An extension of Poincaré's last geometric theorem

Abstract: The Crowned Memoir b y POINCAR~, ~>Le probl~me de trois corps et les 6quations de la dynamique>>, in volume 13 of the Acta mathematica contained the first great attack upon the non-integrable problems of dynamics. Under the direction of Professor MITTAG-LEFFLER, the Acta mathematica has had many remarkable articles, but perhaps none of larger scientific importance than this one. I ts many ideas, in which the periodic motions took a central part, led naturally to POINCAR~'S later dynamical researches. In a highly interesting paper, >>Sur nn th6or~me de g6om6trie>), published shortly before his death in volume 33 of the Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo, POINCA~ showed that a certain geometric theorem (proved by him in particular cases) would carry with it the answer to some Outstanding questions concerning the periodic motions. The peculiarity of the method by which I obtained a general demonstration of its t ruth soon afterwards, 1 and the dynamical origin of the theorem itself, have suggested the extension given here. In thus responding to the kind invitation of Professor I~SRLUND, I desire to render homage to Professor MiTTAG-LEFFLER, especially because of the inspiring tradition which he has established for the Acta mathematica.

Sur les familles de fonctions analytiques de plusieurs variables

Abstract: I. C'est un fait bien connu que l'dtude des fonctions analytiques de plusieurs variables complexes est beaucoup moins avancge que celle des fonctions d'une seule variable ~ cause des difficultds beaucoup plus grandes qu'on y rencontre e~ d'un ordre tout ~ fair particulier: circonstances qui font que nombre de propositions vraies des fonctions d'une seule variable ne s'dtendent pas ou s'dtendent real aux fonctions de plusieurs variables. Si l'on envisage notamment l'ensemble des points singuliers d'une fonction analytique d'une variable, on sait qu'il peut ~tre absolument quelconque, contenir des points isolds, des continus lindaires ou superficiels, libres de routes restrictions. Des th4or~mes g~n~raux comme ceh i de M. hIittag-Leffler par exemple ou celui qui concerne les ddveloppements en s~rie de polynbmes ou de fonctions rationnelles donnent en effet le moyen de construire des expressions analytiques reprdsentant des fonctions holomorphes en tout point de certains domaines donn~s s priori, les points fronti~res de ces domaines dtant des points singuliers de ces fonctions. 11 n'y a rien de pareil pour les fonctions uniformes de plusieurs variables. Les travaux de nombreux g~om~tres, depuis WV.~RST~ASS jusqu' ~ hi. M. F. HARTOGS j e t E. E. L~w ~, ont montrg par exemple que les pSles ne pouvaient ~tre isolds mais formaient des continus analytiques, que les points singuliers essentiels, jamais isolgs, ~taient
