Le couturier et sa griffe : contribution à une théorie de la magie

Abstract: The "couturier" and his "signature" : contribution to a theory of magic The field of luxury goods production in which high fashion has its place, is structured around the opposition between orthodoxy and heterodoxy, between consecrated art and avant-garde art. Because of this opposition, high fashion presents a functional similarity to the structure of fractions (and secondarily, age groups) of the dominating class which predisposes it to keep ahead of the expectations of its clientele : the "young", "inexpensive", "modern", "franck", "intellectual" style is in contrast with the "luxurious", "traditional", "conservative", "bourgeois" style. The succession of a couturier poses problems permitting analysis of the sort of social alchemy realized by the couturier when he imposes his "signature", which can radically modify the social quality of a product without changing its physical nature. The field of fashion betrays with particular transparency certain of the mechanisms characteristic of what can be called an economy of symbolic exchanges. What is described as the crisis of haute couture could be only one sign among others of a restructuring of this mechanism, linked to the apparition of new tokens of distinction (and of new fractions), less naively ostentatious and less insolently luxurious than those couturiers traditionally offered.

Abstract: EnglishLanguage fetishism Language fetishism is based upon double developmental amnesia : amnesia in regard to the social conditions which produce linguistic distinction as well as the belief in the absolute value and entire legitimacy of this "natural distinction" ; amnesia in regard to the social conditions which generate conform producers and recepters and, by this, disregard of the system of differences which is fundamental to the profits of distinction offered by the mastery of the legitimate language. Linguistics mask the question of the social conditions of obtaining legitimate competence in language. This does not mean however that linguistics do not reply to this question. One of two explanations is usually offered : either this competence is described as common "treasure" which can be appropriated by particular person under unspecified conditions ; or else under the cover of the criteria of "grammaticality", linguistic competence becomes that which is measured only by grammarians. Linguistics tend to reduce the universe of different utilizations to that of only one particular utilization of language the "correct utilization" ; that is to say, the dominant utilization as well as the utilization to which the dominant members of society put this language. Because this language is not clearly recognized as that of the dominant members of society it becomes all the more legitimate. In this way linguistics incorporate within scientific theory the social operation of universalizing the particular and naturalizing the arbitrary which is the source of legitimacy of the "correct utilization". Thus this particular means of expression is seen to be universally accessible and required. The social conditions of legitimate language production are fundamental in understanding the properties and specific effects of language. Moreover, it is necessary to understand the social mechanisms which bring about the same effects by guaranteeing the reproduction of the structure of distribution between classes of the knowledge and the use of the legitimate language. These same mechanisms guarantee at the same time the reproduction of the market in which legitimate linguistic products receive their full value and also guarantee the need for these written or spoken products and the need for those who produce them : writers (private or public) or speakers. L'ontologie politique de Martin Heidegger

Abstract: EnglishThe political ontology of Martin Heidegger. Philosophical discourse, like any other form of expression, is the product of trans. The language of Heidegger is an accomplished product of euphemistic expression which allows the appearance of political phantasms and compulsions within the limits of the philosophical definition of the expressable. This can be accomplished, for instance, by inserting such taboo words as "Fursorge" into network of relationships in such a way that they become irrecognizable. By imposing a certain reverence, philosophical discourse practices form of symbolic violence. This reverence imposed by philosophical discourse is correlary to its acknowledgement as a product of philosophical endeavour. The resultant symbolic violence supposes the existence of the institutionalized circle of col lective misunderstanding. More precisely this circle is the set of social mechanisms which insures the regeneration of the corps of philosophy professors and of their ethico-political dispositions. Having once established the philosophical alchemy, one can define the expressive intent of work by comparing it with the less euphemistical discourses of the "revolutionary conservatives" (Junger, Niekisch, Muller van den Bruck, etc.). In the same way, one can determine the laws of transformation to which the philosophical field of time (and, in particular, the confrontation with the neo-Kantians of Marburg) subjects this particular expressive intent. The works of Heidegger thus appear to be the product of a meeting between a position tobe taken within the field of philosophy and a system of ethico-political dispositions associated with particular social trajectory. Thusly, one can reconstitute the social development of the political ontology of Martin Heidegger, a political mood transformed by philosophical alchemy into ontology. What sense is there in considering as identical the primary school teacher of 1880 and the primary school teacher of 1930, or of 1974 ? Is the son of a primary school teacher really a "teacher's son" in the sense that he is himself a teacher ? Doesn't the nominal identity hide the real disparity ? The dialectic of title and job is a manifestation of the dialectic of de-classifying and re-classifying that is one aspect of the class struggle.

The analysis of the process of the canonization of the cartoon is the opportunity to observe the modifications which the establishing of a specifie culture -of a relatively autonomous field, of a mechanism (reviews meetings, prizes, editors, institutions of learning, etc.) introduces in the producers'characteristics, in the formal properties of the works and in the type of relationship which the producers maintain toward the works.

The System of adjectives by which the professorial judgement is expressed ("vulgar", "mediocre", "serious", "sincere", "subtil", "cultivated", etc.) operates like an instrument of social classification. The results of this analysis are confirmed by the analysis of the necrologies of alumnus of an important college, the "Ecole normale superieure". This represents the final professorial judgement. The categories of university thought and judgement which transpose social classification into the unexpected form of scholastic evaluation function throughout a professional career. Abstract: The teaching of agriculture and the symbolic domination of the peasantry An instrument of action over the peasants, the teaching of agriculture could constitute for different fractions of the dominant class a means of maintaining their own definitions of the peasantry. Thus the rural primary school, which took the place of formal agricultural learning for most of the peasants, contributed at the end of the 19th century to transforming the peasantry by opposing the "enlightened farmer" to the "backward peasant". The teaching of agriculture could equally be taken as an attempt to resolve indirectly, through the interposed peasantry, the urban "social question". The idealized image of bucolic and peasant virtues, which the intellectuals and artists produced and which the school fed back to the peasants, was formed in the 19th century from the denunciation of the city's miseries : it was a euphemized expression of the fear engendered by the "worker peril". By producing a corps of professionals from the framework of the peasantry, the teaching of agriculture could have the effect of installing a new type of relationship of domination between the peasantry and the dominating class.

Abstract: Sexuelle Arbeitsteilung und Arbeitsteilung der Herrschaft. Dieser Text ist ein Beitrag zur Sozialgeschichte der herrschenden Klasse in Brasilien und besteht aus mehreren Hypothesen, welche sich stufenweise aus vergleichenden Studien der Biographien und Memoiren von Schriftstellern ergeben. Der Werdegang eines Schriftstellers unter der Republik Velha (1889-1930) erscheint als Produkt einer Umwandlungstrategie, welche durch die Verminderung des Ausgangkapitals der Familie erzwungen wurde. Der Erfolg dieser Strategie hangt zum grossen Teil von der Verwendung des Rest- kapitals ab, insbesonders von der des Kapitals an gesellschaftlichen Verbindungen und an sozialem Ansehen. Bewirkt wird diese Umwandlung in den Schriftstellerberuf meist von einer vermittelnden "sozialen Verweiblichung", welche ein Produkt der Erfahrung des Verfalles der Familie sein kann, oder aber als Ant wort auf die physische Unmoglichkeit die mannlichen Rollen auszufuhren verstanden werden kann. Die Um wandlungsstrategien waren nur dadurch erfolgreich weil sie zeitlich mit der Entwicklung einer intellek tuellen Burokratie und insbesonders der Presse, zu sammenfielen.

Abstract: EnglishThe unclassable farmer Property owners owned by their property ; bosses who only boss themselves ; workers who, instead of selling their work, sell the products of their work ; farmers are never completly different from, nor entirely similar to the other social categories in relation to which one tries to define them. As farmer demonstrations have shown, the relationship of domination, which exists ordinarily between classes, exists in another sense within the farmer himself, dividing his time, his activities, and, in sum, dividing him against himself. L'expansion et la crise de la production littéraire

Abstract: EnglishThe expansion and crisis in the literary field between 1865 and 1900 A quantitative study of the literary market in France between 1865 and 1900 has shown a tremendous increase in the number of titles produced, the quantity of best sellers printed, and the size of the reading public. But towards the end of the 1880's and throughout the 1890's, this expansion gave way to a crisis of overproduction. This expansion can be explained by such social transformations related to the industrial revolution such as increased secondary education. The crisis itself is a result of the expansion ; too many intellectuals drawn into this market wrote too many books for the market to absorbe. The reading public ceased to increase at the same high rate. The number of person with secondary education levelled off. While production slowed, the number of writers continued to increase. Since the more lucrative formes (novels and plays) were those in greatest difficulty, the social situation of the writer declined all the more. This crisis accounts for the particular character of the field of literary endeavour during this period : the splintering of groups, the manifestos, the pole mies, the duals, the aberrant strategies, the conversions and reconversions of a religious, literary, political, or social nature, and, during the Dreyfus affair, even the birth of the "intellectual", claiming his own political autonomy. Aber auf dieses Wachstum folgt Ende der 80er Jahre und wahrend der 90er Jahre eine Krise der Uberproduktion. Das Wachstum erklart sich durch die industrielle Revolution verursachten Veranderungen, insbesondere den Ausbau des hoheren Schulwesens. Die Krise entspringt direkt dem Wachstumsprozess : zu viele Intellektuelle sind vom literarischen Markt angezogen, eine zu hohe Anzahl von Buchern erscheinen auf einem saturierten Markt, nach der Stagnation des hoheren Schulwesens wachst das Lesepublikum nicht mehr in derselben Geschwindigkeit, die Anzahl der Schriftsteller wachst, wahrend die Produktion bereits zuruckgeht. Die soziale Lage der Schriftsteller verschlechtert sich sosehr, dass die bestbezahlten Sparten (Romane, Theater) den meisten Schwierigkeiten begegnen. Diese Krise erklart die Besonderheiten des Uterarischen Marktes dieser Epoche die Multipikation der Kunstlergruppen der Manifeste der Polemiken der religiosen literarischen politischen und sozialen Bekehrungen und Konvertierungen und ebenso die Geburt des "Intellektuellen", der aus Anlass der Dreyfus Affaire seine politische Autonomie fordert.

Abstract: Macht und Ohnmacht. Intellectuelles Vorhaben und Sexualitat in Amiels Tagebuch. Es scheint, dass es in den sozialen und mentalen Strukturen eine durch die Unterscheidung in Herr schende und Beherrschte sozial definierte Ubereinstimmung gibt ; und zwar zwischen der biologisch und sozial definierten Geschlechtertrennung einerseits und der Trennung der herrschenden Klasse in industrielle (dominierende( und intellektuelle (dominierte) Frak- tionen andererseits. Diese Hypothese wurde das System von sich widersprechenden und bereinstimmenden Elementen der Wertvorstellungen erklaren, das sich all gemein Im Kinde herausbildet, sofern es nicht jenen Klassenfraktionen angehort, welche nur uber kulturelles capital verfugen.Diese Elemente sind einerseits die vaterlichen Werte, die sexuellen Werte der Mann-lichkeit die sozial vorherrschenden Werte des Burgers im Sinne Webers oder Sombarts und anderer seits die mutterlichen, fraulichen und intellektuellen Werte. Die intellektuelle Investition konnte also in gewissen Situationen dazu tendieren, sich von den vaterlichen Werten (mannlichen) zu entfernen und die Verbindung zur Mutter und ihren Werten (fraulichen) zu verstarken. Ebenso konnte die Uberinvestition in die Mutter die intellektuelle Investition verstarken. Die klinische Studie des "Falles Amiel" erlaubt es,diese Hypothese zu testen und die dialektische Verbindung zwischen den biologischen und sozialen Determinanten zu analysieren. Sie erlaubt die Identifizierung eines sozialen psychologischen und somalischen "Syndroms". Dieses tritt bei Amiel in einer paradig matischen Form auf ist aber wahrscheinlich untrenn bar an die soziale Situation eines Intellektuellen gebunden.

Grammaire générale et grammaire générative

Abstract: General grammar and generative grammar. Can one consider as Chomsky suggests that the general grammar of Port-Royal is fore-runner of ge nerative grammar? To resolve this problem one must compare work with the texts that it pro pounds to explain. In consequence one can see that Chomsky based this work only on those chosen exam ples for which the two grammars give the same results. Taking into consideration all the chapters of the works of Port-Royal in question, one is led to believe that they obey other principles than those of generative grammar since they do not originated in formal analysis. There may therefore exist Cartesian linguistics but it can not be considered an ancestor of Chomsky's work.

Abstract: Die Hochpreisung der Kunstwerke. Dieser Artikel untersucht die Illokutions- und Perlokutionswerte eines Textes der "Kunstliteratur". Als besonderes Beispiel dient der Katalog der Kubismusausstellung in Paris und Bordeaux im Jahre 1973. Der Artikel soll dabei aufzeigen, dass der Ausstellungskatalog ein mittem ist, das dazu dient, eine bestimmte Vorstellung und ein Bild des Kunstwerke zu legitimieren und zwingend darzustellen, wenn eine Kunstperiode geographish, historish und politisch abgeschlossen ist. Diese Bild und dieseVorstellung dient realen politischen Absichten, verleugnet diese aber gloichseitig und lonkt sie zum Nutzen der realen und symbolishen Interessen einer herrschenden Gruppe um, die aus den verschidenen "Beamten" der Kunstinstitutionen besteht (Museen, Kunstgalerien, private Sammlungen, kunstkritik und Kunstgeschichte).
