Abstract: 'Lines In the Sand: Botany Bay Stories From 1770' is the third in a series of exhibitions curetted by Ace Bourke on the theme of Australian contact history and its ramifications. Two reviewers, one reviewing Bourke's show in 1998 and the other considering the present 2008 show, both noted the fact that his perspective on this subject is unique. His point of view is intensely personal, informed by his family lineage (which links him to two Governors of NSW) and his involvement with Indigenous artists as a curator and gallery director, and more recently as a researcher working on an MA on contact history, through the University of Wollongong. This combination of factors has resulted in the depiction of more inclusive and plural histories through the exhibition of diverse objects brought together by his inimitable outlook - this is the revelation of Bourke's approach to the representation of Australian history.
