Abstract: Pigs weighing 7 to 102 kg were fed a diet containing 0.17% sodium n-butyrate. The diet increased the average daily body mass gain of pigs by 23.5%. Due to its dietetic effect, feed consumption increased by 8.9%. However, owing to the higher feed conversion, specific feed utilization was reduced by 11.8%. The experimental diet markedly reduced the percentile proportion of coliform bacteria in the ileum as compared to Lactobacillus ssp.: it decreased the coliform count and increased the counts of Lactobacillus spp. The diet increased the length of ileal microvilli and the depth of caecal crypts. It raised the concentration of immunoreactive insulin in the blood plasma. The feed supplemented with sodium butyrate did not alter adversely the clinical indices tested. It reduced feed costs by 9% and increased the returns from sales by 13%. As the additive is normally produced by microbial fermentation in the large intestine, it is not alien to the body. Sodium butyrate exerted its favourable effect in 3.6- to 24.2-fold lower concentrations than the organic acids (citric acid, fumaric acid, propionic acid) used earlier. With respect to its favourable biological and economic effect, sodium n-butyrate can be recommended for use in pig feeding as a growth promoter.

Abstract: The analysis of Pseudorabies (Aujeszky's disease) virus (PrV) at the molecular level has not only considerably increased the knowledge of PrV genes and gene products but has also had a major impact on the development of new vaccines and eradication strategies. So far, ca. 40 PrV genes have been sequenced which constitute approx. 60% of the PrV genome. Analysis of attenuated live vaccine viruses resulted in the identification of gene products that determine viral virulence and neurotropism which include virus-encoded enzymes, membrane glycoproteins, and protein(s) involved in virus particle formation. Based on these results the first genetically engineered live viral vaccine licensed for use is represented by an attenuated PrV mutant. Studies on viral surface glycoproteins led to the elucidation of some of their functions during the infectious cycle proving their role in attachment, penetration, and release of virions. The finding that some of the glycoproteins are nonessential for viral replication and can be deleted from the virus provided the basis for new eradication programs based on differentiation between infected and vaccinated animals. The recent isolation of PrV mutants unable to spread between animals opens up new ways for construction of safe PrV-based vector vaccines. Taken together, PrV can serve as an excellent example where molecular biological research has a direct impact on the practical aspects of controlling, and eventually eradicating an important animal disease.

The frequency of acrosomal defects was lower in the treated groups than in the control. These re- sults indicate that RAR treatment can improve the effects of ram semen preserva- tion. Conservation of the fertilising capacity of fresh semen for the longest pos- sible time is essential in the practice of artificial insemination for all farm animal species including sheep. A basic problem with the conservation of ram semen is the high unsaturated fatty acid content of the membrane of spermatozoa. These unsaturated fatty acids tend to bind oxygen, which results in the formation of numerous peroxide bonds. These undesired peroxidation processes result in dis- ruption of the sperm cell membrane and consequently impair the fertilising ca- pacity of semen.

Abstract: Oxidative stress is a state related to increased cellular damage caused by oxygen and oxygen-derived free radicals known as reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is a serious condition, as ROS and their metabolites attack DNA, lipids and proteins, alter enzymatic systems and cell signalling pathways, producing irreparable alterations, cell death and necrosis. While small amounts of ROS have been shown to be required for several functions of spermatozoa, their excessive levels can negatively impact the quality of spermatozoa and impair their overall fertilising capacity. These questions have recently attracted the attention of the scientific community; however, research aimed at exploring the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants associated with male fertility is still at its initial stages. This review summarises the current facts available in this field and intends to stimulate interest in basic and clinical research, especially in the development of effective methods for the diagnosis and therapy of semen damage caused by oxidative stress.

Abstract: Clinical observations of Babesia canis infection in 63 dogs during a 1-year period are summarised, demonstrating the pathogenicity of the Babesia strain endemic in Hungary. Most patients had babesiosis in the spring and autumn, correlating with the seasonal activity of ticks. Male animals appeared in higher numbers, probably due to an overrepresentation of outdoor dogs. Uncomplicated babesiosis was diagnosed in 32 cases. The disease affected dogs of any age in this study. Symptoms were similar to those published from other parts of the world: lethargy, fever, splenomegaly, pallor, icterus, haemoglobinuria and presence of ticks were the most common observations. Thrombocytopenia, lymphopenia and neutropenia were frequent haemogram changes. Imidocarb appeared to be highly effective in eliminating the Babesia infection. Thirty-one animals demonstrated babesiosis with complications. Most Rottweilers (7/9) developed complicated disease. Old age was a risk factor for multiple complications. Multiple organ manifestations had poor prognosis. Hepatopathy (44%), pancreatitis (33%), acute renal failure (ARF; 31%) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC; 24%) were frequent complications, while immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA; 10%), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS; 6%) and cerebral babesiosis (3%) were rarely observed. There was a significant difference between the mean age of dogs having uncomplicated disease, babesiosis with a single complication and babesiosis with multiple complications (3.4, 4.8 and 8.6 years, respectively, p < 0.001). The recovery rate (78, 68 and 25%, respectively, p = 0.005) and mortality rate (3, 21 and 67%, respectively, p < 0.001) also tended to differ significantly in these groups. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and DIC are two possible pathways leading to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in babesiosis.
