wavelength observations of the supermassive black hole candidate at the center of the radio galaxy M87 and the quasar 3C 279, taken during the 2017 April 5-11 observing campaign are presented.
Abstract: We present the calibration and reduction of Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 1.3 mm radio wavelength observations of the supermassive black hole candidate at the center of the radio galaxy M87 and the quasar 3C 279, taken during the 2017 April 5–11 observing campaign. These global very long baseline interferometric observations include for the first time the highly sensitive Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA); reaching an angular resolution of 25 μas, with characteristic sensitivity limits of ~1 mJy on baselines to ALMA and ~10 mJy on other baselines. The observations present challenges for existing data processing tools, arising from the rapid atmospheric phase fluctuations, wide recording bandwidth, and highly heterogeneous array. In response, we developed three independent pipelines for phase calibration and fringe detection, each tailored to the specific needs of the EHT. The final data products include calibrated total intensity amplitude and phase information. They are validated through a series of quality assurance tests that show consistency across pipelines and set limits on baseline systematic errors of 2% in amplitude and 1° in phase. The M87 data reveal the presence of two nulls in correlated flux density at ~3.4 and ~8.3 Gλ and temporal evolution in closure quantities, indicating intrinsic variability of compact structure on a timescale of days, or several light-crossing times for a few billion solar-mass black hole. These measurements provide the first opportunity to image horizon-scale structure in M87.

TL;DR: The results suggest that microRNAs can function as signaling molecules and identify TLR7 as an essential element in a pathway that contributes to the spread of CNS damage.
Abstract: Activation of innate immune receptors by host-derived factors exacerbates CNS damage, but the identity of these factors remains elusive. We uncovered an unconventional role for the microRNA let-7, a highly abundant regulator of gene expression in the CNS, in which extracellular let-7 activates the RNA-sensing Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 and induces neurodegeneration through neuronal TLR7. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from individuals with Alzheimer’s disease contains increased amounts of let-7b, and extracellular introduction of let-7b into the CSF of wild-type mice by intrathecal injection resulted in neurodegeneration. Mice lacking TLR7 were resistant to this neurodegenerative effect, but this susceptibility to let-7 was restored in neurons transfected with TLR7 by intrauterine electroporation of Tlr7(−/−) fetuses. Our results suggest that microRNAs can function as signaling molecules and identify TLR7 as an essential element in a pathway that contributes to the spread of CNS damage.

TL;DR: Each component of such multimodal probes complements the other modalities, and their synergistic materials properties ultimately provide more accurate information in in vitro and in vivo biological systems.
Abstract: Current biomedical imaging techniques including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and computed X-ray tomography (CT) are vital in the diagnosis of various diseases. Each imaging modality has its own merits and disadvantages, and a single technique does not possess all the required capabilities for comprehensive imaging. Therefore, multimodal imaging methods are quickly becoming important tools for state-of-the-art biomedical research and clinical diagnostics and therapeutics. In this Account, we will discuss synergistically integrated nanoparticle probes, which will be an essential tool in multimodal imaging technology. When inorganic nanoparticles are introduced into biological systems, their extremely small size and their exceptional physical and chemical properties make them useful probes for biological diagnostics. Nanoparticle probes can endow imaging techniques with enhanced signal sensitivity, better spatial resolution, and the ability to relay information about ...

TL;DR: The high surface tension forces offered by liquids in nanowire arrays made of Si and Cu can be exploited to increase both the critical heat flux (CHF) and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) by more than 100%.
Abstract: Boiling is a common mechanism for liquid-vapor phase transition and is widely exploited in power generation and refrigeration devices and systems. The efficacy of boiling heat transfer is characterized by two parameters: (a) heat transfer coefficient (HTC) or the thermal conductance; (b) the critical heat flux (CHF) limit that demarcates the transition from high HTC to very low HTC. While increasing the CHF and the HTC has significant impact on system-level energy efficiency, safety, and cost, their values for water and other heat transfer fluids have essentially remained unchanged for many decades. Here we report that the high surface tension forces offered by liquids in nanowire arrays made of Si and Cu can be exploited to increase both the CHF and the HTC by more than 100%.

TL;DR: For example, EggNOG-mapper v2 as mentioned in this paper is a tool for functional annotation based on precomputed orthology assignments, optimized for vast (meta)genomic data sets.
Abstract: Even though automated functional annotation of genes represents a fundamental step in most genomic and metagenomic workflows, it remains challenging at large scales. Here, we describe a major upgrade to eggNOG-mapper, a tool for functional annotation based on precomputed orthology assignments, now optimized for vast (meta)genomic data sets. Improvements in version 2 include a full update of both the genomes and functional databases underlying eggNOG v5, as well as several efficiency enhancements and new features. Most notably, eggNOG-mapper v2 now allows: (i) de novo gene prediction from raw contigs, (ii) built-in pairwise orthology prediction, (iii) fast protein domain discovery, and (iv) automated GFF decoration. eggNOG-mapper v2 is available as a standalone tool or as an online service at http://emapperdev.compgenomics.org.
