Abstract: In the attempt to estimate the average concentration of a particular contaminant during some period of time, a certain proportion of the collected samples is often reported to be below the limit of detection. The statistical terminology for these results is known as censored data, i.e., nonzero values which cannot be measured but are known to be below some threshold. Samples taken over time are assumed to follow a lognormal distribution. Given this assumption, several techniques are presented for estimation of the average concentration from data containing nondetectable values. The techniques proposed include three methods of estimation with a left-censored lognormal distribution: a maximum likelihood statistical method and two methods involving the limit of detection. Each method is evaluated using computer simulation with respect to the bias associated with estimation of the mean and standard deviation. Abstract: Industrial hygienists (IHs) are called upon to investigate exposures to mold in indoor environments, both residential and commercial. Because exposure standards for molds or mycotoxins do not exist, it is important for the industrial hygienist to have a broad knowledge of the potential for exposure and health effects associated with mold in the indoor environment. This review focuses on the toxic effects of molds associated with the production of mycotoxins, and the putative association between health effects due to mycotoxin exposure in the indoor environment. This article contains background information on molds and mycotoxins, and a brief summary and review of animal exposure studies, case reports, and epidemiological studies from the primary literature concerning inhalation of mycotoxins or potentially toxin-producing molds. Abstract: Occupational and environmental health professionals are confronted with issues concerning the health effects of indoor fungal bioaerosol exposure. This article reviews current data on the health effects of indoor mold exposure and provides practical suggestions for occupational and environmental health practitioners regarding how best to manage these exposures based on published human studies. We conducted MEDLINE searches and reviewed all English language studies on indoor mold exposure (visible survey or objective sampling) and human health effects published from 1966 to November 2002. The main findings of the studies are analyzed in conjunction with plausible association of health effects and fungal exposure. Five case control studies, 17 cross-sectional surveys, and 7 case reports met the selection criteria. Current evidence suggests that excessive moisture promotes mold growth and is associated with an increased prevalence of symptoms due to irritation, allergy, and infection. However, specific human toxicity due to inhaled fungal toxins has not been scientifically established. Methods for measuring indoor bioaerosol exposure and health assessment are not well standardized, making interpretation of existing data difficult. Additional studies are needed to document human exposure-disease and dose-response relationships.

Abstract: The complex, dynamic, and continually changing nature of construction work has been recognized as an important contributor to the high rates of injuries and fatalities in the industry. Cranes are a central component of many construction operations and are associated with a large fraction of construction deaths; in fact, estimates suggest that cranes are involved in up to one-third of all construction and maintenance fatalities. Safety and health professionals serving the construction industry need adequate training and knowledge regarding available crane safety devices and procedures so that they may insure these techniques are effectively utilized during construction operations. This paper reviews available information on crane-related injuries, currently available safety devices, and commonly used crane safety procedures. Recommendations for improved crane injury prevention and future crane safety research are given.

Abstract: New electrostatic filter media has been developed for use in 42 CFR 84 negative pressure particulate respirator filters. This respirator filter media was not available for evaluation prior to the change from 30 CFR 11 to 42 CFR 84. Thus, characterization of this filter media is warranted. In this study, the new 42 CFR 84 electrostatic respirator filters were investigated with respect to filter penetration and most penetrating particle size. Three different models of N95 filters, along with one model each of the N99, R95, and P100 class filters were used in this study. First, three of each filter were loaded with a sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol, and three of each filter were loaded with a dioctyl phthalate (DOP) aerosol to obtain normal background penetration results for each filter. Then, two new filters of each type were dipped in isopropanol for 15 seconds and allowed to dry.
