Abstract: Using receiver operating characteristics, the authors examined outcome predictors (variables associated with outcome regardless of treatment) and moderators (variables identifying subgroups with differential treatment effectiveness) in the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; MTA). Treatment response was determined using parent- and teacher-reported ADHD and oppositional defiant symptoms, with levels near or within the normal range indicating excellent response. Among 9 baseline child and family characteristics, none predicted but 3 moderated treatment response. In medication management and combined treatments, parental depressive symptoms and severity of child ADHD were associated with decreased rates of excellent response; when these 2 characteristics were present, below-average child IQ was an additional moderator. No predictors or moderators emerged for behavioral and community comparison treatments. The authors discuss conceptual and clinical implications of research on treatment moderators.

Abstract: The sinoatrial node (SAN) is the primary pacemaker of the heart and controls heart rate throughout life. Failure of SAN function due to congenital disease or aging results in slowing of the heart rate and inefficient blood circulation, a condition treated by implantation of an electronic pacemaker. The ability to produce pacemaker cells in vitro could lead to an alternative, biological pacemaker therapy in which the failing SAN is replaced through cell transplantation. Here we describe a transgene-independent method for the generation of SAN-like pacemaker cells (SANLPCs) from human pluripotent stem cells by stage-specific manipulation of developmental signaling pathways. SANLPCs are identified as NKX2-5- cardiomyocytes that express markers of the SAN lineage and display typical pacemaker action potentials, ion current profiles and chronotropic responses. When transplanted into the apex of rat hearts, SANLPCs are able to pace the host tissue, demonstrating their capacity to function as a biological pacemaker.

Abstract: Mass balances of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolvedinorganic carbon (DIC) based on stream and precipitation inputs andoutflows were measured for seven unproductive lakes in central Ontariobetween 1981 and 1989. Net annual CO2 evasion occurred in sixof the seven study lakes with minor net invasion in the seventh. Atmosphericinvasion might have been significant at certain times of the year, particularlyduring the growing season. Net evasion rates were greater than DIC loadingrates, indicating partial mineralization of the terrestrially-derived DOC in thelakes. A steady state mass balance model adequately described the variationin DOC retention between lakes. Net annual carbon accumulation of forestcommunities based on estimates of net ecosystem production may beoverestimated because of significant export of carbon to lakes via streamsand groundwater, particularly in catchments with extensive peatlands.
