TL;DR: A new topological summary for data that is easy to combine with tools from statistics and machine learning and obeys a strong law of large numbers and a central limit theorem is defined.
Abstract: We define a new topological summary for data that we call the persistence landscape. Since this summary lies in a vector space, it is easy to combine with tools from statistics and machine learning, in contrast to the standard topological summaries. Viewed as a random variable with values in a Banach space, this summary obeys a strong law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. We show how a number of standard statistical tests can be used for statistical inference using this summary. We also prove that this summary is stable and that it can be used to provide lower bounds for the bottleneck and Wasserstein distances.

TL;DR: The gamma functor as discussed by the authors generalizes the Deligne groupoid to a functor gamma from L-infinity algebras concentrated in degree >-n to n-groupoids.
Abstract: The Deligne groupoid is a functor from nilpotent differential graded Lie algebras concentrated in positive degrees to groupoids; in the special case of Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero, it gives the associated simply connected Lie group. We generalize the Deligne groupoid to a functor gamma from L-infinity algebras concentrated in degree >-n to n-groupoids. (We actually construct the nerve of the n-groupoid, which is an enriched Kan complex.) The construction of gamma is quite explicit (it is based on Dupont's proof of the de Rham theorem) and yields higher dimensional analogues of holonomy and of the Campbell-Hausdorff formula.
In the case of abelian L-infinity algebras (i.e. chain complexes), the functor gamma is the Dold-Kan simplicial set.

TL;DR: In this article, an interpretation of the Kervaire invariant of a Riemannian manifold in terms of a holomorphic line bundle on the abelian variety was presented.
Abstract: We describe an interpretation of the Kervaire invariant of a Riemannian manifold of dimension $4k+2$ in terms of a holomorphic line bundle on the abelian variety $H^{2k+1}(M)\otimes R/Z$. Our results are inspired by work of Witten on the fivebrane partition function in $M$-theory (hep-th/9610234, hep-th/9609122). Our construction requires a refinement of the algebraic topology of smooth manifolds better suited to the needs of mathematical physics, and is based on our theory of "differential functions." These differential functions generalize the differential characters of Cheeger-Simons, and the bulk of this paper is devoted to their study.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give two general constructions for the passage from unstable to stable homotopy that apply to the known example of topological spaces, but also to new situations, such as motivic homotoopy theory of schemes.
Abstract: (This is an updated version; following an idea of Voevodsky, we have strengthened our results so all of them apply to one form of motivic homotopy theory).
We give two general constructions for the passage from unstable to stable homotopy that apply to the known example of topological spaces, but also to new situations, such as motivic homotopy theory of schemes. One is based on the standard notion of spectra originated by Boardman. Its input is a well-behaved model category C and an endofunctor G, generalizing the suspension. Its output is a model category on which G is a Quillen equivalence. Under strong hypotheses the weak equivalences in this model structure are the appropriate analogue of stable homotopy isomorphisms.
The second construction is based on symmetric spectra, and is of value only when C has some monoidal structure that G preserves. In this case, ordinary spectra generally will not have monoidal structure, but symmetric spectra will. Our abstract approach makes constructing the stable model category of symmetric spectra straightforward. We study properties of these stabilizations; most importantly, we show that the two different stabilizations are Quillen equivalent under some hypotheses (that also hold in the motivic example).

TL;DR: The main result of as mentioned in this paper amounts to a complete evaluation of the integral cohomological structure of the stable mapping class group and verifies the conjecture of Mumford about the rational cohomology of the group.
Abstract: The main result of this paper amounts to a complete evaluation of the integral cohomological structure of the stable mapping class group. In particular it verifies the conjecture of D.Mumford about the rational cohomology of the stable mapping class group.
