TL;DR: In this paper, a study was conducted to second-year Early Childhood Education students of Pangantucan Bukidnon Community College during the first term of the academic year 2020-2021.
Abstract: Mathematics is an essential subject in the Philippines Department of Education (DepEd) K-12 curriculum that requires critical thinking abilities because it is crucial in everyday life along with the growth of other sciences. However, the majority of Filipino students had difficulty understanding mathematical concepts that require higher-order cognitive skills. As a result, students' mathematical process abilities, such as critical thinking, must be strengthened. This study aimed to develop students' critical thinking in mathematics in an online-POGIL environment. The study was conducted to second-year Early Childhood Education students of Pangantucan Bukidnon Community College during the first term of the academic year 2020-2021. It utilized a quasi-experimental Pretest-Post Test Control Group research design. A validated 6-item teacher-made test for critical thinking skills with a reliability coefficient of 0.752 was used to measure students’ critical thinking performance with a rubric scale adapted from St. Petersburg College. Mean and standard deviation was used to evaluate students’ pretest and posttest scores in the critical thinking skills test. A one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the significant effect of O-POGIL on students’ critical thinking skills. The findings showed that O-POGIL motivates students to actively participate in activities and improves their learning. Furthermore, students exposed to O-POGIL showed a substantial improvement, demonstrated on communication, analysis, and problem-solving in mathematics. To improve students' critical thinking skills, it is advised to employ the O-POGIL teaching methodology and design resources based on the O-POGIL construct. Other 21st-century process skills that O-POGIL could build and enhance can be researched further.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored immediate stakeholders' opinions about the pervasive practice of Multi-School Teaching (MST) among public secondary school teachers in Uganda and discovered a multitude of pedagogical dilemmas faced by MST teachers.
Abstract: In response to the ever growing pedagogical ineffectiveness amidst financial distress among teachers in Uganda, the study explored immediate stakeholders’ opinions about the pervasive practice of Multi-School Teaching (MST) among public secondary school teachers in Uganda. The study specifically sought to identify the prevalent forms of pedagogical dilemmas which the MST teachers face; explore how these teachers navigate through the dilemmas; and explore immediate stakeholders’ views on how to forestall the problem. It draws on majorly qualitative and some quantitative data generated from 189 respondents including the teachers, head teachers, directors of studies and students. Data was generated from questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Analysis of data involved both thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. The study’s findings discovered a multitude of pedagogical dilemmas faced by MST teachers. However, teachers revealed a number of pragmatic strategies they use to navigate through pedagogical dilemmas. In order to remedy the problems associated with MST, both containing and forestalling opinions were exposed. The opinions offered were only necessary but not sufficient in overcoming the existing pedagogical and financial tribulations among teachers. Thus, collaboration between the Government and immediate education stakeholders was recommended. Besides, an intense level of commitment (in terms of time) and view of teaching as a vocation was also recommended among MST teachers. Lastly, basing on plausible input of MST to teachers’ work-income balance, another study about the influence of MST on teachers’ pedagogical performance is imperative before focusing on the fight against the practice of MST.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the situation of meaningful participation, accountability, and transparency in the research area, and showed that even after the state's reconstruction, the local governments have not severed the governance practice satisfactorily.
Abstract: Governance practice has become a central issue of the development process since the historical evolution of civilizations. It has counted as the heart of the process for public administration and organizations. The limited literature on the research entitled “The Status of Governance Practice" has shown the clear gap in the literature on how the local groups implement and practice good governance policies and existing practices and gaps between policy and practice in the Nepalese context. Following the interpretative paradigm with a qualitative approach, the research analyzes the existing practice, the situation of participation, and the gap between policy and existing practice. The primary data has been gathered from seven selected informants of Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City through judgmental sampling, and in-depth interviews and observation have been adopted as data collection tools. The study has explored the situation of meaningful participation, accountability, and transparency in the research area. The study has shown that even after the state's reconstruction, the local governments have not severed the governance practice satisfactorily. However, Nepal's restructuring process has increased local people's access to local government, but local people's meaningful participation in developmental activities, accountability, and transparency are still unsatisfactory. The finding has indicated the essentiality of good governance at the local level for local power. The federal government needs to monitor the provincial government and provincial to local government for reasonable control. The study has become an implication for policymakers and further researchers.

TL;DR: This paper argued for the complementarity of virtue ethics, which emphasises the interrelatedness of agents and commitment to the professional code of conduct and other institutionalised social values, and related teacher education management implications are highlighted.
Abstract: This article’s point of departure is the normative position that nurturing the ethical behaviour of teacher trainees requires something beyond masterly of a professional code of ethics. Although a codified professional code of conduct, as a form of deontological ethics, might be helpful in ushering teacher trainees into the teaching profession by explaining expected norms of behaviour, it is associated with certain critical weaknesses. This article argues for the complementarity of virtue ethics, which emphasises the interrelatedness of agents and commitment to the professional code of conduct and other institutionalised social values. Related teacher education management implications are highlighted.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the Faculty Change Orientation Scale (FCOS) to identify Saudi Arabian schools' openness to change in light of Saudi Vision 2030, and found that teachers in Saudi Arabia are open to change, based on their gender, educational stage, the type of school they taught at and their experience.
Abstract: This study aimed to identify Saudi Arabian schools’ openness to change in light of Saudi Vision 2030. The study analyses significant differences in the perception of Saudi schools’ openness to change among Saudi teachers, based on their gender, educational stage, the type of school they taught at, and their experience. We used the Faculty Change Orientation Scale (FCOS) to analyse data from 383 teachers in 29 schools in Saudi Arabia. Results indicated that the practice levels of faculty and principal openness to change are high. This means that Saudi teachers predominantly agree that their schools are open to change. The results further revealed that the gender and school type variables had no significant impact on Saudi teachers’ perceptions. However, the experience and educational stage variables showed significant differences. These findings contribute to our understanding of the effects of the Saudi Vision 2030 within the educational system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study was carried out to examine farmers' coping strategies and the determinants of their choice of specific coping strategies to food insecurity in selected agro-ecological zones in Kitui County.
Abstract: A study was carried out to examine farmers’ coping strategies and the determinants of their choice of specific coping strategies to food insecurity in selected agro-ecological zones in Kitui County. A total of 341 households were selected from four different agro-ecological zones: semi-humid, transitional semi-humid to semi- arid, semi-arid and arid zones. The results indicated that use of off-farm income, selling livestock to buy food, reducing number of meals per day, selling family assets and seeking off-farm employment in urban areas were the most common coping strategies adopted by farmers in the study area. Further, there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.01) in the farmers’ use of off-income to buy food, food assistance for assets programs, relying on relief food, selling livestock to buy food, selling forest products, reducing the number of meals per day and moving herds from one place to another across the four agro-ecological zones. Multivariate probit regression model analysis showed that different socio-economic characteristics had a varying influence on the farmers’ choice of specific coping strategies. The study therefore recommends that interventions by state and non-state actors aimed at enhancing households’ ability to cope with climate variability and extreme events related food shortages should be informed by household’s specific socio-economic characteristics that influence the coping strategy in question in specific agro-ecological zones.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the different ethical dilemmas faced by secondary school teachers in Rubaga Division (Kampala - Uganda) and found that teachers encounter a multitude of ethical dilemma and apply a variety of both professional and odd strategies to navigate through them.
Abstract: Motivated by the desire to explain increased misconduct among teachers in Uganda, the study sought to explore the different ethical dilemmas faced by secondary school teachers in Rubaga Division (Kampala - Uganda). More specifically, the study sought to find out the kind of ethical dilemmas faced by the teachers; to assess teachers’ use of available legal frameworks to address the dilemmas; and, finally, to find out how teachers navigate through the dilemmas. The study used a descriptive case study design, and employed both a self-administered questionnaire and an interview guide as instruments. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Findings revealed that teachers indeed encounter a multitude of ethical dilemmas. However, available legal frameworks are rarely used to solve the dilemmas or, if used, they are found to be quite irrelevant. Lastly, it was discovered that teachers apply a variety of both professional and odd strategies to navigate through the dilemmas. The study concluded that teaching being dynamic, teachers cannot operate without encountering ethical dilemmas: forewarned is fore guarded. Secondly, though necessary, external legislation (laws and policies) can only constitute the necessary but not the sufficient condition for smoothly navigating through ethical complexities. Lastly, ethical dilemmas ultimately call for more strongly formed and informed consciences (internal legislation) rooted on a strong moral compass such as virtue ethics. Educational administration and management implications are also discussed.

Abstract: This study aimed to explore the teacher's stress among public and private colleges brought by the COVID-19 Pandemic which was identified in China last December 2019 and has spread around the world. The participants of the research consisted of 11 teachers in the public and 11 teachers in private schools. The data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis method and divided into themes, sub-themes, and codes. Revealed in the study was that teachers in the public and private tertiary schools experience stress from the different demands at work, specifically on workload in terms of number of classes online per day, the number of students in the Google classroom for large classes, number of hours spent online in correcting students activities and outputs. The fact that teachers need a strong support system now more than ever and it is important to stay positive and reflect on what the teachers can learn during this time about instructional innovation and transformation. Besides, recommendations have been put forward that online teaching will be effectively implemented shortly along with teachers’ significant training. Teachers have had to deal with symptoms and causes of psychological issues from the start of the pandemic. The lockdown and the travel restrictions changed the dimensions of the teaching profession, as schools had to close to deal with the threat of the pandemic. The teaching situation, therefore, has been grim over the years with less focus on how it affects the teachers. This study, therefore, used a sample of 22 teachers from public and private schools to select teachers from all sides of the teaching sector. They were given a questionnaire, which helped to determine and measure anxiety, stress, and depression. The outcome and discussion proved that teachers have indeed suffered from the pandemic and show a high percentage of stress and depression. There are however other variables such as job stability, which formed the basis for including both private and public college teachers, age, and gender of the teachers. This paper advocate for the protection and safeguarding of the teachers' mental welfare and helps maintain the standards and quality of teaching for the benefit of the students and the teachers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of the PEDE Productive Failure Model on developing students' creative thinking ability in mathematics in the new normal was investigated. And the authors found that students who were exposed to PEDe performed significantly better in terms of creative thinking abilities post test score.
Abstract: Students’ creative thinking ability is essential to be developed in Mathematics because it can help students solve everyday life problems. This study aimed to determine the impact of the Posing-Exposing-Doing-Evaluating (PEDE) Productive Failure model on developing students’ creative thinking ability in mathematics in the new normal. The study was conducted at Diplahan National High School of the Division of Zamboanga Sibugay to Grade-11 students enrolled for the school year 2020-2021. The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The experimental group was exposed to PEDE Productive Failure Model and the control group was exposed to the Conventional Method. Multiple solution tasks were used to measure students’ level of creative thinking ability. A teacher-made test composed of 4-item open-ended questions with a rubric scale that measures mathematical creative thinking ability was the main instrument used in the study. The mean, standard deviation, and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used to analyze the data collected. The analysis revealed that students exposed to PEDE Productive Failure Model performed significantly better in terms of creative thinking ability posttest score. Researchers recommend that Mathematics teachers may use PEDE Productive Failure as a modular learning approach in the new normal to develop creative thinking ability in Mathematics. Teachers might also incorporate activities into their Mathematics modules that demand students to present various clearly defined solutions to foster students' creative potential.

TL;DR: This paper analyzed the extent to which the interest of women has been represented by the women who have increasingly held very influential political and administrative positions in Ghana and found that women in leadership have demonstrated a great zeal for women emancipation.
Abstract: This paper interrogates the efficacy of women in authority and how it impacts the lives of underprivileged women in society. The hypothesis suggests that women in authority better represent the interest of vulnerable women and children if given opportunity at the decision-making levels in a country’s body politic. Feminist groups who champion this supposition argue, that the story of women has long been told by men and hence, there is the need for women to tell their own story. But how have women in leadership demonstrated their capacity to issues that reflect the interest of women? Using primary and secondary data, the authors analyzed the extent to which the interest of women has been represented by the women who have increasingly held very influential political and administrative positions in Ghana. The paper conceptualized the interest of women minimally to include alleged sexual demands as a quid pro quo for employment or positions, accusation of witchcraft, maternity leave with pay and inheritance. The findings suggest that, women in leadership have demonstrated a great zeal for women’s emancipation. However, there is more room for improvement to convince the ordinary Ghanaian woman that women in authority adequately represent the interest of all women especially the poor and vulnerable in society. The authors recommend a united front among women in academia, CSOs and the media to mount ‘pressure’ on women occupying influential positions to prioritize resolving politico-socio-economic challenges that confront vulnerable women in the Ghanaian society.

TL;DR: The current body of evidence does not substantiate antithrombotic treatment for managing thromboembolism in the setting of COVID-19 and physicians must take preventive measures until the availability of definitive treatment.
Abstract: Background: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) potentially deteriorates the immune system and triggers prothrombotic states in many patient scenarios. Clinical studies so far do not stratify the risk of thromboembolism in COVID-19 cases. Objective: This systematic review investigates the risks of thromboembolism and outcomes of anticoagulation therapy in COVID-19 patients. Methods: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify relevant studies assessing thromboembolism and anticoagulant therapy in COVID-19 patients. Study Selection, Data Extraction, and Synthesis: Two reviewers screened the titles and abstracts of the included studies in the context of COVID-19, thrombosis, and anticoagulant therapy. The reviewers also ascertained the elimination of duplicate articles. Results: We included eight studies based on the thromboembolism predisposition of COVID-19 (adult/elderly) patients with the status/history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and hospital admission. Conclusion: Prospective studies need to explore the risks of thromboembolism in patients with COVID-19. The current body of evidence does not substantiate antithrombotic treatment for managing thromboembolism in the setting of COVID-19. The physicians must take preventive measures for reducing the incidence rate of thromboembolism in COVID-19 scenarios until the availability of definitive treatment.

TL;DR: In this paper, a qualitative descriptive-exploratory case study was undertaken to explore the response of a learner with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) with impairment in mathematics towards a synchronous online Orton-Gillingham Math intervention in terms of working behavior.
Abstract: Developing basic mathematics skills for all children especially those who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and math disability is not easy. And the sudden shift from face-to-face classes to online instructional delivery due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge to them. Hence, this qualitative descriptive-exploratory case study was undertaken to explore the response of a learner with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) with impairment in mathematics towards a synchronous online Orton-Gillingham Math intervention in terms of working behavior. The participant was chosen purposively based on the diagnosis, arithmetic calculation level, and unfamiliarity with the OG-Math intervention. The participant was taught using the OG-Math approach via an online platform for twice-a-week for 4 weeks. The online classes were recorded then transcribed with consent from the participant’s parent and school. The data were analyzed using trustworthy thematic analysis to ensure validity and reliability. The analysis revealed five (5) emerging themes namely symptoms of inattention, symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, lowered vigilance, emotional understanding and reactivity, and active class participation. Despite the existence of these responses, the participant was still able to participate actively in synchronous online class and showed emotional competence. It can be concluded that learner-participant with ADHD-SLD with impairment in math can thrive in synchronous online class given her short attention span.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the foundation to implement a successful bike share program for those smaller cities and communities with a college or university, given the large available student population that would be interested in using bikes for their own transportation needs.
Abstract: Successful bike share systems are more common in larger than smaller cities. People use bikes to run errands, shop, go out to eat, or tour the city. But what about smaller communities that make up so much of the United States? For the sake of access to transportation and the economic boost to smaller municipalities, it is important to implement a bike share program that provides its citizens with options for public transportation. Incorporating a bike share system should be considered in smaller cities or municipalities that contain colleges or universities, given the large available student population that would be interested in using bikes for their own transportation needs. The approach is to first build the foundation for bike share success among college students while methodologically planning to increase bike availability to sites with probable high participation usage, including locations centrally located to city commerce in the community. The purpose of this article is to present the foundation to implement a successful bike share program for those smaller cities and communities with a college or university. The benefits of a bike share partnership with a college campus, overall physical activity (PA) and health benefits, potential and current demographic groups to use the bike share scheme, economic benefits, environmental factors, dock versus dockless bike share programs, and the finances and logistics of a bike share scheme will be examined. Yearlong strategies and important considerations for a successful bike share program will be explored.

The paper reports the findings of a study on the status of early intervention at specialized facilities in Hoa Binh City. The majority of the facilities obtained certain effects during the intervention process, but the quality is still lacking, growth and long-term influence on the development process. Furthermore, the management of early intervention initiatives is still fraught with issues, posing significant challenges in the implementation process. On that premise, the author draws several lessons acquired in order to achieve high management efficiency.

TL;DR: Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UAT), a study investigated college students' readiness for online learning from seven colleges of education in Ghana's Volta and Oti Regions (UTAUT) as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, the study investigated college students’ readiness for online learning from seven colleges of education in Ghana’s Volta and Oti Regions (UTAUT). The study focused on college students’ eLearning readiness and their perceptions of eLearning in Ghana. The descriptive phenomenological research design was used in this study. Using the convenience sampling technique, seven colleges were chosen from a pool of forty-six colleges of education. The participants were interviewed through WhatsApp and Telegram chats. For this study, the phenomenological data analysis process developed by Colaizzi was used. The findings were organized into the following themes: Adaptability Struggle, The New Digital Divide, A shift in teacher professional development, A shift in teacher professional development, Interactivity, and Time Management. According to the findings, colleges used Google Classroom, WhatsApp, Edmodo, and Telegram for learning and teaching. It was discovered that students face internet connectivity issues, accessibility issues, poor time management, adaptability challenges, technical support issues, high cost of internet bundle challenges with smart devices, and disruption as a result of the need to assist with other domestic activities. Due to the numerous challenges associated with online learning, college students suggest that the teaching and learning should be done in conjunction with face-to-face learning (blended learning) or suspended entirely.

TL;DR: The methodology proposed in Chemie im Kontext was followed and adapted with project-based learning to ensure key concepts were assimilated and related to students’ everyday life.
Abstract: The following paper discusses the implementation of context-based learning to introduce the concepts associated to chemistry of cleaning in high-school students. The methodology proposed in Chemie im Kontext was followed and adapted with project-based learning to ensure key concepts were assimilated and related to students’ everyday life. In such a way, the focus was drifted to a student-oriented approach in which students used the scientific method to inquire about the way in which cleaning products work from a chemical perspective. A collaborative approach was conducted to deliver a scientific poster that portrayed their work.

TL;DR: In this article, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method is used to solve the problem of solving a set of nonlinear regression problems in chemical kinetics and catalysis.
Abstract: In the resolution of problems in chemical kinetics and catalysis the mathematical models relate the independent variable that is usually time, with the dependent variable which is normally the concentration of a reactant. They conform to linear models, whose parameters such as the ordering to origin and the slope are kinetic parameters, applying linear regression to the experimental data can be obtained linear models that are the simplest to be found. On other side, multiple models can be found with two or more independent variables, however, there are models that are not feasible to linearize and therefore you can make use of nonlinear regression. This paper is exemplified by the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) scheme and the use of software such as Stat graphics and Polymath to solve the resulting mathematical models. The results obtained are compared with traditional methods as multiple linearized least squares, in this way the learning teaching process is strengthened, since the student raises the kinetic model and then solves it with computer tools. Through the PBL cycles generated in the resolution of real problems in chemical kinetics and catalysis, significant learnings are achieved on difficult comprehension topics such as initial rate for the determination of the reaction order, half-life times, temperature effect and heterogeneous catalysis.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the levels of and relationship between ICT adoption readiness and ICT policy implementation in secondary schools in Mayuge District, Ghana. And they concluded that secondary schools were in the early stages of domestication of ICT and IT policy implementation.
Abstract: This study explored the levels of and relationship between ICT adoption readiness and ICT policy implementation in Secondary Schools in Mayuge District. The objectives included determining the level of ICT adoption readiness, establishing the level of ICT policy implementation and examining the relationship between ICT adoption readiness and ICT policy implementation. A cross-sectional survey research design employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches was used. A sample of 232 teachers was selected from both private and public secondary schools using simple random sampling technique to participate in the study. Three District Inspectors of Schools (DIS) selected purposively also participated in the study. A questionnaire containing closed ended questions was used to collect quantitative data from the teachers, while an interview guide was used to obtain qualitative responses from the DIS. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics: frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations, while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results revealed a moderate overall level of ICT adoption readiness (M = 42.19, SD = 10.10), a moderate overall level of ICT policy implementation (M = 85.11, SD = 9.88), and a significant moderate positive relationship (r = .50, p < .01) between ICT adoption readiness and ICT policy implementation. From the results it was concluded that secondary schools in Mayuge District were in the early stages of domestication of ICT and ICT policy implementation. It was recommended that concerted effort be directed towards improving schoolsi¯ ICT adoption readiness in order to improve ICT policy implementation.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the challenges that international student-athletes face when arriving in college in the United States and what they can do to overcome these challenges, as well as what colleges can offer to provide support.
Abstract: Research has focused on the process of assimilation that international student-athletes experience when they move to a different country to play their sport as well as continue their education. What mechanisms do these athletes develop and implement to facilitate or ease their experience while going through this process? What opportunities do their new environments provide them to assist with this process? In the present study, ten international athletes were interviewed on their personal experience through this process of assimilation to the United States college setting as student-athletes and conclusions have been drawn regarding what helped them overcome this stage of assimilation and what added more stress to this process. This research will focus on the challenges that international student-athletes face when arriving in college in the United States and what they can do to overcome these challenges, as well as what colleges can do to provide support. Key recommendations to improve integration and accommodations into the American collegiate academic and athletic campus culture are presented.
