Abstract: In the policy discourses of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and European Commission (EC), modern biotechnology and the life sciences are represented as an emerging “bioeconomy” in which the latent value underpinning biological materials and products offers the opportunity for sustainable economic growth. This articulation of modern biotechnology and economic development is an emerging scholarly field producing numerous “bio-concepts.” Over the last decade or so, there have been a number of attempts to theorize this relationship between biotechnologies and their capitalization. This article highlights some of the underlying ambiguities in these conceptualizations, especially in the fetishization of everything “bio.” We offer an alternative view of the bioeconomy by rethinking the theoretical importance of several key economic and financial processes.

Abstract: The area of automatic speaker recognition has been dominated by systems using only short-term, low-level acoustic information, such as cepstral features. While these systems have indeed produced very low error rates, they ignore other levels of information beyond low-level acoustics that convey speaker information. Recently published work has shown examples that such high-level information can be used successfully in automatic speaker recognition systems and has the potential to improve accuracy and add robustness. For the 2002 JHU CLSP summer workshop, the SuperSID project (http://www.clsp.jhu.edu/ws2002/groups/supersid/) was undertaken to exploit these high-level information sources and dramatically increase speaker recognition accuracy on a defined NIST evaluation corpus and task. The paper provides an overview of the structure, data, task, tools, and accomplishments of this project. Wide ranging approaches using pronunciation models, prosodic dynamics, pitch and duration features, phone streams, and conversational interactions were explored and developed. We show how these novel features and classifiers indeed provide complementary information and can be fused together to drive down the equal error rate on the 2001 NIST extended data task to 0.2% - a 71% relative reduction in error over the previous state of the art.

Abstract: Obesity is commonly associated with the development of insulin resistance and diabetes in humans and rodents. Insulin resistance and diabetes are observed in lipoatrophic individuals or rodent models of lipoatrophy. Here we focus on the role of leptin, the product of the obesity (ob) gene, in the development of insulin resistance and diabetes associated with obesity and lipoatrophy. We review the reported effects of leptin on whole body glucose metabolism and compare and contrast these with direct effects on skeletal muscle, fat and liver. This summary of paradoxical observations on the effects of leptin on glucose homeostasis and the ability of leptin to induce or improve insulin resistance suggests that a complex interplay exists between direct peripheral and centrally mediated effects of the hormone. Evidence suggesting that leptin acts as a mediator of insulin release from pancreatic beta cells is reviewed. Finally, intracellular signaling mechanisms stimulated by both leptin and insulin are discussed, with potential points of cross-talk suggested.

Abstract: This paper introduces the three-dimensional Hamburg Model of the Neutral and Ionized Atmosphere (HAMMONIA), which treats atmospheric dynamics, radiation, and chemistry interactively for the height range from the earth’s surface to the thermosphere (approximately 250 km) It is based on the latest version of the ECHAM atmospheric general circulation model of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, which is extended to include important radiative and dynamical processes of the upper atmosphere and is coupled to a chemistry module containing 48 compounds The model is applied to study the effects of natural and anthropogenic climate forcing on the atmosphere, represented, on the one hand, by the 11-yr solar cycle and, on the other hand, by a doubling of the present-day concentration of carbon dioxide The numerical experiments are analyzed with the focus on the effects on temperature and chemical composition in the mesopause region Results include a temperature response to the
